Once again, I would like to say a big “thank you” to all of our

advertisers who have supported us over a very difficult year and to all of our

new advertisers who can see the benefit of advertising in the South African. It is only natural that people are attracted to each other by common bonds and South Africans are starting to support each other in a big way. How many of your friends have South African doctors, dentists and gynae’s? Well most, actually and that is why we have so many professionals supporting this publication.

We have an article in the same vein in this month’s issue highlighting our tradesmen on page 4 from whom you can get honest & efficient workmanship. Not all of our advertisers are South African but they can see that we are good customers to have. We are loyal and do not mind paying the price, as long as we get good value for money.

The recession is still biting so please help families in need and encourage them to attend the monthly social meetings at Browns Bay Bowling Club the first Friday of every month, where you may meet someone who could become your soul mate, or just chew the fat with people who understand the pain of immigration. All of the “ou manne” who have been in New Zealand for a while will tell you the pain goes away after three years and soon you realise that you have made the best choice for you and your family by coming here.

If you are in business please read the article on “Cash Flow is still King” on page 17 to help you through these tough times. If you have lost your job, do not despair you are not alone. Do not hide the fact but speak to others who may know someone who may have a job for you. This is called networking. Go out and network.

Certain groups in the health industry play on people’s fear of sickness. In the dental sphere—the use of amalgam

is contentious.

The debate still goes on; do we remove amalgam from teeth that are symptom-free and for what purpose?

Let’s look at the pro’s and con’s.

The following has been endorsed by the New Zealand Dental Association:-

“The NZDA reaffirms the safety of dental amalgam as a restorative material. Patients can be reassured that their amalgam fillings, whether old or new, have not been shown to constitute a threat to their health.

There is no current scientific evidence to show that patients may develop diseases as a result of placement of these fillings or that the removal of amalgam filings will improve their health or result in remission of illnesses. The FDI World Dental Federation and the World Health Organization, supports the use of dental amalgam as safe and effective.

On the current state of knowledge there is no justification for a dentist to promote the removal of amalgam and replacement with other materials for health reasons. A dentist who suggests that the removal of amalgam has the capacity to cure or alleviate disease, infections or other conditions, is acting unethically, since such treatments are not based on accepted scientific knowledge or research.

There are occasional reported cases of allergies or local side effects to dental amalgam and the metals comprising this dental filling material. In these instances, the dentist should avoid the use of amalgam. Such documented cases are rare and the risk is considered very low for all types of restorative materials.”

If people are concerned about the hype going around about the relationship of amalgam to multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, chronic fatigue syndrome and other similar maladies, they should also check www.nzda.org.nz and on the right hand site under “News”, scroll down to “11 June 08-Amalgam Update” for a lot more illumination and information.

The simple message is: do not be misled, do not be exploited, do not be manipulated both physically and emotionally, and do not be deceived. Always consult your dental professional for the best advice. Raymond Abel is an

Long Bay Baptist has become the church family for many South

African immigrants who have made the East Coast Bays their home. We have been blessed by the contribution that they make to our Faith Community. Our Youth Pastor, and our Children’s and Family Pastor are both South Africans, along with many of our leaders and active participants. In total there are about 110 involved in our church.

The statement that we have chosen to sum up what we seek to be is: “A family with open arms” The image of the church in the bible that is the most important one to us is ‘family’. We try to be a group of people who love and support each other, and who encourage involvement by those of all ages and backgrounds. Although we obviously hold strongly to the central Christian truths, on less important issues there is no sense that people always have to agree with me as the Pastor, or with each other. We encourage diversity, and respect for those with different viewpoints.

Our services cater for different groups who want worship that is meaningful to them. The 9am service is quieter than the others and many of those who attend are in the older age bracket. Our 10.30am service is for all ages and we seek to make it lively, relevant and enjoyable for all. At 5pm a younger music band leads the worship and a larger proportion attending are young people and young adults. The message is the same at all three services.

