AIADMK co- coordina-

Minister K Palaniswami

on Friday asserted that

his party will lead the

alliance in “any polls” in

the state and pointed out

that the 2019 Lok Sabha

elections were fought

under its leadership.

Hours after telling re-

porters in Tiruvarur that

electoral alliances would

be decided only during

the polls, he told the

media in Thanjavur that

right from the days of

party founder, the late

chief minister M G Ram-

achandran (MGR), the

AIADMK had led the

respective alliance.

The debate surround-

ing who will lead their

alliance in the 2021 As-

sembly elections has been

on after a BJP leader

had recently asserted that

his party has the right to

steer the combine in the

hustings next year, fol-

lowing the altered politi-

cal landscape in the state.

“Whether during the

days of MGR or Amma

(the late CM J Jayala-

lithaa), assembly polls

or lok sabha elections,

they have been faced

under the leadership of

the AIADMK,” the chief

minister told reporters in

Thanjavur.

“That will continue

(for 2021)... (the alliance)

was in last year’’s Lok

Sabha election led by the

AIADMK. So whichever

elections, AIADMK will

only head the alliance,”

he asserted.

The AIADMK led the

National Democratic Alli-

ance (NDA) in the 2019

polls, and the constituents

included the BJP, PMK

and DMDK.

Earlier in the day,

Palaniswami had said at

Tiruvarur that electoral al-

liances would be decided

only during the polls,

days after state BJP vice

president V P Duraisamy

had asserted his party

has the right to lead the

combine in the 2021 state

assembly elections.

The party that shall

head the alliance would

be made known only dur-

ing the elections and polls

were not round the corner

now, the chief minister

said when asked if the

BJP or AIADMK would

steward the combine in

Tamil Nadu to fight the

polls next year.

Speaking to reporters

after reviewing measures

to tackle the coronavirus

pandemic in the district,

Palaniswami said the

alliance have not been

firmed up yet, be it in the

AIADMK or the DMK

camp.

“Hence, only during the

run up to the elections,

alliances will be decided,”

he said.

rural population about the impor-tance of adhering to safety mea-sures, Palaniswami distributed face masks to a group of women farm workers on Friday.He enquired with the women

about whether they had received the COVID-19 relief and free rations.While on a visit to the district

to review the developmental works, Palaniswami sprang a surprise to officials and his retinue by asking his vehicle to be stopped at Adanur village in Kovilvenni in the district.The chief minister walked up

to a paddy field where a group of farmers including some women were removing the weeds and made some enquiries.The pleasantly surprised farm

workers displayed paddy stalks to the chief minister. After briefly interacting with them, the chief

minister distributed face masks to

some of the farmers who were

found not wearing masks, and

thereafter left the field.

interaction with the farmers on his

official Twitter handle, Palaniswami

said, “I am very happy to meet

the world’’s leading agricultural-

ists today in Adanur and inquired

about the planting process. I am

also happy to be a farmer.” He

assured the gathering that steps

Chennai, Aug 29:To modernise irriga-

tion programmes in the Cauvery Delta region a fund of Rs 3,384 crore has been allocated, said Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in Than-javur.Chief Minister Edap-

padi Palaniswami laid the foundation stones for 11 infrastructure development works in Thanjavur dis-trict to be implemented at a total cost of Rs. 71.27 crore.Palaniswami also inau-

gurated 36 buildings and other infrastructure facility projects completed at a cost of Rs. 39.59 crore. Chief Minister distrib-

uted welfare assistance worth Rs. 42 crore under various schemes.CM reviewed the mea-

sures taken to check spread of the novel coro-navirus and the progress of infrastructure develop-ment works being carried out in the district. He gave away welfare

assistance to the tune of Rs 46.70 crore to 8,357 beneficiariesAgriculture Minister,

R. Doraikkannu, Collec-tor M. Govinda Rao and others participated in the meeting.Addressing reporters af-

ter a review meeting, the Chief Minister said, that the state government has ensured water availability for irrigation till the tail end areas in the Cauvery Delta region. This was possible only after the proper desilting that re-vived several waterbodies across the region and it helped to save water for future use too.When his attention was

drawn to the fact that the current storage at the Stanley reservoir in Met-tur would be sufficient only for two months’ irrigation in the delta, Mr. Palaniswami said his government was taking all necessary steps to get Tamil Nadu’s due share of Cauvery water from

Karnataka. “We are taking up the

issue at the Cauvery Wa-ter Management Authority meetings. We are convey-ing our requirements and getting our due share of water as per the Supreme Court verdict,” he said. He replied in the negative when asked whether the State cess on petrol and diesel would be cut.He said several devel-

opmental projects have been made in the dis-tricts like Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur for the benefit of farmers. Among them, a fund of Rs 3,384 crore has been allotted for the revival of irrigation programmes in the region. Similarly, he laid the foundation stone for various developmental projects in Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts.The CM also announced

Chennai, Aug 29: Tamil Nadu witnessed 5,996

fresh coronavirus cases and 102 additional deaths that pushed the overall tally in the state to 4.09 lakh. With 102 fatalities, the toll reached 7,050. Recoveries stood at 5,752 as

the number of people cured rose to 3.49 lakh, a health department bulletin said. While the total infection count

touched 4.09 lakh, active cases were 52,506, it said. The state tested 75,103 samples

as the total specimens examined so far rose to 45.73 lakh.

The state capital, which has been seeing a slight increase in the cases in recent days, accounted for 1,296 new COVID-19 infections. Among the fresh deaths, as many

as 97 were owing to comorbidities, the bulletin said adding a 36-year old man from Nagapattinam died due to COVID-19 pneumonia. Of the fresh infections reported

on Friday, the neighbouring dis-tricts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet, where the city’’s suburbs are located, collectively reported 788 cases. Coimbatore and Salem in western

Tamil Nadu saw a sharp rise with

496 and 437 cases respectively. Villupuram, Vellore, Tirunelveli,

Thiruvarur, Tuticorin, Theni, Than-javur, Ranipet and Erode each recorded more than 100 cases, the bulletin said. Of the 5,996 new cases reported

today, 17 of them were returnees from various states. According to the health depart-

ment, Tamil Nadu has 146 laborato-ries for conducting COVID-19 tests -- 63 government and 83 private. Among those who contracted the

contagion today, 3,543 were men and 2,453 women patients, the bulletin added.

time MP, and working president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, who was admitted to the Apollo Hospitals on August 10 after he tested positive for coronavirus, succumbed to the illness, a party spokes-person told PTI. Vasanthakumar is sur-

vived by wife, two sons and a daughter, he said. Apollo Hospitals in a

statement later said the MP was treated in a criti-cal care unit for severe COVID pneumonia. “Despite all active medi-

cal measures, his condition deteriorated gradually due to COVID complications and he passed away today,” the hospital said. Vasanthakumar, a two-

time MLA (2006-11 and 2016-19) was elected to the Lok Sabha last year. Born on April 14, 1950,
