The Science of Machining
Machining is the process of cutting materials together so
another product or form is created. It entails different
processes and only highly-trained experts are able to provide
quality materials through machining. Machining is commonly
done in the custom fabrication process. In this process, the
materials are manufactured within the specification set by a
particular industry.
Machining – Then and Now
Machining was already practiced in the early times. The
experts are generally known as the machinist, who did all the
work by hand. The process simply includes hand-filing and
forging of the materials and carving the materials manually.
Over the years, the process evolved into what it is today, in
which it is done to manufacture different metal materials.
More so, woods, plastics and ceramics are created by means
of machining. Currently, a machinist does machining by using
state-of-the-art equipment to control the whole process and
produce more durable and reliable materials.
Operations in Machining
There is a 3 step process involved in machining: drilling,
turning and milling. The turning process is done by moving
the materials against a sharp cutting tool. The machine used
in turning is called the lathes. After turning, the material is
then milled. In this process, the cutting tool rotates against
the material to produce planer surfaces, cutouts or slots. The
last step is drilling which involves cutting the material with a
rotating cutter. Drilling is done to create holes which are
usually done with a drill press.
Machining Tips
Since machining involves difficult processes, chipping of the
materials is commonly observed. However, there are several
tips done to ensure that the materials will remain as even as
ever.
The cutting machine should be maintained sharp at all times. The
sharpness of the cutting machine will ensure accuracy in the entire
process of machining. Keep the cutting edges sharp by proper
maintenance and care.
Some types of materials may need coolants or lubricants. The
temperature of the metals have different effects on the
machining process. For example, the stainless steel is
conducive to cold temperatures and so it has to be applied
with lubricants for accurate machining.
Machine tools with reduced vibration are ideal. A reduced
vibration means lower movement. As a result, the materials
are created in quicker and more accurate ways.
These are the basics of machining. It does involved difficult
process so it is done only be well-trained professionals. The
process of custom fabrication also involves machining – and
only a few manufacturers are able to produce high-end
products.
