Are Salt & Sodium The Same Thing?

• Salt is a chemical compound formed when a mineral like Sodium bonds with another mineral like Chloride. All salts contain sodium and chloride

Does It Really Matter? Sodium is absolutely essential for life in animals, including humans. It serves important functions like helping the brain and nerves send electrical impulses.

Salt is used for various purposes, the most common is adding flavour to foods. Salt is also used as a food preservative, because bacteria have trouble growing in a salt-rich environment.

The great majority of sodium in the Western diet comes from processed foods. If you eat mostly whole, unprocessed foods then you don’t need to worry about adding some salt to your meals.

In addition to salt, sources of sodium include monosodium glutamate (MSG); sodium citrate; sodium nitrate; baking soda; sodium bicarbonate; and sodium benzoate.

What’s The Difference?Table Salt•Table salt is typically mined from

underground salt deposits and is more heavily processed to eliminate minerals and usually contains additives.

•Most table salt has added iodine, Ferrocyanide, talc and aluminium which are known to cause cancer, Alzheimer's and other neurological disorders.

Himalayan Pink Salt•The salt is still extracted from

mines by hand according to long-standing tradition and without the use of any mechanical devices or explosion techniques

•84 trace minerals include sulphate, magnesium, calcium, potassium, bicarbonate, bromide, borate, strontium, and fluoride .

Sea Salt•Sea salt is produced through

evaporation of ocean water or water from saltwater lakes, usually with little processing.

•There are between 75-80 trace minerals in sea salt which include potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, bromine, boron, zinc, iron, manganese, copper and silicon, amongst others.

Salt’s Effects On Your Body

Kidneys• Your body removes

unwanted fluid by filtering your blood through your kidneys. Here any extra fluid is sucked out and put into your bladder to be removed as urine.

Blood• To do this, your

kidneys use osmosis to draw the extra water out of your blood. This process uses a delicate balance of sodium and potassium to pull the water across a wall of cells from the bloodstream into a collecting channel that leads to the bladder.

Salt• Eating too much

salt raises the amount of sodium in your bloodstream and wrecks the delicate balance, reducing the ability of your kidneys to remove the water.

Salt’s Effects On Your Body

A diet high in sodium is linked to high blood

pressure. As sodium rises, so does blood pressure.

When your blood pressure rises, your heart must

pump harder to circulate blood throughout your

body. The result is increased pressure against

your artery walls. This places extra stress on your

arteries and your heart. Artery walls thicken to

deal with the added pressure, which causes

them to become narrow.

If you continue to eat too much salt then,

over time, the damage caused by the extra blood pressure may

become so severe that the arteries burst or become completely

clogged.If this happens, then the part of the heart

that was receiving the blood no longer gets

the oxygen and nutrients it needs and

dies. The result is a heart attack.

Salt’s Effects On Your BodyBrain

The raised blood pressure caused by eating too much salt may damage the arteries leading to the brain.

At first, it may cause a slight reduction in the amount of blood reaching the brain. This may lead to vascular dementia.

With this condition the cells in the brain don't work as well as they should because they are not receiving enough oxygen and nutrients.

If you continue to eat too much salt then, over time, the damage caused by the extra blood pressure may become so severe that the arteries burst or become completely clogged.

If this happens, then the part of the brain that was receiving the blood no longer gets the oxygen and nutrients it needs and dies. The result is a stroke.