The church seeks to serve the community and provides a kindergarten; ‘Mainly Music’ (a fun movement to music program for pre-schoolers); an exercise class for older ladies, along with lively children’s’ and youth programs. The ‘Bays Housing

Trust’ associated with the church provides housing for those who are suffering with Mental Health difficulties, and a food bank helps those in the community struggling financially. Like many other churches we run ‘Alpha’ courses twice a year. This is a video series that teaches the basics of the Christian faith in a non-threatening and friendly environment.

We also make a major contribution to financing and staffing a Christian Prayer Centre in Browns Bay, which provides a place for people to either pray personally, or to receive prayer from others who care.

A coffee morning for new ‘arrivals’ in our area is held weekly in Torbay, and helps newcomers to find

out about our community, and to make new friends.

I have been the Senior Pastor at Long Bay for nearly 18 years and am very grateful for the wonderful people God has given us who allow us to create that sense of ‘family’ and to make an impact in our community. I seek to be a Pastor who loves his people, and to preach messages that are relevant and life-giving. SUCCESFUL IMMIGRANT BUSINESSMEN IN NZ

The move to New Zealand was for the most obvious of reasons, mostly the economic and political pressure that has made life so unbearable in Zimbabwe.

The move here was made after Lanny very wisely came for a “look and see” first and then he

decided to move the family out to the North Shore of Auckland.

Life as an immigrant family was as unsettling and complicated as it gets, but Lanny started his own business in Glenfield after working for a couple of years for various workshops, including Centreline Suspension, and also at the Vehicle Testing Station in Kingsland. When at the VTNZ, Lanny worked as a WOF inspector for cars, trailers, motor bikes and taxis (COF).

Lanny and Romana’s early life in New Zealand got off to a good start because on arrival they joined the Baptist Church in Northcote and the Pastor and congregation really rallied around to welcome, help and support the

new family. People offered pieces of furniture and household items and the friendly people in this church also extended their help by giving Lanny their cars to service on the weekend.

Lanny has been in the automotive industry since 1988. He worked for a number of companies after doing his 4-year apprenticeship in Zimbabwe, where he was the best student. He worked for reputable companies including Puzzey & Payne (Peugeot & tractors), Mike Apple (engine reconditioning), Derek’s bike Centre, Airworks (British company contracted to the Zim Air Force) as well as Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority.

Lanny is a fully trained and qualified motor mechanic. He was the best student at college and got his qualifications as a motor mechanic including diesel-tractor mechanics. He was also the first person in Zimbabwe to be trade-tested in motorcycles. This trade-test is a qualification which shows full competencies and was issued to Lanny by the Dept. of Manpower in 1994. Lanny was also voted and awarded the Zimbabwe Mechanic of the Year in 1996.

In Zimbabwe, Lanny showed his entrepreneurial ways by going to the Ruwa Country club and the Harare Golf Club and secured a contract to repair their motorcycles and lawnmowers. Whist at the club, Lanny met numerous farmers and they used to invite Lanny to their farms to fix their cars and motorcycles on site.

The Rolch Automotive opened its doors in 2006 is ably run by Lanny and wife Romana and has one other full-time mechanic, John-Mark and a part time clerical assistant who helps in the office.

Lanny runs his business with simple principles and believes that to be successful, he must strive to provide his customers with exceptional service based on customer demands, satisfaction and long terms relationship based on trust.

“A home away from home”

Ian and Elize Hutchinson had been thinking about emigrating

from their home in George, South Africa for a couple of years before they finally made the move to New Zealand last November.

Having come from a church background in South Africa, finding a new church for themselves and their four-year-old twins Liam and Jolie was a priority to them. Just a few days after settling on the North Shore in Auckland, their carpet cleaner told them about City Impact Church and handed them a card with the church’s details on it.

Arriving at City Impact Church for the first time, their immediate impression was, “Wow.” The size and scope of the facility and the number of people blew them away.

