June started with the East London trip which was a huge success with lots of

fellowship. The weather was terrible but we made the most of the time away as usual. The “children” David and Brian were very well behaved and didn't have to be sent to the naughty corner even once. I can't say the

same for Alastair W. They kept us all on our toes and were an absolute joy to have with us. Our c l u b w a s o n c e a g a i n w e l l r ep resen ted w i th 15 o f us excluding Simon the driver who made sure we got from A to B safely as well as the sightseeing.

The show planning is going very well with all the entertainment secured. Our new event – The Miss South Coast Lions – will prove to be a great annual event. The arena events are coming

together thanks to Denis who has taken the project seriously and has produced some splendid ideas. With only 4 weeks to go our aim now is to fill the stands with exhibitors and sell tickets for the evening shows.

As I come close to the end of my year there is only one more meeting and I am off the hook. I thank all the members and the ladies for the i r ongo ing suppor t throughout the year. I wish Andre a successful reign and offer my full support to him in any way he may need it.

Martin John Rundle was unanimously elected as the First Vice District Governor for the 2013/2014 Lionistic Year at our District 410-C Convention held on 3rd May.

He also served as a Port Shepstone Town Councillor from 1994 - 1999 and on the Ugu Regional Council Executive Committee from 1996 - 1998.

Lion Martin’s dedication to serving those in need has been nothing short of outstanding. He has proven to be an excellent Lion and we are extremely proud of his nomination. Incidentally, should Lion Martin be elected as District Governor for the 2014-2015 Lionistic year, he will be the oldest serving Governor in the history of District 410-C.

For the past 27 years, the Port Shepstone Lions Club have been organising and running their annual Port Shepstone Lions Show. Over the years, this amazing project has grown to become the Kwazulu-Natal South Coast's premier platform for local and national trade.

This year’s Show promises to be a bumper event and the Show Committee, under the leadership of Convener, Lion President Jean Masson have been hard at work for the past 10 months organising and planning. Along with the hundreds of businesses and exhibitions there will be an action packed entertainment line-up filled with some of South Africa's top performers.

This project is the largest combined fund raiser and service undertaking of the Lions Club of Port Shepstone and is one of the largest of it’s kind in the country. The funds raised at this event are ploughed directly back into the local community. The show attracts a massive audience from as far afield as Kokstad, Pietermaritzburg and Durban and provides a springboard for companies wishing to expand local and national markets. The Lions Show is the South Coast's most successful shop window to the rest of South Africa. The Show also provides much needed fundraising opportunities for other community organisations and church groups.

The Show is unique in that it involves the full diversity of nationalities and cultures that form part of everyday life in this beautiful region.

The dates 27 – 30 June have been chosen as they coincide with the winter school holidays and the Sardine Festival. This ensures that we attract thousands of locals and holiday-makers alike.

We invite everyone to visit this year’s Show and support this really excellent initiative. This project has f irmly established the Port Shepstone Lions Club as “The Pride of the Hibiscus Coast”

The Reitz Lions Club from the Free State have finally entered the 21st century! 2nd Vice District Governor Elect, Lion Willie Van Der Schyf demonstrated their latest “innovation” at the District 410-C Convention

held in East London. This snazzy new invention boasts a picture of an apple on the cover (Reitz’s version of

the Apple Computer!) and w h e n o p e n e d u p , t h e photograph of Willie and his compatriots attending the recent Reg iona l L ions L e a d e r s h i p I n s t i t u t e represents the screen. The 2014 Multiple District 410 Convention will be memorable for three reasons :

Firstly, it is the 50th Multiple District Convention of MD 410; secondly, the convention will be held in Windhoek, Namibia; and thirdly, because you will have made the brilliant decision to be there.

The convention committee is hard at work preparing and invite you to a convention with sound deliberations, even better camaraderie, and fabulous Namibian "Gemutlichkeit". Please take note of the following :

The convention is in a neighbouring country (to South Africa) so you will need a valid passport for your travels. The convention commences with the Council Dinner on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 and ends in the early hours of Sunday, April 27, 2014 after a hefty party.Because the convention follows directly after the Easter weekend, (Friday 18 April to Monday 21 April, 2014) you may want to combine the trip to Namibia with a short holiday leading up to the Easter weekend?Namibia in April/May is the best time to visit – the heat has dissipated, the valleys are still green, and the beer is always cold.

The official Convention web page (http://www.md410convention.com) has been designed to facilitate your registration with the greatest of ease – surf it, browse as much as you like, and make use of the links to guide you with your decisions. But PLEASE, do not be the last Lion to register – you have been warned.

We look forward to seeing you all at Convention.

In Reitz we onlyspeak Englishin self defence!

One man's quest for healing has inspired him to take to the road to raise awareness for disabled animals and people, and he recently passed through Port

Shepstone.

On 17 January, 69-year-old Marne van den Heever started a mammoth walk of 1,400km from Cape Town to Pretoria. Travelling with Marne is his trusty (three-legged) disabled dog, Tripod. “I’m doing this so that people will become aware of disabled people and animals,” said Marne. He himself suffers from a disability called syndactyly of the hands.

After a serious car accident Marne began to suffer from panic attacks and depression. Medication didn’t seem to help. It was then that Marne started walking a pug and this helped him to deal with his depression. When the little pug would get tired, Marne would put him in a wheelchair.

When his pug died, Marne adopted his dog Tripod, who was left for dead after being struck by a taxi. It was then that Marne decided to put Tripod in the wheelchair and take to the road to raise awareness for disabled animals and people. He also set up the Independent Physically Disabled Opportunities Trust. Instead of taking the N1 route, Marne opted to walk the N2 route. “I wanted to take the longer route because towns are closer together along the N2. I also wanted to spend time with Tripod,” said Marne.

