In the 1900’s the industrialized nations of Europe became interested in Africa’s raw materials. Their goal was to colonize and take control of parts of Africa to obtain full control of their resources.

Europeans did not want to fight each other over the land, so in 1884 fourteen countries gathered to lay down rules for dividing Africa. This became known as the Berlin Conference.

Mind you, no African leaders or rulers were invited to decide the split of their land and their continent by foreigners. The decisions on who got what land were based on who claimed they could control the land the best.

Samory Touré, leader of Sudan, was angered that he was not invited to the conference. Sudan was later invaded and defeated by the British.

The initial task of the conference was to agree that the Congo River and Niger River mouths and basins would be considered neutral and open to trade.

Despite its neutrality, part of the Congo Basin became a personal kingdom for Belgium's King Leopold II. Under his rule, over half of the region's population died.

At the time of the conference, only the coastal areas of Africa were colonized by the European powers. At the Berlin Conference the European colonial powers scrambled to gain control over the interior of the continent.

The conference lasted until February 26, 1885 - a three month period where colonial powers fought over boundaries in the interior of the continent, disregarding the cultural boundaries already established by the indigenous African population.

The conflicts that exist in Africa today and in history stem from the how the Europeans didn’t take into consideration the different tribes and cultures when drawing those boundaries. When the Europeans left, it became a fight among these tribal groups because there was a lack of stability….and the conflicts continue even today.
