In the summer of 2010, Rutland’s streets, parks and open spaces will be taken over by some unusual visitors…a ‘Bloat of Hippos’ is heading your way! The unveiling of the fi breglass hippos will take place at the start of the Oakham Festival on Friday 18th June 2010 and will be displayed across the County for three months, with the possibility of the Hippos being brought out again next year, after a period of hibernation over the winter months!The project is funded by The Arts Council and developed locally by Arts for Rutland, the Oakham Festival and Rutland County Council in partnership with Wild in Art. In addition the Rutland primary and secondary schools will all be creating their own Hippo artwork and applying it to slightly smaller 60cm high fi breglass Hippo sculptures. These Hippos will be painted by each of the schools and will be on display for the period of the Oakham Festival (18th June - 4th July) before returning

As a podiatrist (chiropodist) this is my busiest time of year, when we start to think about exposing our feet in sandals and realising they’re not looking their best!Cracked heels are one of the most common foot problems I see in the summer. Cracked heels (fi ssures) can be due to wearing sandals, especially mules or fl ip fl ops, these shoes ‘slap’ the heel which may cause the skin to thicken. Sandals expose the thick skin to the elements, drying it out, this combined with the stress of walking results in cracks. Think about a tomato, when you squash it, it wants to expand, eventually splitting. This is what happens to the heels as body weight pushes down and shoes push up, if the skin is dry and not supple it splits. Dry skin may also be a sign of omega oil defi ciency. Cracked heels can be very deep and painful.The best treatment for cracked heels is prevention;

fi le hard skin regularly with a foot fi le or pumice stone, moisturise feet daily, ensure your diet contains plenty of essential omega oils and wear sandals with a strap around the heel (avoiding backless shoes). If you’re suffering from painful cracked heels, a podiatrist could help. A podiatrist treats cracked heels by removing the thickened hard skin; if the thick skin isn’t removed the cracks won’t heal. Occasionally, deep cracks can be treated with a skin glue, to stick the skin together so it can heal. If you’re unsure about how to get your feet looking and feeling their best this summer, consult your local Podiatrist (Chiropodist).

Is your pension invested in the right place?


Whether you are a keen pension saver or fi nd the whole subject of retirement planning boring and confusing - read on; it could well be in your best interests!Most people fi nd their pension investments baffl ing. But, in the most simple terms, pensions offer savers a choice of investment funds in which to grow their money, including safe ‘cautious’ funds (mainly invested in sensible bonds, from well established companies looking to raise money), to ‘balanced’ funds, which will include those sensible bonds again, but also equities (shares) in a wide variey of companies, fi xed interest (similar to savings accounts that you might have anyway) and property. Another alternative, when in your 20s or 30s perhaps, and have plenty of time to ride out a downturn in markets is to opt for a more volatile ‘growth’ fund which could have a high proportion (maybe even 100%) of the fund in equities, some of which could be in riskier ‘emerging’ markets, such as the Far East. However, given that most savers know little or nothing about investments, most fi nd themselves in a balanced managed fund holding something like 50% equities, 30% bonds and 20% property and cash without even knowing if its in their best interests or not. Those coming up for retirement now who didn’t review their pensions 10 years ago could still be losing out because their funds might not be most appropriate (after all, the FTSE100 has never regained its all-time high of 6,930 on the last trading day of 1999). An estimated 2% of contributors to pension schemes only ever swap funds and most pension companies operate balanced managed funds on this basis, assuming people won’t ever switch. But if you want to maximise the value of your pension fund at retirement (and who wouldn’t?) you should consider taking bigger risks when you are young, moving to a balanced fund in your forties and fi fties and possibly a predominantly

bond fund in the last fi ve to 10 years before retirement. OAKHAM FESTIVAL is bringing you an exciting programme for 2010, opening on 18th June and running through to 4th July. Venues

across the county host an eclectic mixture of performances including the Mayday Players bringing two nights of hilarious improvised comedy. The fi rst night invites audience members to cut out newspaper articles just minutes before curtain time, inspiring ‘Tonight’s Top Story’; improvisation without tricks, gimmicks or games, just a live, onstage comic exploration. It is the world only hinted at by your local paper, but fi nally revealed by the comedic X-ray vision of The Maydays. Rutland Concert Band are back by popular demand following their sell out performance of music from the shows, fi lm and well-known classical themes.