“The reaction from people along the road has shown me that this walk has credibility,” said Marne. Along the route people have been fascinated by Marne and Tripod and have stopped him along the way to also donate to his Trust. “This journey has reached all races and the reaction from people is amazing,” said Marne.

There are times when roads along the journey are tough and dangerous. In the Transkei Marne accepted a lift from a driver because the roads were narrow and didn’t allow for an easy walk. He says he doesn’t accept lifts although at times it’s tempting.

On his journey, Marne looks to two tattoos on his arms, ‘free at last’ and ‘pursue your passion’ – which remind him that what he’s doing is worth it. “This would not be possible without people taking us in. People have been superb,” said Marne. He encourages people not to buy dogs, rather adopt them.

Marne & Tripod were hosted by Lion Danie and Lion Lady Marlene Van Tonder at their home in Umtentweni during the weekend of 18-19 May. A special luncheon was arranged at Bela’s Restaurant on the banks of the Umzimkulu River in Port Shepstone which was attended by members of the Port Shepstone Lions Club. At the event, Lion President Jean Masson handed over a R1000-00 donation to Marne for his very worthy cause.

When Marne reaches Pretoria, he hopes that big sponsors will make this wheelchair walk an official event. For Marne the star of the show is his dog. “Tripod is my inspiration, without him I would never be able to do this,” said Marne.

Our Annual Lions District 410-C Training and Information Weekend took place at the Highway Commando in Pinetown during the weekend of 25-26 April. Kudo’s to District Chairman Lyn Botha, Lion President Sandy Beykirch and the Lions of Cowies Hill for their fine efforts in organising and running this very

successful event.

A total number of 8 Sheppie Lions attended the Training Weekend. These included 1st VDG Elect Martin Rundle who presented a workshop on Project Planning and PDG Denis Meyer who presented the Membership, Retention and New Club development workshops and assisted with the running of the weekend program.

We were most fortunate to have Past Council Chairman and the Southern Africa Area Coordinator of the Global Leadership Team, Cliff Hocking in attendance. Lion Cliff travelled all the way from the Midrand Lions Club in District 410-B and, together with Lions Denis and Martin was kindly hosted by Alan and Mimi Wilms at their home in Westville. His contribution to the weekend program was outstanding. He presented many of the workshops which included Developing Md410 Excellence, Fundamentals of Leadership, Functions of a Club’s Board of Directors, Club Presidents & Zone Chairmen workshops and Protocol.

The other workshop presenters included District Chairman Karin Preston from eThekwini South Lions (Secretaries Workshop), District Cabinet Treasurer Margaret Haus from eThekwini South Lions (Treasurers Workshop), District Governor Elect Heather Hardman from Cowies Hill (who assisted with the Club Presidents and Zone Chairmans workshop), 2nd Vice District Governor Elect Willie Van Der Schyf from Reitz Lions (Effective Meetings Workshop) and Lion Bert Van Wyk from Hibberdene Lions (Conflict Management Workshop). District Governor Adrian Barnes was the Presiding Officer at the event.

All workshop presenters dedicated a huge amount of time and effort in preparing and presenting their respective workshops and they have to be commended for this. They too are volunteers who gave up much of their time to assist others within our Association. It was rather sad that only 60 delegates attended and only half the clubs in our District were represented. Those who attended were extremely satisfied with what they learned and they all thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship. The fact that the Blue Bulls beat the sharks did not even put a dampener on their spirits.

The facilities and meals at the Highway Commando in Pinetown were outstanding. The pub prices were dirt cheap and we all enjoyed a great deal of fellowship in and around the pub area after hours. Those who stayed at the venue were accommodated in army tents which brought back memories for many a past national serviceman! Our compliments to them for going out of their way to accommodate our needs.

All in all, a great weekend which was, once again well subsidised by our District Training budget. Hopefully next year’s training will be better supported.

Sheppie Lions should have a good start to the new Lionistic year as the Incoming President, 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents, club secretary and membership Chairman all attended and are ready for the challenges that lie ahead.

It's now 18:30 and it has been raining for 48 hours non-stop! I have already measured 350mm of rain since yesterday. All accesses to Shelly Beach are now flooded and we are literally stranded. Even the little bridge to Shelly Centre is flooded. The Harding

road and Oslo Beach road into P/S have been closed due to the water flowing over the bridges. The Engen Garage at Oslo Beach is under water. Two cars were washed off the bridge there earlier today. The Lions show grounds are completely underwater. Our fun fair set up on Monday this week and all their rides etc. are totally submerged! The Port Shepstone Country Club is under water and only the club house roof is visible. 5 people have died already and countless others have lost their homes and need shelter. Most roads are closed and there is little or no traffic on the usually busy Marine Drive which runs past my house. As for my garden, well the wind has shredded most of the leaves off the bushes and trees and left them bare! The pool looks like a duck pond with all the debris. Our neighbour has lost part of her roof which was blown away last night. Port Shepstone Lions have already arranged for emergency food parcels for the

homeless and are distributing these with the help fo our local Superspar. L.C.I.F. have already approved emergency relief funding of R100 000.00 which will assist greatly with our relief efforts. The Lions Show will probably have to be moved to another venue, let’s hope and pray that we are able to pull this one off!

eet 98 year old Bulgarian Dobri Dobrev, a man who lost his hearing in

Mthe second world war. Every day he walks 10 kilometers from his village in his homemade clothes and leather shoes to the city of Sofia,

where he spends the day begging for money.

Though a well known fixture around several of the city’s churches, known for his prostrations of thanks to all donors, it was only recently discovered that he has donated every penny he has collected — over 40,000 euros — towards the restoration of decaying Bulgarian monasteries and the utility bills of orphanages, living instead off his monthly state pension of 80 euros.
