The Scoop on Homemade Slime
The use and making of homemade slime or putty has become increasingly popular in
the past several years and has become a craze here at St. Peter as well. One of the
ingredients often used in homemade and store-bought slime is Borax. Borax, or
sodium borate, is a chemical that can be toxic if not safely diluted, especially if it gets
into the eyes or lungs. While it may be toxic if ingested, pediatricians say that using
small amounts of the substance for making slime shouldn’t cause any harmful
effects. Caution however, should be taken to limit the amount of dust raised when
using Borax. Also, be careful to avoid splashing the Borax mixture around in the
kitchen or other areas when the slime is being made. A final suggestion would be to
wash your hands regularly after using the slime, especially before eating. This helps
to limit the possible dangers of the Borax and bacteria and germ exposure that may
occur from the slime coming into contact with numerous hands and surfaces.

All 6th
and 7th
grade tech students have a Schoology
account in which projects and assignments are
posted. Schoology is an online learning management
system similar to Google classroom but more powerfull
and with greater capabilities. It is also the main learning
management system used in surrounding district high
schools. Student Schoology accounts were set up using
their secure school Google accounts and can be accessed
from any computer – both school and home.
All 6th
and 7th
grade students are currently completing
projects and assignments using 100% online tools which
can also be accessed from any computer.
6th
grade: We have finished coding our games in Scratch. Ask
your student to show you their game! We have been testing
out another coding program called Tynker, which is similar to
Scratch and also online. Students are completing 6 online
lessons at their own pace and receive credit when each lesson
is completed. This week, we started coding a game for St.
Patrick’s Day!
7th
grade: We have finished designing our 3D land tiles and
moved on to creating virtual reality space in an online program
called CoSpaces. With written parent permission, students
may download the CoSpaces app on their phone and students
may bring their phone to tech class only, on the day of class,
to test out their designed space. Written permission (on any
paper) must be given to me first. We have also tinkered with the
3D printers in our lab and students have enjoyed creating and
printing 3D objects.
8th
grade: We are still working on brochures; Their pictures
should be in this week, first drafts are handed in Friday 4/24.
Social media an issue for athletes, coaches – Washington Times
It started as a joke. Years ago, Anthony Morgan used a Twitter name that he knew
would make his friends laugh. And that’s how it stayed.
Source: Social media an issue for athletes, coaches – Washington Times
Kids make mistakes. That’s totally normal. The problem is that now kids make
mistakes that are public and linger. Often students do all sorts of juvenille things
online when they’re in middle school, but by the time they get to high school and are
applying to colleges they’ve forgotten all about those accounts. But they don’t
necessarily go away.
“I had a Twitter name that was something really inappropriate,” Morgan said.
He was no longer getting laughs. Now he understands the blowback.
A coach at another school told Morgan they stopped pursuing him after finding out his
Twitter name.
It’s not an uncommon story, but it still happens. When was the last time you
reminded your child to check the digital artifacts they’ve left behind?
When was the last time YOU checked your own?

it is due to all of your time and efforts over the weekend!
Upon completion of the seasons, basketball uniforms should
be turned into coaches OR the athletic office washed and in a
bag marked with the student-athlete’s name.
The Boys Varsity Basketball team compiled a 30-8 record
this season and won the St. Raymond and Grace Classic

Well, we have finished the Algebra book
and students have been tasked with the
challenge to take a cumulative test over
the entire book. That is 1.5 years of
learning and is like a final exam would
be in high school. I allowed them to use
a cheat sheet and they are working out
the start of a statistics unit. We
will be working on measures of
central tendencies, histograms,
and circle graphs.
8th grade - We will start
working in chapter 9. Students
will be learning how to solve
quadratic equations and
functions. We will start off
working on problems with
radicals.
the cobwebs to complete this task. It is
a tough process and they are struggling
a bit, but it is good preparation for what
is to come when they leave me. We will
finish those tests next week, as it has
been broken into 2 parts. Since I really
only have 3 days next week with the
majority of them, we will review these
exams in detail and start some Algebra 2
and Geometry after spring break.

Science in the News…
Did you know… Temperatures across Earth’s mantle are about 60
degrees Celsius higher than previously thought, a new experiment
suggests. The mostly solid mantle sits between Earth’s crust and core
and makes up around 84 percent of Earth’s volume. Such toasty
temperatures would make the mantle runnier than earlier research
suggested, a development that could help explain the details of how
tectonic plates glide on top of the mantle, geophysicists report in the
March 3 Science.
Specifically speaking…
6th Grade
We ended our unit on the study of climates and climate regions this
week with an open note review on this chapter. We will be doing a lab
related to the concepts we learned in this unit next week.
7th Grade
We finished our unit on Modern Genetics with a study of genetic
engineering and DNA fingerprinting. We conducted a virtual lab on how
DNA fingerprinting is done and its uses and reliability. We will be testing
over this unit next week.
8th Grade
We spent this week studying the different factors that affect the
rates of chemical reactions and also learned more about the fire triangle
and fire safety. We finished the week reviewing balancing chemical
equations along with reviewing the chapter for our test next week.
Eighth graders Jake Arrowood, Carson Milligan, and Jim Padar
represented our school on March 9 in a science competition called You
Be the Chemist Challenge. This competition was sponsored by UOP
Honeywell Corporation and is designed to encourage interest in the area
of chemistry among middle school students. They were part of this
academic science competition that involved thirty-four middle school
students from eleven schools in the Arlington Heights, Hoffman Estates,
and Schaumburg area. St. Peter was the one of the two non-public
schools that participated. Congratulations to our students who made it to
the four of seven rounds in the competition. We are proud of Jake,
Carson, and Jim’s great representation of our school!