The festival fi nishes on the 4th July, with some events having an American theme. A Community Choir has formed especially for the Festival,

currently busy rehearsing music from ‘Guys & Dolls’. The Grainstore Brewery has a feast of American music planned over the middle weekend and an organ recital based on music by Charles Ives, Samuel Barber and Philip Glass features at All Saints Church.The fi nal weekend will take place at a Marquee in the Castle Grounds, sponsored by ‘Marquees by Stuart’ with a party night with local bands and a celebration of local young artists in Rutland’s Got Talent. Leicester Big Band will embrace the American theme, with vocals by Rutland’s answer to Frank Sinatra. Bring your picnics and enjoy the party atmosphere.

Oakham Festival 2010 promises to be exciting


Rutland Water Nature Reserve (RWNR) was created during the 1970’s, a result of the then newly created Rutland Water. Run in par tnership with Anglian Water and the Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust, the reserve has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame and is now regarded as one of the finest Nature Reserves in Western Europe.The reserve occupies a narrow strip of land running for nine miles around the Western end of Rutland Water and covers 600 acres. A reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Special Protection Area (SPA) and Ramsar site, designated by The Convention on Wetlands as of international impor tance especially as a waterfowl habitat.Over 250 species of birds have been recorded and on a good spring day, it is possible to see over 100 species of bird, with rarities such as Red Kites a distinct possibility. Over the winter months in excess of 20,000 wild fowl can be found including 10% of the Nor th Western European Gadwall population. Summer sees the Osprey’s return to Rutland Water Nature Reserve, a site where in 2001, these magnificent fish eating hawks bred for the first time in England for over 150 years!The success of this reserve is due to wide diversity of habitats that range from ancient woodlands that are carpeted by Blue Bells in the spring, to meadows, streams, shallow water lagoons and reed beds which provide food for the various types of water fowl.

These huge variations in habitat not only suppor t a massive diversity of birds, but also provide homes for some the UK’s most elusive and rare animals. Every thing from Otters and Stoats, through to Great Crested Newts and Grass Snakes make their homes here. From an ecological standpoint Rutland Water Nature Reserve truly is a goldmine.

Something for everyone

Perhaps the most significant offering that RWNR has is that all this beauty, tranquillity and natural splendour can be enjoyed by anyone. Access to the 27 bird hides and miles of nature trails will cost you a mere £4 for the day from visitor centres, either Egleton or Lyndon. Both have educational interpretation rooms that are open to the public and sell a range of natural history books, gifts wild bird food and an assor tment of snacks and drinks to refuel with after your walk. For people with limited mobility there is the oppor tunity to use a buggy (prior booking essential) and the majority of the hides have wheelchair access. With friendly, knowledgeable staff and volunteers on hand even a novice will be able identify what they have seen.

Its all about the Kids

RWNR provides an extensive education programme that caters for children of all ages from primary school to sixth form and beyond. The education centre at RWNR runs a number of holiday activities. Popular days include Nature Detectives, Explorer Days, and Family Fun Days. For as little as £25 a day children get the chance to go bug hunting, pond dipping and make nest boxes along with a whole host of fun activities. All days are led by experienced teacher naturalists and the emphasis is very much on having as much fun as possible!

On the 20, 21 & 22 August RWNR will again host the British Bird Watching Fair, the largest event of its kind in the world. Attracting over 20,000 visitors a year Bird Fair raises money for conservation projects in all par ts of the world.

