Pride and Humility

Galatians 5:16-17 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not

gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit,

and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other,

to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

Pride and Humility

Proverbs 6:16-22 There are six things that the LORD hates, seven

that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed

innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one

who sows discord among brothers.

Pride and Humility

Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God.

Pride and Humility

Humility is, a quality by which a person considering his own defects has a humble opinion of himself and willingly submits himself to God and to others for God's sake.

• St. Bernard says, virtue is a man knowing himself as he truly is, and abases himself.

• Jesus is the ultimate definition of Humility.

Pride and Humility

Litany-type prayers are characterized by a ritual "give-and-take" between leader and people, and consist of a brief petition, followed by a ritual verse-and-response between leader and people. The leader's verse functions as a kind of "cue-line" for the people's response. The leader may say, for example, at the end of each petition, "Lord, in your mercy," and the people may respond, "Hear our prayer." Many litanies, however, can be recited privately as well.

Questions:• 1. Share one incident in your life that you experienced pride

trying to work in you or how did you learn humility.

• 2. Where am in the battle of the flesh against the Spirit, or the battle of the sins against the virtues? Is the Spirit winning? Am I growing in virtues or not?

• 3. Do I feel superior to others, even spiritually superior? Do I empathise with others’ misfortunes and care for them?

• 4. In my service, does pride play a significant role in it? Do I feel down if I do not get recognised or acknowledged in serving? How can I exercise greater humility in my service?