“The music was amazing, and the

children had such a good time in Children’s Church that Sunday,” remembers Elize. “We decided that we should at least go back a few times to see what we thought.”

Soon, Ian and Elize received an invitation in the mail to City Impact’s Introduction night. Held on a Wednesday night every eight weeks, ‘Intro night’ is a great chance for newcomers to get an overview of the history and values of the church, and also to meet the pastors and sample the superb coffee and cake.

From Introduction night, newcomers are invited to come along to Wednesday night church for Gateway, a course specifically designed to develop people’s walk with God and help them feel at home at City Impact Church.

“We have grown in our faith so much as a result of Gateway,” say Ian and Elize.

Jaco and Mari Grobler immigrated to Auckland’s North Shore from Pretoria in 2002 with their young children Stefan, 5, and Ina-Mari, 3. They started attending City Impact Church and now, seven years later, they are pastors with a desire to reach out to others from South Africa.

One of the things that really attracted them to City Impact Church was the fact that their children were so well catered for. Not having any other family in New Zealand meant they were extra grateful for the community that the church provided for them and the kids. Mari started attending Music Box with Ina-Mari, a music and movement class for toddlers that runs on a Wednesday morning. Ina-Mari, now 10, has also been a member of the church’s dance academy and both children attend City Impact Church School.

“What we love about the school is that each child’s potential is recognised and developed. They are treated as individuals. Our kids are so confident. We are excited to see what the future holds for them.”

Pastors Jaco and Mari say they have also grown personally over their time at City Impact Church.

City Impact’s small groups are structured around teams that serve in different areas of the church. On a Sunday, for example, almost everything, from the café team, to the lighting, sound and AV crews, is run by volunteers. These volunteers meet mid week in ‘small groups’ for fellowship, Bible study and training.

“City Impact Church has a larger number of South Africans than any other church in New Zealand,” laughs Jaco. “What we love about being here is that we can connect with others from South Africa, but we can also make kiwi friends and integrate into New Zealand culture.”

If you were watching “Enemies of the State” or, more recently “Snakes on a Plane,” you would be listening to the music of our own South African composer, musician and producer, Trevor Rabin.

He has written the musical scores of more than two dozen Hollywood movies that have become box office hits around the world.

He was born In Johannesburg, South Africa in 1954 from a family of classical musicians; where his father, Godfrey was lead violinist for the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra. He took formal piano training at an early age but he discovered the guitar at age 12. He loved the music of his age and despite his formal training in Tchaikovsky and Brahms he always fell back to the influences of current bands like Cliff Richard and the Shadows,

the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix.He formed music bands in the early seventies known as ‘The

Conglomeration” and ‘Freedom’s Children” which became banned by the current government of SA because of the political rhetoric that was evident in their songs.

In 1974 Trevor formed the band “Rabbitt” along with Neil Cloud (drums), Ronnie Robot (bass), and Duncan Faure (vocals & keyboard) and their collaboration became an overnight hit with the release of their first album “Boys will be Boys.”

This album included a remarkable re-work of the Jethro Tull song “Locomotive Breath’ and Rabin’s self-penned “Charlie,” a song with a

haunting melody that raced to the top of the SA charts within days of its release and subsequent airplay.

When Rabbitt exploded onto the SA music scene they were considered as SA’s answer to the Beatles. Everywhere they went they were mobbed by screaming fans. Although Rabin fronted the group, he was often overshadowed by the good looks and charm of Duncan Faure, who was the “pretty boy” of the group. The fans screamed “Duncan! Duncan!” whenever they appeared on stage and young girls fainted when he reached out to them. I watched them performing live in the late seventies and will never forget the electrifying performance. When they played “Locomotive Breath” at the end of the show, they brought the house down.

Rabbitt produced a second album in 1977 called “A Croak and a Grunt in the Night.” which went gold virtually overnight. Rabin co-produced the album and won a SARI award for his work. The “SARI” (South African Record Industry) award is the equivalent of the US “Grammy.”

