SDDS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR BERNARD HACKETT HONORED BY THENEW YORK STATE DENTAL ASSOCIATION

(LtoR) Michael Cali, James Sconzo, Craig Ratner, Steve Gounardes, Robert Seminara, Bernard Hackett, James Spencer, Ian Lerner,

Lauro Medrano, Deborah Pasquale, Robert Carter

SDDS President Ian Lerner presents Mr. Hackett with his award.

Mr. Hackett addresses the NYSDA Board of Governors.

Quite often, as life goes on, we begin to take things for grant-ed. At times, it is important for

us to take stock of why things run as smoothly and quietly as they do. Usu-ally it is because of the tireless efforts of those behind the scenes. These in-dividuals do not seek the spotlight but make that light shine brighter because of their work. It is with this in mind that NYSDA chose to recognize such a person, our Executive Director, Ber-nard Hackett.

At its Annual Meeting, the NYSDA Board of Governors took time from its busy business meeting to honor Mr. Hackett for his outstanding service not only to the Second District but also to the members of the state. Dr. Ian Lern-er, President of Second District, joined NYSDA President Steve Gounardes in presenting Mr. Hackett his award. Mr. Hackett was completely surprised by the presentation but managed to speak eloquently and sincerely to the assem-bly.

Mr. Hackett is known as somewhat of a veteran among the other executive di-rectors of the state’s component dental societies. His tenure with the Second District Dental Society is second only to that of Dr. Al Perna, Executive Di-rector of the 6th District and Mr. Roy Lasky, the Executive Director of the NYSDA. In that time, he has served the SDDS faithfully and with honor.

leading dental organizations in and around New York City, all of whom have representatives who serve on the DDS Advi-sory Committee: American College of Dentists, New York Section, Bronx County Dental Society, Nassau County Dental Society, New York Academy of Dentistry, New York County Dental Society, New York State Academy of General Dentistry, Ninth District Dental Asso-ciation, Queens County Dental Society, Second District Dental Society, and the Suffolk County Dental Society.

NYC DDS is looking for volun-teer dentists to provide donated services to New York’s aged and disabled residents so that they access the dental care the so desperately need but cannot afford. Academy of General Dentistry President Dr. Vinny Mayher put it well when he said:

As dentists we are blessed to be

Continued from page 1 in a profession we love and that helps people. We can change a person’s smile, a person’s attitude, and yes, even change someone’s entire life because of our skill, our training and our education. DDS provides us with a way of reaching out to some of our community’s most vulnerable people and a means of demonstrating some of our many charitable activities.

We normally reserve this section to remember SDDS members who have passed. However, there are times when we must re-member special people who have meant a lot to our society that were not necessarily members. Thus, it is with regret that we must make mention of the passing of Kayla Horowitz, wife of our Editor Emeritus and SDDS Past-President, Herb Horowitz.Kayla was a special person who accompanied Herb to almost ev-ery SDDS meeting and occasion. She was a kind and gentle per-son who could always be counted on for a kind word and a smile. Our condolences go to Dr. Horowitz and his family. Kayla will truly be missed.

At its Novem-ber Board Meeting, the New York

State Dental Association received the American Dental Association 2007 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Den-tal Health Promotion to the Public. The national award recognized the NYSDA Sugarless Wednesday program held during Children’s Dental Health Month in February.

The goal of the event is to help children become more aware of non-essential sugars in their diets and the impact that food choices have on their oral and overall health.

NYSDA expanded its Sugar-less Wednesday promotion in 2007 and partnered with SchoolFood, the New York City Department of Education food service provider. Through SchoolFood, NYSDA reached 500,000 children in more than 1,200 New York City elemen-

tary school dining rooms. NYSDA created kid-friendly posters with facts about sug-ars, healthy nutrition tips and information about the link be-tween mouth and body health. Free stickers with the mes-sages “Take a Bite for Health” and “Snack Smart” were dis-tributed the day of the event.

In addition, NYSDA provided teachers statewide with cur-riculum ideas and more than 22,000 Sugarless Wednesday “Survivor” certifi cates for students who took part in the day’s events.

CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE #2008-03Fort Hamilton Community ClubWednesday, February 6, 20089:00AM - 4:00PMMCEU - 6 Title: “Optimizing Implant Therapy by Combining Biological Principles with Technological Advances”Clinician: Akshay Kumar, D.M.D. Clinical Attending, Hackensack University Medical Center

Synopsis:Dental implants have become an accepted and predictable mode of tooth replacement. Many factors such as patient selection, mode of temporization, and fi nal restorative outcomes are involved in estab-lishing the proper treatment plan. Immediate restoration/temporization has received great attention over the last fi ve years. Today in many practices, it is considered routine care, allowing for greater patient satisfaction and increased case acceptance. Surgical procedures uti-lizing off-angled implants and CT scan-enhanced surgical templates have greatly increased simplicity and predictability, both surgically and restoratively. Through case review, this lecture will cover critical factors for maximizing success with these techniques.

With regard to achieving esthetic implant restorations, patients and clinicians expect comparable or better results to natural tooth res-torations. Also through case review, this lecture will cover several factors that play a critical role in determining to what degree a suc-cessful esthetic result can be achieved and what treatment method and sequences are necessary to achieve a certain result. Upon successful completion of this course, the attendee will gain a better understanding of treatment planning with dental implants regarding patient management and esthetics utilizing new techniques and im-proved technology.
