Hey Dad.. . .It’s PAYBACKTIME!!! M i n d t h e
nose hairs!!
ANSA Shavathon is one of South Africa’s best-loved events in support of a very worthy cause, namely
Cshowing solidarity with those affected by cancer. Losing one’s hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy – so shaving your head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors.
Colouring your hair or paying a Bail Out Fee have become options for those who prefer not to shave, or who can’t shave on the day.
A group of Sheppie Lions once again supported this year’s CANSA Shavathon which was held in the centre court at Shelly Centre in Shelly Beach. These brave, dapper gents sacrificed all facial hair much to the amusement of passers by!!
n 27th February, PDG Denis Meyer was invited by the South Coast Business Network
Oto be their guest speaker at their monthly breakfast meeting held at Kc’s Restautant in Shelly Beach.
The talk was a great success with plenty of participation and interest from all present, it was well worth it. They all have a better understanding of what Lions Clubs are all about and particularly what we do for the needy in our communities. They were given a run down of every club in our Zone, each club's unique dynamics, activities, services to their communities and successes. It was explained to them that all present were part of the 25% of the world's population who have a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs and a meal to eat every day and that if we do not start to give back and help those in need, our house of cards will start to topple. They were encouraged to support our projects and initiatives through sponsorships or simply lending a helping hand. The forthcoming Lions Expo was well covered and details of this and other projects in our area will be circulated to all of them via Echardt Scholtz who runs the Network. This was a great opportunity and all Lions are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities like this to promote our organisation and what we do. We cannot go it alone and we desperately need the support of business to make it all possible. Grateful appreciation to the South Coast Business Network for their very kind invitation.
hese lovely teddy bears were Tknitted by volunteers. The wool
and stuffing was donated by the
Sheppie Lions. They have been donated
to South Coast Hospice for their
“Memory Box” project. They are used as
comfort toys for orphans and vulnerable
children. A truly wonderful initiative for a
very worthy cause.
Hi Denis
Thank you very much for your talk this morning. I had a lot of positive feedback from our members attending and am sure that we as individuals and probably as a group will throw in what we can where we can in future. I'll circulate the detail you passed on as well. I would like to invite you again in future if you don't mind….once our numbers have come back to 'normal'. Possibly after your changed show event?
Regards

he Expo Grounds layout has just been released. This year’s Expo layout is undoubtably one of the best - all Tour exhibitors will receive equal exposure as visitors with have to walk past every stall in order to reach the
arena and entertainment tent. Exhibitor stand bookings are now open. For more information or to book
your stand, visit our Expo web site (http://expo.sheppielions.co.za) or contact Lion Lady Jane Massey tel : 039-

If longevity is used as a measure of popularity
then the Gee Jays must rate as one of Durban’s
favourite cabaret groups. Comprising of Gary
McKenzie, John Didlick and Grant Bell, the Gee
Jays have been performing their brand of down to
earth, no nonsense, comedy/music shows for
over 25 years and they still remain as popular as
ever.
They will perform live at the Lions “Laugh Out
Loud” Comedy evening on Thursday 22nd May in
the main entertainment marquee at the 2014
Lions Outdoor & Leisure Expo.
The Gee Jays produce their usual variety of fun,
with nonstop cheesy puns and risqué jokes to go
along with a wide variety of good music. They perform songs such as Heartache Tonight - the Eagles, Another
Saturday Night - Cat Stevens, She’s A Lady- Tom Jones, Ob-la-di Ob-la-da – Beatles, My Dingaling- Chuck Berry,
Smooth – Santana, Are You Lonesome Tonight – Elvis, amongst many others. They also offer brief skits on various
subjects. they are bawdy and naughty and will have the audience in stitches.
With excerpts from their first smash hit shows Not The Full Monty, The Three Tonners, and Book Club to their later
successes, Bad Moon Rising, Who’s Your Daddy and Boep Idles.
Expect all the old favorites from The Beatles to Roy Orbison, Michael Jackson to Elvis and Tom Jones to Robbie
Wessels, they will also re-visit how men can multi-task. There will be some brain numbing red-neck antics and even
a message from “The Arch” thrown in for good measure.
The show, however, will not be for the faint hearted and does carry a health warning. Some slight pain in the cheek
muscles and tummy may be experienced. Stay away if you have misplaced your sense of humor.
The show takes place on Thursday 22nd May. Tickets are R200 per person and includes a 3 course meal.
Tickets can be purchased from any Port Shepstone Lion member.

