A Message from the Alumnae Association PresidentAnna Romano ’83

On October 23rd, 2015, the Alumnae Association welcomed over 160 Sacred Heart alumnae to our beautiful school to celebrate their high school reunion with friends and reminisce about their days as young women at the Sacred Heart. Whether they wore woolen tartans, the teal tunic and Wallabies or the current polished look of the kilt, white blouse and vest, the ladies came together as one enthusiastic family. It is truly a delight to see the smiles on so many faces as they reacquaint themselves with the school and one another. Needless to say, the decibel level was quite high.

For many years, the Alumnae Association has hosted such wonderful gatherings of Sacred Heart alumnae. What brings so many women together year after year? Perhaps it is the sense of belonging to family consisting of a community of women who share traditions, experiences and even our own “language”. In fact, if you visit sophie.org, the website of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, you will discover a “Glossary of Terms” highlighting terms particular to a Sacred Heart education. Goûter anyone?

The Alumnae Association is committed to keeping this family united and vibrant by providing opportunities to gather, to exchange, and to come visit. Upcoming events for 2016 include something for everyone: a Winter Gala, the Spring Tea & Mass, a reunion in Toronto and the annual Golf tournament. We encourage you to attend with your families and friends and look forward to seeing you there.

A Message from the Head of SchoolShawn O’Donnell

From our Chromebooks pilot project to Google Apps for Education, many exciting developments are happening at the school. Teachers are working on Curriculum Mapping and engaging with students through the use of technology on a regular basis. As we progress in the use of 21st century technology and tools, please rest assured that our commitment to values and community service is as strong as

ever. Our students continue to raise awareness and funds for women’s cancers and other worthy causes. This March we will celebrate our 5th Community Service Day where all students and faculty go out into the community and help a grass roots charity.

Our Robotics Team has once again teamed up with Loyola and will be competing in the First Robotics Competition. Students continue to present poetry and stories at BLCs, in both English and French, perform in music and drama productions, as well as shine in our much-loved Arts Festival. The athletics program continues to produce competitive teams with great sportsmanship.

Our new Director of Academics, Anika Maloni ’97 has made a tremendous impact already, and is leading students and teachers in areas of curriculum development and best practices. She has presented her research on “The Benefits of An-All Girls Education” at our school, in parishes, and will be presenting to the parents of École Bilingue Notre-Dame de Sion, one of our feeder schools, in February.

Our recruiting season for 2016/17 was the most successful campaign in over ten years. Next year, we will have 3 Secondary I classes. We are very excited about this increase in enrolment.

There are many exciting things happening at Sacred Heart; please drop by and see for yourself. Our alumnae are always welcomed here by staff and students alike!

The Parlour, Chapel, hallways and Reception Room were filled with alumnae reminiscing and reconnecting with former classmates. Thank you to all the alumnae who contributed to the event through their attendance, donations and sponsorship. “Matinée de Mentorat”The Sacred Heart Spirit of Giving

We are overjoyed to report that the School’s Christmas Initiatives were extremely successful, and helped to reach many less fortunate people not only in the immediate Montreal community, but around the world. We are thankful for the School’s commitment to social action and consistently going above and beyond the call of duty in addressing the needs of those less fortunate during the holidays. This generous and selfless spirit is truly what makes Sacred Heart a special place and distinguishes us as not only an institution dedicated to education, but the education of the Spirit. Some of our recent accomplishments include: Christmas Baskets for 12 families and 11 individuals of St. Gabriel’s Parish. Spare Change Tuesdays where a total of $450 was raised and used to buy gifts for the Christmas baskets. Denim Day for Uganda and sales at the Christmas Bazaar helped to raise $1 032 for our sponsored children in Uganda. Proceeds from the sale of Candy Cane-O-Grams were donated to Chez Doris, a Montreal-based shelter for women. And finally, the 130 toys collected during the Toy Drive were donated to children whose families could not afford to get them gifts this year. A special thank you to Father Joe Sullivan for celebrating Christmas Mass with us and to all the students, parents and alumnae who came to watch Christmas Wishes and stayed for mass. Your continued support of the School and community is greatly appreciated! The Religion Department is thankful to all who have helped us this year.

Annual Campaign: Thank you for Your Continued Support! The alumnae of The Sacred Heart School of Montreal are very important to the school’s ongoing mission of graduating young women of action with tools for success. Alumnae support comes in many forms, whether it be participating in activities such as the mentorship morning or sponsoring and attending school and alumnae events. In addition, donations made to the Bursaries & Scholarships Fund enable families who may not otherwise be able to afford it, a Sacred Heart education for their daughters.

The goal of the 2015-2016 Annual Campaign is $250,000 and, at present, we are 50% of the way there. The alumnae, thus far, have contributed $13,265. Thank you!

If you have not already made your contribution, please consider doing so . No gift is too small… or too big! Online donations can be made via the school’s website at www.sacredheart.qc.ca . Checks made out to the City House Foundation can be mailed to the school at 3635 Atwater, Montreal QC H3H 1Y4. For more information about major gifts or planned giving, please contact Major Gifts Coordinator Lili Le Fèvre (parent ’13) at 514-937-2845 ext. 148 or at [email protected].
