With this Mass, celebrated in the evening of the Thursday in Holy Week, the Church begins the sacred Paschal Triduum and devotes itself to the remembrance of the Last Supper. At this last supper on the night

GOOD FRIDAYTHE CELEBRATION OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD

On this day, when “Christ our paschal lamb was sacrificed (1 Corinthians 5:7),”what had long been promised in signs and figures was at last revealed and brought to fulfillment.

The true lamb replaced the symbolic lamb, and the many offerings of the pastgave way to the single sacrifice of Christ.

In contemplating the cross of its Lord and bridegroom, the Church commemorates its own origin and its mission to extend to all peoples

the blessed effects of Christ’s passion that it celebrates on this day in a spirit of thanksgiving for his marvelous gift.

(Ceremonial of Bishops, no. 312)

The faithful are encouraged to place a cross or crucifix in an appropriate place in their home as they unite themselves in prayer to the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord.

During the Adoration of the Holy Cross, this cross or crucifix may be adored by means of a genuflection or bow.

All stand as the procession begins. The people kneel when the bishop, priests, and deacon prostrate themselves before the altar.

THE SHOWING OF THE HOLY CROSS

The celebrant receives the Cross, unveils a portion of it, and elevates it as the cantor sings the verse. The people sing the response and then kneel, briefly adoring the Cross in silence. Then the people stand and the unveiling of the Cross continues in a like manner.

THE ADORATION OF THE HOLY CROSS

Once the Cross has been placed behind the altar, all come forward to adore it and are seated afterward.

Only the celebrant adores the Cross by touching it; all others adore the Cross by means of a genuflection or bow.

Those at home may adore their cross or crucifix in the same way.