Unfortunately the band could not tour internationally because of apartheid so Trevor left SA and moved to London in 1978. The remaining members of Rabbitt released an album without Rabin but the album failed to chart and they disbanded the same year.

Trevor went on to record two solo albums in London, but they failed to chart. However, in 1981 Trevor produced an album called “Wolf,” co-produced with Ray Davies of the Kinks and with collaborations by ex-SA Manfred Mann, former Cream bassist Jack Bruce and session drummer Simon Phillips. The album achieved mild success.

In 1982 Trevor decided to move to Los Angeles where he did session work. He bumped into Chris Squire and drummer Alan White, long time band members of Yes that had disbanded the year before. They began collaborating under the name “Cinema.”

Trevor’s career took an upward swing when he started jamming with Squire and White and his creative genius came to the fore. He wrote the songs “Owner of a Lonely Heart” and “Leave it” during this period and most of the material for an album known as 90125.

However they still lacked a vocalist and after Jon Anderson, original vocalist for Yes heard Rabin’s songs, he joined the band and dropped “Cinema” for “Yes.” They released 90125 to much public acclaim and overjoyed Yes fans who celebrated the re-birth of the band. 90125 went on to sell 6 million copies, the most successful Yes album ever, with “Owner of a Lonely Heart” rocketing to #1 on the US charts, the only Yes song every

to do so. The album earned the band a Grammy in 1984 and immediately Yes began a world tour together with Rabin. The sad part of this great success was that very few of Yes’s international fan base would openly acknowledge that Rabin was the brains behind the album. Many pop journalists ignore Rabin and most do not give him credit for composing “Owner.”

The next two albums by Yes “Big Generator” and “Talk” featured some brilliant creative work between Rabin and Anderson. These two releases charted very well and were followed by another world tour in 1994 with the group line-up as Anderson, Rabin, Squire, Wakeman, Howe and Bruford.

After the tour Trevor tired of the internal politicking amongst the group and left to start a new and challenging career in soundtrack composing. He composes the scores for Con Air, Armageddon, Deep Blue Sea, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Remember the Titans, The 6th Day, Bad Boys2, Glory Road, Snakes on a Plane and Book of Secrets amongst many others. Besides receiving many Grammy nominations and one Grammy win, Trevor has also received eight BMI film score awards. The theme from Remember the Titans was played following United States President Elect Barack Obama’s speech

upon winning the 2008 Presidential Election and was used as a backdrop for the ensuing celebrations.

Trevor lives in Los Angeles with his wife Shelley of twenty years. He is now a US citizen, and they have a son, Ryan who has taken up a career as a rock drummer for the LA group The Outline, signed to Fearless Records. A chip off the old block!

As part of his quest to find the safest way out of the current recession, our intrepid editor attended a

seminar recently that offered a host of new solutions from accountants, economists, insolvency professionals and other so-called experts on the way forward.

Most of the presenters were very bullish about the future and the economist showed us lovely diagrams and bar charts of interest rates, the increase in the number of immigrants, new housing consents, the state of the residential market etc., but no one really got to grips with the question of: “How do we survive another two years of this current downturn and, if it does carry on, is there a possibility that it will stretch to 3 or even, at worst, 4 years.”

The media have done surveys and it has shown that business confidence has increased since last year and some are saying that we are out of the worst and can expect a slow but positive increase over the next two years. I hope it does not last that long because if it does, we will see a lot of small business casualties popping up over the foreseeable future. Fortunately, our population is on a steady increase and if immigration laws limit the influx of ‘new Kiwis’ to those who are adequately qualified, and who can communicate effectively in our home language, English, we can foresee an economically safe passage through the recession.

I have listened to the experts and these are some of the ideas that have been put on the table to survive in 2009:-

1) Do not fire key staff but retain them, and, as a cost saving venture, cut other non essential expenses. If necessary restructure salary agreements that separate administrative-type salaries from those based on production. When the market turns it will be difficult to find highly skilled staff. Some businesses are actually employing staff that have been made redundant, to prepare them for the upturn. These people are usually so grateful to get a new job that they put in a real effort to prove to their new employers what they can do and by so doing they improve productivity.

