Laden in culture and teeming with fantastic destinations, Belize is fast be-coming known for great family educational vacationing. A vacation with thekids can be fun and the entire family can learn so much more from the Belizeanculture, more now than ever before. According to the Belize Tourism Board(BTB), this vacation trend is fast catching on more businesses are highlightinggetaways catered for the entire family. These getaways offer unique learningexperiences, embedded in the destination’s rich culture and everyday life. Fromthe cultural center of Punta Gorda, where Maya life is still alive and well, to theanimal sanctuaries and expeditions of the central and northern regions, Belizeoffers distinctive learning opportunities sure to astound parents and childrenalike. The Belize Tourism Board has five good reasons why families should choseBelize as a Family Vacation Destination and The San Pedro Sun could not agreemore. Here are your five reasons:

Family fun vacationing in Belize

Do you ever pass the small, thatchedroof houses dotting sides of the highwaysand wish you could meet the families wholive there? The mission of this programis to provide just that chance by connect-ing persons desiring to share life and learnfrom the traditional way of life lived bythe Mayans. Visitors on this cultural ex-change program will sleep in the samehouse with the family, share meals and

chores around the house. The experiencesmay also include harvesting corn orworking in the fields (for the men) orgrinding the corn, killing chickens, mak-ing tortillas or doing laundry in the creek(for the women). The visitor is treatedas part of an extended family, an aunt, cousin or uncle, not as anyone “special.”Living conditions are simple and there isnot much privacy. Meals are the same

as the family eats everyday which is defi-nitely corn tortilla at each meal along witheggs, beans and hot pepper or sometimesgame meat. The experience is not foreveryone and there are a variety of pro-grams to meet the interests of visitors. One thing is for sure, participants willhave an unforgettable experience and sto-ries to tell! The program began in the early 1990sas Alfredo and Yvonne Villoria workedwith local villages to create a grass-rootshomestay program in the Toledo District. While they help to market the programand work with visitors, each of the threeactive villages (Aguacate, Na Luum Caand San Jose) has a coordinator whoworks with participating families in the

villages. Currently, there are approxi-mately 20 families taking part in the pro-gram. The registration fee that is paidfor the program benefits the entire vil-lage, not just the families participating.Be One With Belize’s Butterflies andIguanas: The lush tropical forests of San Ignaciohouse animal sanctuaries unlike any otherdestination. Nestled on the grounds of theChaa Creek Resort in the Cayo District, the Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm allowsvisitors to tour and observe every stageof a butterfly’s life cycle, offering anunmatched interactive learning experi-ence. Nearby at the San Ignacio Resort Ho-

tel, the Green Iguana Project is a highlyinterpretive and educational exhibit whichhas been designed within the Resort’sproperty in order to create a closer lookat this amazing reptile, and to learn howvital they could be to the ecological bal-ance of the river habitat. The San Ignacio Hotel offers theAdopt an Iguana Program and the IguanaKids Club, which have received muchattention locally and internationally. Theprocess of egg incubation, hatching, rear-ing and releasing juvenile iguanas is anongoing process on site. Visitors andschool children alike are given the op-portunity to have contact with one of themany young resident iguanas. The pro-gram aims to create awareness, educateand releases these reptiles into the wildin an effort to repopulate the riverbanksof Belize with these colorful creatures. This unique encounter with the descen-dants of the dinosaurs takes an hour tocomplete and may be combined with acomplete guided Medicinal Jungle Trailtour, hiking along the Macal River, birdwatching, swimming, and even lunch atthe resort. Adjacent to the Iguana exhibitis an extensive Medicinal Jungle Trail.

The Southwater CayeMarine Park is an ideal snor-keling and scuba diving loca-tion due to its close proximityto the mainland and incrediblebiodiversity that awaits explor-ers. rier reef. Families can scuba dive orsnorkel along the unbroken stretch ofthe reef, which includes 10 majorcayes, stalagmites, stalactites and a

wealth of marine life and color-ful coral wherever they turn. Onesuch tour is the Jungle DawnTour. As dawn breaks and themist rises through the canopy, explore the jungle as it awakens. In the company of a naturalistguide the family will learn aboutthe intricacies of a habitat that ishome to creatures as diverse asthe jaguar, the impressive BlackHowler monkey, the Jaguarundiand the vividly-colored Keel-Billed toucan. Or, how about theSpotlight Nature Safari? Afterdinner, climb aboard one of ourcomfortable custom built riversafari boats and head out into thenight. This exciting adventuregives you the opportunity to en-counter anything from theMorelet’s crocodile to the elu-sive and endangered jaguar. All

“Johnny Greif, how are you doing?” “Pretty good, overall,” Johnny said to me. I was sitting on the deck at the Holiday Hotel, having my morning coffee as I admiredmy view of the reef and the blue-green water. “Pull up a chair and tell me about how things are at Tropic Air,” I said. “I see youhave a brand new terminal, so things must be pretty good.” “Things are going well,” he said, as he pulled up a seat, “but it is a lot of work.” “Over the last few years I’ve noticed that the quality of everything has improveddramatically at Tropic Air,” I told him. “I use the cargo service all the time and I thinkit is one of Tropic’s best features.” “We are proud of the cargo service,” he said, “but even that can be an awful headacheat times. I’ll give you and example but you’ve got to promise to keep it just between youand me.” “Sure.” “Yesterday we brought over an animal shipment container from a veterinarian inBelize City. When it got here someone noticed that the cat inside was dead.” “Oh, no! Whose cat was it?” “It was for Captain Jeff. You know him?” “Yeah. I know Jeff. What did you do about it? “One of our employees had a yellow striped cat at home that looked just like the deadone. He volunteered to give us the cat, so we switched the live one for the dead one.” “That’s great,” I said. “He’ll never know. I mean, a cat’s a cat. Right?” About that time we heard, “Johnny! Johnny Greif!” “Oh, no!” Johnny said, under his breath. “It’s Captain Jeff.” Jeff walked up to our table with a big smile on his face and said, “Your airline cargoservice works miracles.” “How is that?” Johnny asked. “My cat was at the veterinarian in Belize City. He died and the vet shipped him backout here so I could bury him. They put him on the plane dead and he arrived hereresurrected. It’s a miracle!” “Our goal is customer satisfaction,” Johnny said. “There’s no extra charge for miracles.”
