For the past several years the The Lady Knights of Evans have dominated the volleyball court. This year should be no exception. Coach Lane Schuckers knows that these girls have what it takes to win championships. While walking out of the gym after a win in a scrimmage against Grovetown, Schuckers stated that he just wanted to see if they would play to their abilities. With a smile on his face, he nods and says “and they did.”
The next game the girls played was against a very solid Greenbrier team. Coach Schuckers was really smiling dur-ing that game. The Lady Knights had one of their biggest victories of the season thus far. When asked about the season, Hannah King, a junior, stated that “if we can beat Greenbrier we can be pretty good, because they are one of our biggest rivals.” A lot of that success is due to good team chemistry, which is very apparent in the Lady Knights’ efforts on the court. The tradition continues!

The ladies that play softball for T.W. Josey High School will tell you that win-ning is not everything, It’s about getting out there and having fun. And when you go out to a Josey game, you can tell that they hold true to that philosophy. The atmosphere is awesome. The players are cutting up with each other and the crowd is interacting with the players. There is laughter and kids playing around the field, all while a rivalry game is being played. At Josey, softball is played in a very refreshing and positive way. It is simply fun! Thanks, Josey fans and team for reminding us that ultimately we should play for the love of the game.

The Score OnConditioning
Athletic movement requires the ability to accelerate, decelerate, and change direction at varying speeds. There-fore, a training program should include functional movements that will increase your ability to perform on the playing field. Most strength and conditioning programs involve force production in one direction (e.g. bench press, leg exten-sions). Many weight machines provide artificial stabilization and only allow isolated single plane training.
To train functionally, the body should be thought of as a chain. This chain is made up of muscles, joints, and nerves, all working together to allow the body to perform. If any of these chains do not work efficiently, compensations and adaptations occur in the other areas. This leads to muscle fatigue, decreased performance, and injury. In order to minimize the risks of decreased performance, all parts of the chain must be trained. This includes: flexibility training;
core training; balance training; reactive training; speed, agility, and quickness training; as well as resistance training. By incorporating all of these elements into your overall workout, you will be better prepared to compete at your highest level.
The downside to functional training is that it is not beneficial for muscle growth. If the goal is muscle mass, functional training can take a back seat. However, any beginner should perform functional strength training to improve the nervous system before worrying about mass.
Functional Training vs. Traditional Strength Training
MB SquatThis is a highly advanced exercise and should not be attempted without proper training and supervision.

“For it isn’t your father or mother or wife,Who judgment upon you must pass; The fellow whose verdict counts most in your lifeIs the one starring back from the glass.”
Ask any of the young men at ARC what this poem means and they will tell you that it’s about pride, honor and the determination to be the absolute best that one can be. Coach Hughes knows a thing or two about this and he is passing it along to the young men at ARC. In the locker room before their game, these men sit, their feet anxiously tapping the floor, eyes fixed on their coach. Silently, they listen in the locker room, pondering his words and the opponent they will face on that field. Coach Hughes reminds them of the reasons why “no excuses” is painted on the wall in that locker room. He reminds them of the urgency of now and to not look back but to always make sure that they give all that they can give.
There is more than football going on in this locker room - men are being created out of boys and life long lessons are being learned. When these players take the field before each game this season, they will come out stronger than the last time. They will grow as a team and as men. Through this determination and pride, they will continue the tradition of excellence at The Academy of Richmond County.

Sports MedicineConcussions have been a hot topic, receiving attention from national organizations such as the NFL, NCAA, and NFHS. Protocols are changing. Health professionals are staying clear of terms such as “getting your bell rung” in favor of “brain injury” or “head trauma.” A concussion is much more serious than simply bumping your head and feel-ing dizzy. During a fall or collision, the brain can strike the inside of your skull, causing the brain to become bruised. This causes the brain to not work properly; depending on the location of the bruising, it can lead to a variety of physi-cal and neurologic symptoms.
The 2010 NFHS Football Rules Book states: “Any athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion (such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion or balance problems) shall be immedi-ately removed from the contest and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.”
Return-to-play protocols should be gradual and based on presence of symptoms. The SCAT 2 (Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 2) gives these stages as a guideline: - Athletes should be held from activity if experiencing ANY symptoms, and rest until they are free from symptoms for 24 hrs.- Athlete may begin light aerobic exercise (e.g. stationary cycle).- Begin sport-specific exercises.- Begin non-contact training drills (start light resistance training).- May begin full contact training after medical clearance. - Return to competition (game play).- There are 24 hours between each stage of the return to play guidelines
Athletes may feel fine before being cleared for competition. However, if an athlete plays before initial concus-sion has healed it can lead to worse symptoms, further brain injury, and even death.

Split SecondStephanie Cipollone
Have you ever met a person and you walk away just feeling bet-ter about your day? Well, one of those people that we met was Stephanie Cipollone. She not only has a kind, sweet spirit but she is also very gifted on the track. One of her finest qualities is her humility. You would never know of her achievements from just talking to her. However, Augusta Christian sure is proud of her.
Stephanie has made All-State every year that she has competed, 9th -11th grade. She was named the All Women’s Track Athlete of the Year and in the last two years she has won the 100m, 200m and 400m in the state championships. Her personal record in the
100m is 12.40 seconds, which tied the state record; her personal best in the 200m is 25.84 seconds; and in the 400m this summer, she ran a 58.77. She has participated the Amateur Athletic Union, also known as AU Track. In that event she saw her biggest potential for improvement. When asked what event she is most excited about this season, she states, “the 400, because in my AU running I have cut off over a second in a month and I was really excited about that.”
Running is just a part of Stephanie’s DNA. “I always loved running as a kid,” Stephanie said. “In 1st or 2nd grade we had a coach here that was always saying, ‘you should sprint, you should sprint.’” She has also been encouraged by her current coaches Keith Walton, Cooper and Larry Freemen. But probably the biggest influence is the overall support she has received from her school. She says that Augusta Christian has had a tremendous impact on her.
What does she have planned for this season? Well, of course it’s all about cutting off time. She is always pushing herself to run faster - every split second counts.

For A Good CauseLocal Schools Scrimmage for
American Cancer Society
For the last several years, Augusta Christian has held a scrimmage game to benefit the American Cancer Society. This event was usually played between teams that were traditional opponents of the Lions. However, the coaches decided that this year would be different. Since there are new football teams at other private schools, such as
Westminster and Augusta Prep, the coaches at Augusta Christian thought this would be a great chance for local private schools to scrimmage together. So on August 12th, they held the first local scrimmage that matched 4 of the 5 private high school football teams in our area. The way the game was set up was very interesting. Curtis Baptist played Augusta Prep in the 1st and 3rd quarter and Westminster played Augusta Christian in the 2nd and 4th quarter. This made for exciting football for all of the fans there and most importantly, it was for a great cause. Thanks to all of the coaches and the players for braving the heat and fighting cancer through football!