2) Return to basics and focus on core competencies. Send staff to training courses in order to increase their skills. Get more out of your staff by creating closer teams to increase productivity and by including them in some of the decision making. Re- write job descriptions. Let some of the staff take leave and encourage back up staff to learn those positions.

3) Cut your debt by chasing your debtors. This is one of the most important ideas that came out of these discussions and it applies to every business. You are in effect lending your customers money to support their business. If you do not operate on a cash basis get your money in sooner. Get the staff or senior people in your organisation to phone your debtors and get the money in. If you used to operate on 60 days bring that in to 30 days and so on. If someone is late with a payment explain to them how important their business is to them, but if they do not pay you may have to close your doors.

4) Do a leaseback and sell your property to an investor. This concept is for all those businesses that bought their own properties when times were good. This is a great idea when you need cash flow to survive and your bank is not interested in your problems. Why not sell your building and use the cash flow in your business and when things get better you can always buy another property?

The Afrikaans Club of New Zealand launches cancer fund

Her husband Phillip has a work permit and is currently working on a dairy farm in Ngatea. Their Permanent Residency Permit now hangs in the balance because of Lesley-Ann’s health condition.

She needs urgent radiotherapy and hormone treatment that will ultimately cost in excess of $20 000. The family do not have the means to meet these costs.

Having an entrepreneurial tendency, Mary at various times in South Africa had her own businesses, first an

import mail order business and later on two passive exercise franchises “Inch by Inch”.

However times were changing in South Africa and having decided that New Zealand seemed like a really great place to raise their three daughters, they emigrated in 1995, their oldest daughter going into Year 9 at Long Bay College (Form 3 as it was then). They have never looked back.

New Zealand has been very good to them and their daughters have done really well, both at Long Bay and at university. The oldest two, Leanne and Dominique, went to Otago, Leanne doing medicine, like her dad, and Dominique becoming an accountant like her mum. In fact she has just got her CA qualification. Their youngest daughter, Shannon, is still at UNI. She first spent two years at Auckland but this year has also spread her wings and moved to Otago.

Both oldest daughters are now also married – to good Kiwi blokes – and each has a baby boy. The first one is 11 months old and the second one was born just after Easter. Another chapter in their lives is starting.

For many years as the girls were growing up, the whole family was involved in basketball. In fact, that is how Mary and Lance met at UCT. They played and refereed, but now their involvement is limited to the occasional Breakers game.

More recently they have taken up snowboarding, starting off as regular visitors to Snow Planet and they try to get down to the mountain at least once a year. They also enjoy sailing their keeler out on the Hauraki Gulf. However, having recently returned from a holiday in the Whitsundays where they chartered a catamaran, they are now definite converts.

Self motivation plays a huge part in Mary’s life and she can often be found reading motivational books or listening to self-improvement CDs such as John Kehoe (Mind Power), SMI (Dynamics of Personal Motivation) and Anthony Robbins (Get the Edge).

then entered the world of Chartered Accountancy firms and before doing her professional exams she had to do a couple of extra papers and then the law and tax conversion papers. In 2004 she became a New Zealand Chartered Accountant.

Over the years she has seen first hand the problems that many individuals and small business owners face on a day to day basis and is very keen to do whatever she can to help. She has gained a wide range of experience over various industries and businesses of differing sizes.

Koeksisters

SOUTH AFRICAN RECIPE REVUEWe present our third tantalizing article in this series of South African based recipes and their stories that will definitely remind you of the old country!:

THE DUTCH SETTLERS OF THE CAPE learnt an amazing recipe for a sweet dessert from the Malay slaves that

they brought from Indonesia in the 17th Century. It resembled a “braided cake” doused in a syrupy mix and was dubbed “koeksister” derived from the Dutch word koekje, the diminutive of koek meaning “cake.” The Afrikaners adapted the Malay version of this delicacy from a spicier, softer, coconut covered braided cake to something that is much more crispy and syrupy; best served cold. It is prepared by deep frying dough in oil, then dipping the fried dough into cold, sugary syrup.

