The Shapinsay Sound When we return to school on the 18th August (17th for staff) we will be working on new targets for the 2015/16 session. Our first target will be looking at Modern Languages in the school. We are already learning French, and we will be working on improving this further and researching a second language to introduce. Our second target will be continuing to work on Assessment for Learning with all schools in Orkney. This involves using assessment as part of learning so that children can be more supported or challenged and become more involved in their learning. Our third target will be working on using the outdoor environment to enhance learning. Part of this will be developing the area at the front of the school and we would really like people from the community to be involved with this so please look out for more details in future Shapinsay Sounds. Early in the new term the children will be given the opportunity to stand for Pupil Council and will be developing their own targets to work on . Children -enjoy the rest of the summer (fingers crossed the weather improves) and we will see you all back at school on the 18th! The display of cut flowers and vegetables were impressive considering the weather and the judges scrutinised the displays and awarded the prizes.

The date of the Prize giving and AGM will be announced in due course and we hope to see all the winners coming along to collect their prizes.

Last month we held our annual Holiday Club. The first three days were held in Kirkwall East, the latter two in the Shapinsay Community Centre. We were using Scripture Union materials entitled ‘Polar Explorers’. Lots of fun had been had by all. A great big thank you to all those who came along, helped, supported and contributed towards it in many ways. It wouldn’t have happened without you! This month is going to be quite varied and busy in the kirk. We have our quarterly communion service on the 9th August – everybody’s welcome, whether you’re a regular or not, church member or not. We’d love to have you there with us celebrating the Lord’s Supper. Then on the 23rd August we’re going across to visit the Peedie Kirk – it’s our annual visit to them and we usually get a good service and lunch with our friends there so please do come along if you can. For those who can’t make it, there’s still going to be a service on Shapinsay led by the Worship Group. On the 30th August we welcome Glenys Hughes, the founder of the charity called Malawi Music Fund. She works with Malawian orphans, helping their development through music, arts and education. If you’d like to know more, please do come along and see what it’s all about. Hope to see you all soon! Rev Julia Meason, 874789 or 711275, [email protected]

Home-Start is the UK’s leading family support charity and Home-Start Orkney has been on the go for over 14 years. The scheme was recently awarded a grant from the Big Lottery Fund to develop the service to the isles. To provide this we will train volunteers who then offer support in the family home to parents of young children who are experiencing diffi-culties. Perhaps a parent is struggling with isolation, depression or would just benefit from a couple of hours of practical or emotional help once a week to assist with parenting skills

or improve their general wee-being. We are keen to recruit volunteers who will have parenting experience and they will be provided with training, out-of-pocket expenses and on-going support from the co-ordinators.

Responses to Curtailment – LECF Award – by Nic. Thake

You may have seen and heard reports in the local media about Shapinsay Development Trust being awarded funding from the Local Energy Challenge Fund to develop a project in response to curtailment. Considering we only started on this road a few months ago it is pleasing to acknowledge the imaginative assistance which we have received from Community Energy Scotland (CES) and from ITM , a manufacturer of electrolysers (shorthand name ‘elys’), which has helped us frame this successful application to develop a project with them working alongside us as collaborators. Using feedback from the two ‘Responses’ meetings, and other input, we engaged with these two partners to identify a viable scheme which would not only address curtailment but also be relevant to our community and which would further their aims. ITM are already working with EMEC and the Eday Development Trust on the ‘Surf and Turf’ project which will provide an ely to create hydrogen which will be used to power a fuel cell on Kirkwall Pier. The company is also supporting a bid for European funds designed to help create a ‘hydrogen territory’ (that’s EU speak) within Orkney. SDT are also engaged in this bid (known as BIGHIT) alongside Orkney Islands Council, EMEC and some other interesting partners from around Europe. The thinking behind following both projects is that it doubles the chances of finding a solution to the issues we have decided to address. If we find ourselves in the incredible position of succeeding in both applications that could open up even more collaborative opportunities for the com-munity. I recently briefed a joint meeting of the SDT and SRL boards on the outlines of both projects and I’ll be happy to do the same for any interested groups on the island. Sometime over the next month, or so, we’ll arrange another public meeting to brief the community as a whole. A representative from ITM will attend that meeting. He will be well placed to answer questions about working with hydrogen. Please feel free to put your questions to me in the interim and I’ll do my best to find answers for you. NT 05/08/2015.

Boathouse Contract awarded to Steven Bews

Following a competitive tender process undertaken by Orkney Surveying Services the main contract to convert the Boathouse has been awarded to Steven G. Bews, Builders, of Chapelbrae, Shapinsay. The pre-contact meeting between the contractor, surveyor and Trust has already taken place and a start date of 10 August has been agreed. The initial work will include site fencing which will remain in place and safely secure the site throughout the development period. Work will continue at a steady pace through the rest of this year focussing first on the exterior and then moving inside as the seasons move on. Funded by Big Lottery and Highland and Island Enterprise the Boathouse will become a facility available for everyone to use and is intended to offer opportunities which are additional to those already available on the island - rather than to duplicate anything that’s already here. It will offer a flexible space for small meetings, social events, training and also educational opportunities via video and conferencing links. There will be a range of computer equipment available for use and free wi-fi for residents and visitors alike. The Boathouse will also be the Development Trust’s new home. The exterior charge point will offer recharging facilities for electric vehicles owned by residents and visitors alike. The will be regular monthly updates on the work published here in Shapinsay Sound. Information for these

reports will be drawn from scheduled monthly progress meetings. For Health & Safety reasons the site will not

be open to visitors while work is underway.
