Lettergram from Francis C. spataro:

GATHERING THE LIGHT - Right on the Mark!

Gathering The Light:A Psychology of Meditation. By V. WalterOdajnyk. A C.G. Jung Foundation Book. Shambhala Pub. 1993242 pp. $14.00 [ Available at Quest Book Shops].

This is an excellent summation of the entire topic ofmeditation, Eastern and Western, as well as an introductionto the writings of C.G. Jung on meditation, spirituality andalchemy. The author is a Jungian analyst, trained in Zurich, with a 20 year private practice in NYc. He is also author of"Jung .and Politics";it is a must for all spiritual directors

After reading" Gathering The Light," one i ediatelyyearns to run off to a library to search out Jung's workscited in the text, footnotes and bibliography:The Psychologyof Eastern Meditation, Psychology and Alchemy, psychology andReligion and Mysterium Coniunctionis.

On discussing the book with the author over lunch atLippizzaner restaurant in Manhattan, Dr. Odajnyk informed methat he was working on a sequel and suggested I read Jung1sdissertation, " Psychology and the Occult." Dr. Odajnyk hasdedicated a life ti e to the study of the Ancient Wisdom andhosts a Daskalos study and healing circle at his midtownoffice. Daskalos is a spiritual sibling of Gurdjieff.

"Gathering the Light" is the best explanatory text onwhat happens during meditation, which I have read during 45years of studying spirituality and Eastern religions. I veryhighly recommend it to our readers throughout the country, not solely because the author is an old friend , but si plybecause it strikes at the heart of the subject. Like a Zenarcher the author concentrates on the ark and never misseshis shots; pastoral counselors will find the book especiallyuseful. Dr.Odajnyk has given workshops at Blanton-Peale Institute of Pastoral Studies and teaches at C. G. Jung Found.

Quotes From the TextII aile does not become enlightened by imag1n1ng figuresof light, but by making the darkness conscious. 1I

THE ORTHODOX CATHOLIC CHURCH OF N. & S. Americaby Bishop Roman

St. Jude's Shrine, 594 Fifth St. NE, Barberton,Ohio 44203

(+ In Memoriam the M. Rev. Joseph M. Nevi110yd OFH,4/94)Our independent orthodox jurisdiction is one of the few

continuations of the American orthodox experiment conceivedat the turn of the century by our beloved mentor, V1adikaJoseph Rene Vi1atte, ' with the approval of the Russian Orthodox Archbishop of San Francisco. The main thrust of the experiment was to have all church services conducted in English.Although, due to the Russian Revolution, this experiment didnot succeed in the Mother Church, faithful remnants of thisoriginal American Orthodoxy continued to exist in isolation.

The Russian Orthodox Archbishop of San Francisco at thetime, Vladika Tikhon Bel1avin, approved of the plan. It was

. so structured as to allow for diversity and continuity without any interruption. The use of . the vernacular would be thedetermining factor when establishing parishes and monasticcOlIlJ1lunities. The plan also called for the establishment ofan American Orthodox Missionary Diocese with its own bishop.

A Faithful Remnant of this American Orthodox cOlIlJ1lunitywas still to be found in New York State and New England inthe 1960's. Hieromonk Joseph A1isauskas was consecrated asbishop in 1968 by Archbishop W.H. Francis nrotbers , 1887-1979.Fr. Joseph founded the Monastery of the Theotokos in NJIConnecticut as well as three parishes in New England~ Clergywere ordained to serve these communites incorporated as theOrthodox Catholic Diocese of Connecticut. The apostolicBishop Joseph explored every opportunity to expand his youngdiocese. He was a true Fisher of men rather than just a keeper of the aquarium and the status quo.

In the 1970's the cOlIlJ1lunity established Holy ApostlesMission in Cleveland, Ohio, under a dynamic young pastor, Fr.Roman Bernard who soon expanded his mission to otherlocations · in the Mid West and Ohio. On April 30, 1978 theailing Bishop Joseph consecrated Fr. Roman as his successor. Two years later in August ,1980, Bishop Joseph fell asleepin the Lord. American Orthodoxy lost a true shepherd 1

Since its inception the Orthodox Catholic Church of N.«S. America has had parishes ·and missions of the Western Riteand is truly a Western orthodox Catholic Church. We are veryproud to say tha t ours is one of a few Orthodox Churchesto have the Western Ri te stand on an equal tooting wi th theByzantine Rite. This is guaranteed by the Church's Constitution and Bylaws. In fact presently the Roman Li turgy , the1928 Book of COlIlJ1lon Prayer, the Ambrosian and Ga11ican riteshave been approved for use as well as a Sarum Rite.

The Church has foreign missions in Central America inaddition to its parishes in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana,N. Y.and the South West. Its National ' Hdqs. is at the Shrine ofst. Jude wi th its famous Weeping Icon of Our Lady of ' HolyProtection. Inquiries are invited by sincere Truth seekers.
