Happy and Prosperous Chinese New Year!

May the year of the Goat

bring you & your family

bountiful joy and great success!

This has been a very busy week on the campus

as the International Primary School have

enjoyed Literacy Week, while elsewhere prepa-

rations for Chinese New Year have been

frenetic. The display for Chinese New Year in the

entrance to the Administration Block is very

striking indeed and thanks go to Ms. Michelle

and her Art Department Colleagues for putting it

together. This morning I attended the Chinese

New Year Assembly at the Early Years Centre

and it was a delight to watch the expressions on

the children’s faces as they enjoyed the Lion

Dance which was wonderfully performed by our

Secondary School students.

Wednesday saw the first meeting of our newly

formed Parents Association Executive Commit-

tee. More details of that meeting appear later in

this newsletter as well as a brief introduction

from each committee member. This very commit-

ted and able group of volunteers are there to

ensure that the parent body is well represented

in school life and activity and are an essential

sounding board for school managers. The meet-

ing covered much useful ground. All parents are

welcome to contact committee members on any

issue and can also reach the committee through

their mailbox at [email protected]. A mes-

sage to this address automatically is distributed

to all members of the Executive Committee. You

can also follow the association through its Face-

book page. We are very grateful to those parents

who served on the previous PA Committee and

thank them very much for their hard work and

what they achieved.

Thanks go to all parents for being supportive as

we introduced the new traffic scheme earlier this

week, particularly those who turned out early in

the morning to help direct the traffic flow. Overall

it seems to have gone well, but at the time of

writing we have yet to see the departure of stu-

dents on Friday lunchtime! More feedback on

this next week. We do take this opportunity to

remind everyone that on entering the campus

cars should take the left hand lane to access

Blocks A, B, C and D and the right hand lane to

access the Administration and MPH car park

area.

Parents in International

Primary will have received a

letter this week announcing

the appointment of Mr

Harvey’s successor. I am

delighted to inform you that

Mr Peter O’Sullivan will be

taking over from Mr Harvey

in September. Peter is from

Australia, is a very experienced school principal

both in his home country and overseas and a

very warm and positive character. He is married

to Margaret and they have two grown up

children. We look forward to welcoming them to

Ipoh.

In the interim Mr. David Key, Head of

International Primary at Tenby in Johor Bahru

will be the acting head of International Primary

for the Summer Term. David is also a very

experienced principal and we look forward to

welcoming him and his wife Jane into our

community in April.

With very best wishes for a happy Chinese New

Year Celebration,

Howard Bullock

From the Campus Principal

A very useful paper as to how the Commit-

tee should move forward was circulated by

one of our members and this will be

discussed at our next meeting.

An election was held for the posts of Vice

Chair and Secretary and the following

appointments made:

Mr. Wei Yeong Vice Chair

Pn Erina Musa Secretary

It was agreed that they would serve for a

term of one year in the first instance.

The following sub-committees were decided

upon:

Co-curricular activities

New parent welcome

Health and Safety

Canteen/ bookshop/vendors

Parental Concerns

Early Years Centre, Ipoh

All members were asked to provide some

personal details so that everyone is aware

of who they are and which section of the

school they represent.

The new Executive Committee of our

Parents’ Association held its first meeting

on Wednesday of this week. We were

pleased to welcome our new members and

to welcome back those who had served on

the committee previously. As a school we

are very grateful to all parents who give of

their time and expertise to help us in this

way and we say a big thank you to the out-

going committee for everything that they

have achieved.

Wednesday’s meeting was a very open and

positive one; full minutes will be made avail-

able to all parents once they have been

adopted at the next meeting as will all

subsequent minutes to ensure transparency

for everyone. The following key statements

of intent were clear:

The Executive Committee exists to

represent the views of all parents

across both campuses for the further

development of the school and for the

benefit of all students by supporting the

school in its work and activities

The Executive Committee seeks to be

transparent in all of its activities and

encourages open communication

The Executive Committee seeks to

support parents when needed if they

have concerns about their children indi-

vidually or the school as a whole

Through the establishment of sub-

committees the Executive Committee

gives detailed focus to specific areas of

school life

Through the organisation of social and

fund raising events the Executive

Committee seeks to bring the parental

community together for the benefit of

our students

Firstly, for all those who will be reveling in the Chinese New Year celebrations, I wish

you and your families a happy, safe and wonderfully festive occasion. I have been

impressed how within the Tenby Ipoh community we come together to celebrate a

plethora of festivals of various cultural and religious backgrounds. It helps us to drive

towards being a “United World at Peace through Education’. As someone who is new

still relatively new to this region of the world, I can’t tell you just how much me, my

wife, Juliette and children Nathaniel and Niamh have so enjoyed this particularly

element of life in Ipoh. Sharing such experiences adds tremendous value to all con-

cerned.