Despite the fact that our District will be holding our 2014 Convention locally, a number of Sheppie Lions will still be attending the Multiple District “Mad” Convention in Windhoek, Namibia.
A special fundraising drive for this trip in the form of a “Bosveld Dinner” was held at the Sheppie Lions’ Den on Saturday 15th February. Lions and members of the public attended en masse and the event was a big success with plenty of funds being raised. Lions and Lion Ladies pitched in with Lion Lady Jenny Vogt superbly decorating the venue, Lion Lady President Estelle O’Neill and her team of helpers providing the side dishes and Lions Al Warman, Nico De Jong and Kevin Ross attending to the braaing and delicious potjie. Lion Denis Meyer, once again provided music for the event. The Sharks Super 14 rugby victory over the Blue Bulls was undoubtably the cherry on top! All in all, A very enjoyable evening.
Enjoying the Rugby

he Sheppie Lions’ February Club meeting was certainly a night to remember - when the “Mother of all raids”
Toccurred!
The Club members settled down to another regular Club meeting totally oblivious of the onslaught that was about to occur. The evening started out with a surprise visit from Lion “Oom” Pietie Van Niekerk who is on a stopover on the South Coast for 3 weeks before he and Aunty Joey depart for Canada for a year to visit with their son and daughter-in-law. It was really great to have him (and his humour) with us again!
We welcomed new member George Leggett and returnee Alec Sammon into the club and were also happy to have the very busy Lion (Dr) Fred Babumba present at the meeting. As the meeting progressed, a jovial group of about 10 Shelly Beach Lions, led by Club President Clinton Barclay and PCC Paul Brauteseth entered the board room and joined us with very sheepish grins on all their faces (the promise of things to come!). They brought with them Lion Tom Mc Henry from Tonbridge Lions in the UK who is currently on holiday here on the South Coast. We enjoyed a really great meeting with plenty of participation from all present. As we were about to reach the Tailtwisting section of the meeting, a very rowdy group of Port Shepstone Round Tablers entered the Board Room and totally disrupted the proceedings. They filed through the tables, insisting on personally greeting each and every member. Whilst distracting us with their friendliness, they were helping themselves to various items of regalia. This came to the fore when Club President Andre tried to hit the gong at the end of the meeting only to discover that it had been nicked by one of the passing Tablers. As Lion Andre picked up his gavel, the gong sounded off somewhere at the other end of the room sending most of us into total confusion! After the meeting we were all treated to Al’s gourmet burgers.
It was certainly a night to remember - with plenty of fellowship, fun and laughter. It is not often that a club is raided by two other clubs and an international guest but, as always, the Sheppie guys took it all in their stride - the more the merrier! Fortunately most of the items “borrowed” by the raiding parties were actually items that the Sheppie guys had already “borrowed” from other clubs! One thing is for sure...revenge is sweet and the Sheppie clan will be visiting each of these clubs en masse in the near future. They have already been for warned!!!

Port Shepstone Lions Club2013-2014 Board Of Directors
Zone 6 Chairman K e v i n R o s s welcomed George
Leggett as the newest m e m b e r o f t h e P o r t Shepstone Lions Club during their February Club Meeting.
Lion George originally joined Lions in 1971 and served at the Matopos and Gwelo Clubs in the then Rhodesia.
He emigrated to South Africa in 1976 and served at Bergvliet Lions Club in 410-A, transferred to Randburg and then Illovo in 410-B, transferred back
to 410-A where he served at Durbanville and Hermanus Club Branch before finally retiring to the KZN South Coast.
Lion George left Lions for a period of 5 years and became a Rotarian, however, upon arrival in Port Shepstone he soon discovered that returning to Lions and joining the Sheppie Lions Club was, without a doubt, his best option.
We are sure that Lion George will be very happy in our club - it has taken him 43 years to f inal ly become a member of the Best Lions Club in Southern Afr ica!!
Lion Tom Mc Henry, a member of one of the oldest Lions Club in the UK,
the Tonbridge Lions Club, visited the Sheppie Lions February Club Meeting and exchanged friendship banners with Club President Andre Beneke.
L ion Tom, who is cur rent ly holidaying on the KZN South Coast, addressed the Club and was most impressed with the fact that it felt as if he was attending a meeting of his very own club.
Tonbridge Lions was the first Lions club to be formed in the UK in 1949 and is one of the largest clubs in the country. Their current membership stands at 56 and meets twice per month, a business and dinner
meeting, in addition to both the wide a varied programme of service, fund raising and social activities. These range from running one of the largest horse shows in the county, a nationally recognized triathlon and the town carnival to Christmas barrel organ collections, a fun day for the disabled, quiz nights and numerous other events.
