IRI SH NEWSLETTER THE SHAMROCK St. Patrick’s Alumni Association Newsletter VOL. XXXVII No. 2 Fall/Winter, 2018 THE POWER OF LITTLE PRAYERS Just before the start of the 2018/2019 school year, long- time McDaid instructor (and 1974 St. Pat’s grad) Therese McCarthy- Garth was diagnosed with breast cancer. Therese currently teaches 5 th grade at McDaid, and has been a dedicated teacher for over 30 years. Our Catholic school family immediately rallied around Therese, offering prayers, meals, and many hugs. A part of that rally included the creation of special McDaid “Spirit Wear” shirts to honor and support Therese. Every child and teacher at McDaid received one of Therese’s spirit shirts at no charge… And donations were accepted to give to Therese for medical expenses. The response was incredible. Over 330 shirts arrived in the initial order, and students wore them on Homecoming Friday. McDaid Principal Pam Wood will place another order for the spirit shirts after the first of the year. If any alumni are interested in purchasing a shirt, please contact the Endowment office to place your order. Cost for the shirts is a suggested minimum donation of $15. All proceeds will be given to Therese. Mail donations to: NPCSET PO Box 57 North Platte, NE 69103 Mrs. McCarthy-Garth was also honored this fall with a “Teacher of the Month” award from North Platte’s Eagle Radio. Station general manager Lewys Carlini (’83) had the honor of presenting Therese with a variety of gifts, $200 in supplies for her classroom, and a catered lunch for her class. VOL. XXXVII No. 2 Fall/Winter, 2018

THE POWER OF LITTLE PRAYERS

Just before the start of the 2018/2019 school year, long-

time McDaid instructor (and 1974 St. Pat’s grad) Therese McCarthy-Garth was diagnosed with breast cancer. Therese currently teaches 5th grade at McDaid, and has been a dedicated teacher for over 30 years. Our Catholic school family immediately rallied around Therese, offering prayers, meals, and many hugs. A part of that rally included

the creation of special McDaid “Spirit Wear” shirts to honor and support Therese.

Mail donations to: NPCSET PO Box 57 North Platte, NE 69103

Mrs.

WELCOME NEW FACULTY

The new school year brought some new faces and some familiar faces to the North Platte Catholic Schools teaching staff. We are continually blessed by the commitment and good work of ALL of our faculty, and we are excited to welcome these teachers into their new positions.

IRISH FOOTBALL 2018

Despite an 0-3 start to the 2018 season, Coach Kevin Dodson (’89) and the Irish put together six wins in a row and earned a District Championship behind the steady leadership of 5 seniors. The Irish qualified for the State Playoffs once again (18 out of the last 19 years), and battled hard against the number one seed. But, the Irish season came to an end with a 28-0 loss to the eventual State-Champion Centennial Broncos. The hard work and determination of this young team was inspiring to watch and provides a promising outlook for the future! Go Irish!

IRISH VOLLEYBALL 2018

What a season to remember! After a rough 3-6 start in September, the Lady Irish went on a 17-game winning streak. They won the Southern Valley Tournament, an SPVA conference Championship, a District Championship, and earned a trip to the 2018 Nebraska State Volleyball Tournament. The Lady Irish finished the season at the State Tournament with a 24-9 record losing to eventual class D1 State Champions, Archbishop Bergan. Irish Coach Shelly Byrn also recorded her 300th career win this season! The team was led by seniors Kaleigh Kummer, Calli Groseth, Abbi Allberry, and Hayley Homan. New school records were set by Calli Groseth (1,676 career set assists) and Kaleigh Kummer (1,249 career digs). Both of those records were previously held by Megan Mroczek (’08). Four Lady Irish received All SPVA honors.

IRISH CROSS COUNTRY 2018

The St Pat’s cross country teams posted solid results throughout the 2018 season. The girls won the St Pat’s Invite, McCook Invite, UNK Invite, Conference Champion-ship, District Championship and were Runners-Up at State.