In the heart of Uppingham, Age Concern has a high street presence with a shop and café. The shop takes donations of good quality clothes, shoes, bags, books and bric-a-brac. The Rutland Branch of the R.N.L.I. will have Archery, Rifle Range, Croquet, Boules and Horseshoes available for ALL the family to take part in. There will be experts on hand to show the use of bows and rifles and there will be all sizes of equipment to suit all ages. Costs will be minimal £3.00 for archery and Rifle Range and £1.00 for the others.There will also be a BBQ Lunch available, so a great day out. The Rutland Branch of the R.N.L.I. holds various fund-raising events and sends off about £10,000 each year to help keep lifeguards and lifeboatmen kitted all round our coasts. At least 22 lives are saved every day in Britain. July and August are two of the busiest months as families have trips to the seaside. The R.N.L.I. is committed to increasing the number of lifeguards around Britain so funds are urgently required.

Six members of Rutland Running Club are embarking on a mammoth challenge this month. As well as their usual running commitments, Sian Cheverton, Maria Grundy, Fleur Ketley, Allan Grey, Steve Griffi ths and Paul Rogerson will attempt to walk Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Trans Pennine route in eight and a half days – from 20 to 30 miles each day.Steve Griffi ths has laid down the challenge, after being advised not to run after knee surgery in 2009. So a walk of 190 miles seemed like the perfect answer!Raising money for Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance, the team are looking for support via www.justgiving.com/RutlandRC-C2C.The air ambulance service covers the communities of Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland, covering a population in excess of 1.4 million plus over 1 million motorists who pass through the area everyday. Located at the Volunteer Centre off Lands End Way in Oakham, and established for 30 years, Voluntary Action Rutland (VAR) offers a range of services and facilities for the Rutland Community.A number of charities and voluntary organisations are based at the Centre where rooms are also available for hire to businesses and community groups for meetings, training and conferences.VAR also supports individuals and groups and promotes local voluntary action by providing advice, information, training and consultation. Its services include volunteering opportunites, a transport scheme for frail elderly, disabled and vulnerable people, representation of the Voluntary sector on local networks, and a community development offi cer and a mentoring scheme funded by the Big Lottery and CapacityBuilders respectively.The transport scheme relies on volunteer drivers and VAR is currently looking for more volunteers for this crucial role either to drive their own car or one of the Centres

minibuses. A mileage allowance is paid to cover out of pocket expenses for own car use. A typical volunteer journey would be to collect a client from their home address, and transport them to a Doctors appointment (local) or a Hospital appointment (Leicester). Drivers wait until the clients appointment has been completed and then return them back home. EVERY LITTLE boy goes through a stage of liking cars and some, like me, simply don’t grow out of it.

Much of my car addiction could be down to growing up in Norwich, only a few miles from the Lotus HQ in Hethel where THE Bond car of the seventies – the Lotus Esprit S1 was made. The nearest I ever got to seeing my ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ dream car was on a sponsored cycle ride around the Lotus test track for the cubs. That seemed enough for me at the time, and I soaked up the atmosphere of that windswept former airfi eld as though I was somehow connected to Roger Moore and his 1977 Bond car with its ‘underwater’ gadgetry. I was still giddy from excitement a few years later when the new Turbo Esprit featured in the 1981 fi lm, ‘For Your Eyes Only’. Yes, looking back, that is defi nitely where my addiction to cars came from. So, you can imagine my reaction when, after months of pestering from me, Lotus rang to see if I’d like to test drive their new Evora 2+2 model. And guess what? The model I was being offered was in white – just like the dream car I’d fi rst clapped eyes on at the Norwich Odeon in 1977. To say I was

excited would be an understatement. I was off to Norfolk in a fl ash.After being shown around the Lotus factory and witnessing Evoras being skilfully and lovingly put together by local people rather than robots, I was more than itching to get behind the wheel of my 59 plate demo model. I was hooked from the moment I set eyes upon it. Once inside the Lotus Evora 2+2 you soon realise that the world’s only mid-engined four-seater

