Audrey McKeague and the Rotary singers led the group in a version of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." Phil Monohan presented the word of the day, "Teamwork." Kelly Cheng introduced our three visiting Rotarians from such far

flung places as Eureka, Reno and Fremont. Ana Ambarian sold raffle tickets for a wonderful book and DVD set, "Note by Note," and the history of the Steinway piano, donated by Audrey McKeague. In addition to those mentioned above, Greg Gutting, Jim Kennedy, Sandra Kress and Les Anderson were all busy helping to run the meeting.

House Picnic this past Saturday with almost 90 people there. A wonderful time was had by all, especially by the over 35 children in attendance! Announcements: Habitat for Humanity dedication: Jim Murray invited Rotarians to come to the Habitat for Humanity dedication ceremony on May 15th, for the Whitney Young

Circle Homes. The dedication ceremony will be held at 10:30 AM at the Hilltop Park in Bayview neighborhood 1 Progress Street, San Francisco. National Trails Day at Rotary Meadow: John Hoch invited everyone to the Rotary Meadow atop Mt. Sutro on June 5th, which is National Trails Day. The trail markers and new trail maps sponsored in part by our club will be in place on that day. The trail maps acknowledge the Rotary Club of San Francisco with the Rotary

Wheel logo on each brochure. Food and refreshments will be served afterward, as usual. All are welcome: non-workers, children, dogs, hikers, and workers who will weed the Rotary Meadow. The Rotary Twilight Golf Season will start on Wednesday, May 26th. The golf outings will be every other Wednesday at 4:30 pm. The group gathers at Harding Park and plays the nine hole Fleming Course. Usually drinks and sometimes

dinner follows. Everyone is welcome regardless of golf ability. Contact Kevin Waldeck for more details. Other announcements included: the AIDS Walk will be on July 18th in San Francisco; the May Division Party will be combined with the June division and will be at Mijita in Willie Mays Plaza at the ballpark on a date to be announced soon;

there is still space at the winemaker dinner at Ana Mandara; and the date for the Rotary Assembly at the Arc has been changed to May 19th. Recognitions and Fines: Allan Herzog gave $100 in honor of the hard work and dedication of Audrey McKeague at Harbor House. Our guest from Eureka offered a fine in honor of our Club chartering the Eureka club in 1923.

President-Elect Tim Hornbecker gave us an update on the Gala Event fundraising totals of $63,990 gross and $38,929 net, just topping the previous year's net. Tim, with the help of our speaker, also drew the winners of the raffle, Deborah Lauricella and Sam Yates. President Scott reminded people that time is running out on the opportunity for the Club to match donations for new Paul Harris Fellows, up to $500. The goal is

to have a club that is 100% Paul Harris Fellows. Rotarian of the Month Nine La Dow received her pin and recognition. Thank you for all that you do for Rotary, Nine. We had three new members introduced at the meeting today. Nine La Dow

introduced Julie Jay, Jim Jeffery introduced Ali Shabalangi, and Cecile Chiquette introduced Robert Kosbie, who was previously a member of the Fresno East club. Welcome, new members! Today's Program: Jeff Adachi, Public Defender, City & County of San

Francisco

As the Public Defender for San Francisco, Jeff and his office are responsible for providing legal defense to those who do not otherwise have access. Jeff has a team of 93 lawyers representing 24,000 defendants each year. Jeff said that

his Japanese-American background gives him a strong opinion that there should be equal justice for everyone and that all people need to have the opportunity to be treated equally and fairly. Jeff thinks that San Francisco is the greatest city in the world, but he is very concerned with the City's ongoing budget deficits. If we keep going down this

path, according to Jeff, the City will go broke. He sees it as a "Tale of Two Cities," the public sector and the private sector employees. While the public sector employees have a guaranteed job and pension benefits, the private sector employees have to take on the added burden, through taxes and fees, of the current difficult economic times. The City's annual budget is $6.6 billion, which may sound like a lot of money, until you start to look at where it goes. 80% of the budget is pre-determined where it will be spent. Over $1 billion each year

goes to cover retirement and health care benefits for current and retired City employees. As a means to help solve the budget problems, Jeff recommends pension and retirement rules be reformed, with city employees bearing a larger portion of the costs, such as 50%, rather than the current 0-10%. This can result in a $170 million annual savings, enough to pay for summer school next year. He needs

GETTING READY FOR 2010-2011 GRANT YEAR by SF Rotary Webmaster

If you are working on a matching grant or an idea for a matching grant from out

club, for Fiscal Year 2010-11, your application must be in the hands of Keith Axtell by May 24,2010. To apply for District Designated Funds, (DDF) your Matching Grant request has to have been reviewed by the grant coordinator,, Jean Schore, and you have ad to complete the grant training given in March, 2010. The DDF application form is posted at www.sfrotary.com at Downloads on the home page. The matching grant application form is posted on the

MOUNT SUTRO NATIONAL TRAIL DAYS, JUNE 5 by SF Rotary Webmaster

Join us and the Sutro Stewards, now a San Francisco Parks Trust partner, for National Trails Day on Mount Sutro!

There will be prizes for the first 70 participants, commemorating four years of volunteerism with the Sutro Stewards, building and maintaining trails and habitat.

The day will also celebrate the installation of trail markers, sponsored by the Rotary Club! Everyone will receive a free trail map, containing info on the mountain's distinct history and wildflowers. End the morning celebrating with hot pizza and cool beverages.

Volunteer day activities run from 9 AM to 12:30 PM.

Meeting Location: Meet at the Woods Building parking lot, located at 100 Medical Center Way. DUE TO CONSTRUCTION: Remember to travel via Clarendon to Johnstone, then down Medical Center Way if arriving by car. Parking is available for volunteers only during scheduled activities.

HARBOR COMMUNITY OUTREACH PICNIC by SF Rotary Webmaster

The San Francisco Rotary Club provides an annual Community Outreach picnic for the children of the Harbor House clients who are in the substance abuse

rehabilitation program. A jumpy house, face painter, and wonderful food are all brought together to provide a wonderful day for the children. Audrey McKeague and her committee provide all the arrangements and the SF Rotary Club's Club Service fund provides the funding for the event.