I also wanted to take the opportunity to say a hearty and sincere well done, and thank you to the entire

parent-body who have so warmly and amicably embraced the new traffic flow system. The first four

days have been a positive journey of discovery and refinement and it has clearly worked well. It is to

your credit that the system has been relatively seamless and successful.

After the half term vacation, all students within TISSI will be registered using the ‘Engage’ data manage-

ment system. Students will be registered online and using the traditional class registers for morning

registration and so please ensure that any information pertaining to absences through illness, family

circumstances, agreed vacation time and for any other reason are shared in a timely fashion.

The old adage goes that there is “no rest for the wicked”. However, please let me take this opportunity

to make a plea on behalf of our students to ensure that there is ample time set aside for rest, reflection

and relaxation. Breathing space away from book work or tutors lessons is invaluable to maintaining the

health and mental well-being of all of our amazing students. It is a holiday, so time to celebrate with our

loved ones and in our wide pool of friends.

School reopens on Monday 23rd

February and we look forward to welcoming everyone back with us at

that time.

Stay safe.

I am sure you will be tired of hearing about traffic this week, however I would

like thank you for your patience with this New System. I am unaware of any

perfect traffic system at any school, but with your support I feel that we are

improving the access to the school and safety on the campus. With this in

mind, may I remind you that our campus speed limit is 20 Kph (kilometres per

hour). Students, parents and staff are crossing the roads at all times of the

day and after a few near misses this week I would ask you all to be careful

and vigilant.

On a lighter note this week in Tenby International Primary School Ipoh, we have had our

Literacy Week which has meant lots of exciting competitions all designed to support Literacy

Skills, with the finale being a prize giving assembly that took place on Thursday. We also had

the Scholastic Book Store for three days and I would like to thank members of the PA for

manning it the whole time.

Future events include KS1/EYC theatre trip and the Year 4 assembly.

As we say goodbye to this half-term and look forward to the next, may I wish you all a safe

and happy holiday.

From the Head of International Primary

Warmest Greetings to all.

I attended the PA meeting last Saturday (7 February 2015) which was held

at 10 am in the school auditorium. The number of parents who turned up for

the meeting was very encouraging. This is an indication of the awareness

among parents of their role in their children’s education.

While teachers and school undoubtedly play a critical role in educating and developing chil-

dren, parental involvement in a child’s education can make a difference in learning outcomes.

Parents need to realise that they play an important role in contributing to the success of their

children’s education. In fact, there are many beneficial parent-child activities that involve rela-

tively little time and no specialized knowledge.

The role of the PA can be expanded to provide a platform for parents to learn and share best

practices in working with and supporting their children in the learning and growing process.

PA members may also help improve the effectiveness and impact of school activities and

programmes.

Congratulations to the new team of PA Committee Members. Thank you so much for coming

forward to help the school. I am looking forward to having a close and strong working relation-

ship with all of you.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all the staff, students and parents a very

‘Happy Chinese New Year’. May the Year of the Ram bless all of you with lots of good health,

happiness and prosperity.

Here comes another week of holiday for the Chinese New Year. We

welcome the Year of Goat and bid farewell to the Year of Horse. I am sure

that all parents celebrating this festival, are looking forward to be with their

families. Chinese New Year is a time for families to get together. This morn-

ing, the Chinese New Year celebration kicked off with our very own senior

students entertaining the children with a lion dance performance. It is

believed that the lion is an auspicious animal that brings good luck during

the spring festival. Our lion dancers imitated the lion’s various movements

and actions, performed in a lion costume,

accompanied by the music of beating

drums and gong instruments. All the chil-

dren and teachers looked lovely in their

traditional Chinese costumes and every-

one had a great time watching the various

performances by the children.

Last but not least, I would like to congratulate the 2015 -16 PA committee and, we at TEYCI

are looking forward to work closely with the new team.

Enjoy your break which will be from Saturday, 14th

February 2015 to Sunday, 22nd

February 2015 and be back on Monday, 23

rd February 2015.

Wishing all our Chinese parents “A Happy and Prosperous Chinese New Year”.

Thank You:

The nursery and reception children would like to thank all the boys and girls from KS2 who came to read stories to them this week. They had a lovely time.