All but four of the cross-country athletes posted personal bests for the year and the most improved runner

improved more than five minutes for her 5k time. Logan O’Malley qualified for State with a 12th place finish at Districts with a new PR. On the girls side there were 5 individual qualifiers: Kelsey Folchert was the District Champion; Kate Stienike placed 3rd; Hayley Miles 4th; Gracie Rippen 5th; and Genna Blakely 9th. To cap the season, Coach Tim O’Neill named Logan O’Malley male athlete of the year and Kelsey Folchert as female athlete of the year.

BE A TEAMMATE!

On behalf of the North Platte Chapter of the TeamMates Mentoring Program, I would like to appeal to each of you to consider becoming a TeamMates Mentor. Our local TM program is healthy and growing, both in our NP Public Schools and our Catholic Schools. Although we desperately need mentors for both, my appeal to you is particularly aimed at trying to grow a culture of mentoring for our kids in the Catholic Schools; at McDaid as well as St. Patrick’s Jr./Sr. High School. Kids are now being matched as young as 3rd grade, and our hope is to have a mentor assigned to every child who wants one. From kids who have everything going for them to those who struggle more than most, what child would not benefit from a mentor? Whether you currently have kids enrolled in our Catholic Schools or if your kids have graduated and are “empty nesters” who still want to remain connected to our Catholic Schools in a meaningful way, we hope you will consider signing up for this very important effort for our youth. It is truly an easy commitment… As easy as having lunch once a week with your mentee and taking a little time to visit and do something fun with them. Consistency in meeting is important and mentors are asked to meet at least 3 or 4 times per month. Please give this some serious consideration and pray about it. If you are interested in applying or if you have questions, please call local TM Coordinator (Molly Morales) at 308-520-1241 or St. Patrick’s School Counselor (Moriah Eickhoff) at 308-530-1466. You can also call me or log on to: www.teammates.org for information and to apply.

Sincerely, Dr. Kim Baxter Mentor, Former TM state and local board member

June, 2018 Thank you for including our wife, mother, daughter, and sister Julie (Kellogg) Buehler (’72) in the North Platte Catholic Schools Book of Memories. We appreciate all of the prayers, thoughts, and kindness shown to our family during her illness. She was a great model of service and faith for all of us, and we greatly miss her. Mom and Dad have always been so proud that all of their eight children graduated from the North Platte Catholic Schools!

My dear friend and ’84 classmate needs our help. Megan (Kildare) Misgadis was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Colon Cancer last January and is currently undergoing treatments. If you would like to donate to her family to help with the costs associated with her cancer treatments, please use the link: www.gofundme.com/meganmisegadis. If you’d like to donate by check, please direct your checks to the NPCS Endowment, PO Box 57, North Platte, NE 69103, with

October, 2018 Our classmate Helen Toillion Smith, class of 1953 SPHS, reaped her eternal reward on September 30, 2018. She was a fun-loving Irish lass, a faith-filled and loyal wife, a great mom, and a hard worker. We all loved her.

God bless all of you. St. Patrick’s High School Classmates of 1953

November, 2018 We, the family of Craig L. Baxter (’06), would like to express our most heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Mark R. Young (’83) for his beautiful remembrance of Craig and generous donation in Craig’s honor to the North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment. It is very comforting to know that others remember Craig for the special person he was, and that Dr. Young has chosen to express his love for Craig in such a profound and lasting way. We hope that the “Craig Baxter Memorial Fund” initiated by Dr. Young’s generosity will continue to grow in years to come, providing a lasting benefit to our North Platte Catholic Schools as a legacy to Dr. Mark Young and our beloved son Craig.

Sincerely, Dr. Kim and Nancy Baxter (Craig’s parents) Mikaela (’08) and Dave Meagher (Craig’s sister & brother-in-law)
