4 Outdoor Education

Colorado Mountain Col-lege’s Outdoor Education associate degree emphasis blends coursework in the natural sciences, humanities, recreation and environmental awareness to provide a solid educational background you can build on.

Our programs teach leader-ship, critical thinking and decision making skills amid the outdoor ‘classroom’ of the Colorado Rocky Moun-tains. Ski the backcountry, climb a granite face or back-pack through a glacial valley while acquiring important career skills. The stunningly unique national parks of the west and southwest lie just a few hours beyond.

Graduates of the Outdoor Education program are well prepared for work in resort or community outdoor recreation programs, as outdoor guides, and for posi-tions with federal agencies or the military. Graduates www.ColoradoMtn.edu

strong academic core with a variety of courses in outdoor recreation, technical skills and field orientation.

The two-year certificate program teaches safe and ef-ficient “Leave No Trace” travel in a variety of environments along with group develop-ment, leadership theory,

conflict resolution, communi-cation and decision-making.

With a degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership, you will be able to take on a variety of exciting, adventur-ous careers. From adventure travel companies and outdoor education schools to the outdoor retail industry, your studies will prepare you to lead the pack.

4 Natural Resource Management

You’re concerned about the environment. Want to do more about it than write your congressman? In the natural resource Management (NRM) program you’ll learn hands-on techniques needed to make a difference by re-storing natural resources.

You’ll study in several differ-ent environmental settings, from high alpine forest and meadows to riparian and wetland environments. This program teaches you how to collect data, assess prob-lems, and identify solutions

According to recent research, more than 25 million visitors come to Colorado every year, and outdoor trips are now the most popular type of vacation within the state.

for a healthier environment. Students will also learn to acquire and manage Geo-graphic Information Systems (GIS) to enhance their natural resource management abili-ties. The Natural Resource Management internship course employs students for work with state, federal and private organizations, provid-ing them with valuable work experience.

Graduates work for the Na-tional Park Service, US Forest Service, fisheries and wildlife departments, private environ-mental firms and government. Articulation agreements are available for 4-year transfer to other universities.

4 Environmental Science

Colorado’s mountains, canyons and rivers offer a dynamic landscape in which to explore energy, natural resource, pollution, and envi-ronmental protection issues. Our Environmental Science emphasis introduces students

to relationships between environmental problems and biological systems and to the basic concepts of ecology.

Courses in biology, chemistry, and geology will prepare you for transfer into a four-year Environmental Science pro-gram or, based on your elec-tives, to an environmentally related program such as Geol-ogy, Environmental Engineer-ing, Environmental Health or Sustainability Studies.

4 Sustainability Studies

Be part of the wave of the future. Businesses, govern-ments, and nonprofit orga-nizations of all kinds need employees who can steer them toward sustainability. A bachelor’s degree in Sustain-ability Studies from Colorado Mountain College will posi-tion you to lead the way.

Colorado is an epicenter of sustainability. Green industries are flocking here, and the state’s clean energy industry is booming. You’ll explore sustainability through diverse perspectives, choos-ing from courses such as sus-tainable agriculture, ecology and natural resource manage-ment, sustainable business ethics and social responsibil-ity. You’ll work on real-world challenges in a beautiful, rugged landscape where many organizations and business are working out sustainability in real life situations.

“My instructors were extremely passionate about the courses they were teaching. The leadership skills and the sense of place I developed through CMC play an integral role in my work. I now see those educators as more than just teachers, I consider them mentors for life.”

- Amy Marino, Outdoor Education graduate. Transferred to Prescott College for her bachelor’s degree, now pursuing a master’s degree on a Natural Science Educator Fellowship through Colorado State University. Works as a program coordinator for the Vail Youth Foundation.