The koeksister syrup:· 4 cups sugar· 1 cup water· 1 tsp cream of tartar· ½ tsp tartaric acid· 1 tsp vanilla essence or 1 tsp grated orange rind or 1 tsp ground cinnamon or 1/3 tsp ground ginger

Add the dry ingredients to the water and bring the mixture to the boil. Allow it to simmer for 10 minutes or until syrupy. Set the syrup aside to cool. It is advisable to make the syrup first and to leave it in the fridge

overnight.

The koeksister dough:· 1 egg · 2 cups flour· 6 tbsp milk· 6 tbsp margarine or butter· 2 tsp baking powder· 1 tsp salt

Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a mixing bowl.

Cut or rub the margarine or butter into the dry ingredients. Beat an egg thoroughly and add it to the milk. Add this to the flour mixture, taking care to handle as little as possible.

Refrigerate the dough for at least one hour.Roll out the dough to a thickness of ¼ inch.Cut into strips that are approximately 31/2 inches long and 1 inch wide.Cut each strip into three lengthways, leaving one side uncut, and plait the pieces, pressing the cut ends together firmly.

Pre-heat vegetable oil in a deep pan and remove half of the syrup from the fridge.

Deep-fry the koeksisters in the oil until golden brown. Drain them for a few seconds on absorbent paper.

Dip the koeksisters into the cold syrup, for a few seconds, whilst they are still hot. This will seal the syrup outside and leave the inside of the koeksister dry in contrast.

The syrup will gradually become hot, so when you have done about half of the koeksisters take the remaining syrup from the fridge and use this for the balance of the koeksisters.

Coming full circle

“If its concepts and words to express those concepts.. that’s my thing!” says Carlene du Toit, who has decided

to return to her first love, copy-writing, whilst continuing to pursue her other business interests.

Following a successful career writing for Johannesburg’s largest advertising agencies such as Sonnenberg Murphy Leo-Burnett, Lintass FCB, and Hedley Byrne, she launched her own studio to produce print ads, radio/TV commercials, pamphlets, brochures, flyers, newsletters, press releases, posters etc for a variety of businesses that could not afford the services of the large corporates.

And then came the “Groot Trek” and the trauma of coming to a new country that offered safety and security. Since arriving in Auckland she has written for newspapers such as the North Shore Times (Experience Supplement), Business to Business, NZ Herald, the Howick Pakuranga Times and magazines such as NZ Business, Franchise New Zealand, Marketing New Zealand and NZ Retail.

It had taken her several years in the old country to find fellow ‘creatives’ such as designers, photographers, printers etc. who ‘were a match made in heaven’ and therefore able to complement and enhance her own particular skill - so losing her business associates was almost as traumatic as leaving her country. After all, advertising is a team effort and everyone has to be dancing to the same tune in order to deliver a message that is intelligent, persuasive and visually stunning enough to make an impact.

New visa requirements for SA passport holders

South African passport holders traveling to the United Kingdom will be required to obtain a visa in order to be allowed into the country. This step comes after South Africa failed to pass the UK’s strict new Visa Waiver test. Other countries that will also face strict new visa checks are Bolivia, Lesotho, Swaziland and Venezuela. The Mercer 2009 Quality of Living survey conducted to help governments and major companies place employees on international assignments, ranked Auckland as fourth best out of 215 cities worldwide, behind Vienna (Austria), Geneva and Zurich (both Switzerland). Auckland tied with Vancouver, Canada.

The major criteria used by Mercer are cities with the best infrastructure based on electricity supply, water availability, telephone and mail services, public transport provision, traffic congestion and the range of international flights from local airports.