Little Fish Nursery Class:

Activities in the Little Fish classroom contin-ue to be centered on their Animal topic. The nursery children are still getting a lot from their ‘animals’ topic. Here they have been washing animals in their bubbly water tray, and taking photos of animals while on safari.

Busy Bees and Dragonfly Reception Classes:

The reception classes are always busy across the curriculum! As we have a “learning through play” approach, here are some of the ways that the children have learnt this week.

On the second day of the conference we had our

breakfast and then headed to our 5th speaker session

by Raja Singham, Co-Founder of Brickfields Asia

College. His talk was about “Career Choices”. Our 6th

speaker session was by Victor Ong, Corporate Lec-

us about Youth Empowerment and she was none

other than by Ms Deborah Henry, Miss Universe Ma-

laysia 2011. And then we had our Interact Quiz led by

Rotarian Nigel Jones.

The 8th speaker session was on “Spreading Your

Wings” by stand-up Comedian Steven Fernando, also

a trainer and a motivator. Finally our last speaker for

that day was Sophia Catha, a motivational speaker

telling us about “Facing Life’s Challenges”. After that,

we were then separated into our groups to discuss

about our plans for the show time which had to be in

line with our theme for the seminar, “Staying’ In-

spired”. After our group discussion, we gathered for

dinner and at 8.30 we were back to the auditorium to

perform our act.

On the last day we started off our day at 8.15 a.m. at

the auditorium to receive our respective awards for

the best projects. Our finale was from our last speak-

er, Dato’ Siva Ananthan on the topic “The Power of

One”. Then it was time to bid our farewells.

District Interact Conference 2014 was an amazing

journey and we had fun meeting other interactors and

learning about many projects done by other schools.

It definitely was a mind opening seminar and we will

attend the District Interact Conference of 2015.

Over the past few weeks, Tenby Schools Ipoh

have participated in and been successful in

several sporting competitions. On the last

weekend in January we sent a team of U15

badminton players to a competition being held

at the Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur. Their

annual U15 Badminton Competition receives a

lot of interest from international schools across

Malaysia, and has been one which we regular-

ly attend. In the girl’s singles event, Chung Pui

Leng finished runner up (U15) and overall our

school finished in 3rd

position for the team

event. Many congratulations to all those who

participated and represented Team Tenby

Ipoh.

Early last week the Badminton MSSD was held

at the M.B.I. badminton courts in Ipoh and here

more of our students enjoyed further success.

In the U18 boys’ category, Tan Choong Yen

finished the singles event as runner up, nar-

rowly missing out on first place. Across all age

categories (U12, U15 and U18) we had 14 stu-

dents representing the school in this badminton

tournament and our thanks and congratulations

go out to all those involved.

Still on the subject of participation in MSSD

competitions, last week saw 26 students take

part in the MSSD Cross Country runs held at

SMK Ulu Kinta. This event saw huge interest

from schools within this district and most races

had between 150 and 200 runners taking part.

With this in mind it gives me great pleasure to

announce that we had 9 runners finish in the

top 50, with 4 of them finishing inside of the top

20 in their respective age categories. Those

finishing within the top 20 were Tan Shing Yee

(11th), Rikitada Araki (13

th), Warunya Lawpat-

tanagoon (16th) and Ishagit Kaur (17

th). Huge

congratulations to all those who took part in

what was a very tough and competitive cross

country run.

U15

Last weekend saw Tenby Schools Ipoh

make their first appearance at the ISAKL

Track and Field Championships 2015. This

competition had been hugely anticipated by

all those involved and was a very success-

fully organised event. Our school had 29

participants that competed in a range of

track and field events across the U13, U15

and O15 age categories. Of the 78 events

that took place on the day, Tenby Schools

Ipoh entered 50 of these. I can say with an

immense amount of pride that our students

managed to achieve top 3 positions and

trophies in 43 of the 50 events that were

entered, with 14 gold, 13 silver and 16

bronze! Overall our school finished in 3rd

position behind Mutiara International Gram-

mar School and the winners Garden Inter-

national School.

A humongous thank you and congratula-

tions to all of our students for the effort they

put in with their training and preparation for

this competition and how they all came to-

gether to support and help one another at

what was an incredibly successful and en-

joyable event.

A massive thank you must also go to the

team of teachers that have assisted with

the preparation and training of our students

prior to this event (Mr. Roy Hendra, Mr.

Teoh Wah Kin, Mr. Ian Hayes) as well as

those that provided their support and guid-

ance over the weekend (Mr. Teoh Wah Kin,

Dr. Jeff Rowlands, Ms. Nikki Sullivan and

Ms. Adelena Dass).