is just as dramatic as its gratifyingly styled exterior. The front leather seats are very comfortable, and touch sensitive switchgear abound. You’d struggle to get all but the tiniest baby seats to fi t the miniscule rear seats, but, fair play to Lotus, the rear bench is a useful storage area and is trimmed in black leather as standard, which gives the illusion that the car is only a two-seater. The

boot is even decent enough to fi t in two sets of golf clubs. Brilliant!The fi rst thing I noticed about the Evora is how well it rides. The 3.5-litre V6 lump is tame in town,

but it’s hard to mask the rich throaty burble of the power waiting to be unleashed. Hit the open roads and the Toyota-sourced powerplant simply pins you in your seat. The 5.1-second 0-62mph time blows you away, yet the Lotus still feels cool, calm and collected. The car’s brakes took me by surprise – they scrub off speed in a blink of an eye and yet the Evora is totally stable under heavy braking and the mid-engined layout gives the car terrifi c traction. As well as the ability to turn heads and its sheer driving pleasure the Evora’s combined cycle fuel economy fi gure of 32.5mpg is also something to be admired. In a day driving from Norwich via Lincolnshire to Northamptonshire I got about 28 mpg - not bad considering I played about a little on the 100 mile journey home. The Norfolk based company has done an amazing job on this car. It’s utterly exciting to drive, it draws looks wherever it goes, it feels safe and it is an extraordinarily competent all-rounder. All in all Group Lotus fulfi lled my boyhood dreams by letting me drive this beautiful work of ar t. It’s something I won’t forget for a long time and nor will anyone else who gets behind the wheel of the stunning new Evora.

The history of the carnival parade and fun day was first organised in 1970 by the Girl Guides to raise funds for a new guiding headquarters and was at that time known as The Guides Carnival. At a later stage a Committee was formed to carry on as the Carnival Parade and Fun Day as we know it today.Groups wanting to enter this year’s Oakham Carnival Street Parade had better star t brushing up their local history because this year’s theme is Historical Events in Rutland. Our ancient County has a lot of history to choose from, such as knights of the realm presenting horseshoes to the Castle. There are lots of ideas on the internet too.The parade star ts from Catmose Vale College at 1.30pm and will head for Melton Road Crossing and straight down the High Street, onto Ashwell Road, turning into Station Road then into Church Street, then the fun really star ts at Cutts Close, where the parade of floats, the musicians and walking groups will gather for even more entertainment to include Traders’ Stalls, Children’s Amusements, Side Shows and Dancing. There will be refreshments available and we have ordered the sunshine. The music of Abba is well loved by a wide range of people from the young to the not-so-young and the amazing success of the film version of ‘Mamma Mia’ had people singing along to their string of hits all over again in cinemas throughout the country. Since it is highly unlikely that the original group will ever reform (can you imagine what price they could command if they did?), the next best thing is to go to see one of the tribute bands that specialise in performing their music.One of the best of these is the wittily titled Bjorn Again, who perform in the park at Burghley House, Stamford, on the evening of Saturday, June 12. Bjorn Again were originally formed in Australia back in 1988 and have played the music – with a touch of humour - of Abba to thousands of fans with more than 3,700 shows in 55 countries to their credit. The suppor t act on June 12 is Cheryl Baker, who many will remember for her work with Bucks Fizz and their ‘80s smash ‘Making Your Mind Up’.The combination of the music of Abba and the delightful setting of Burghley makes for a lovely family summer night out. from the flamboyant Roxy Music with their suave frontman Bryan Ferry. I caught the original line up with Brian Eno early in their career at a Crystal Palace Garden Par ty and by the time I saw them again at Birmingham, they had taken their sophisticated take on rock

right round the world. More recently I saw Brian Ferry at one of the picnic concer ts held in the grounds of Belvoir Castle, near Grantham, another lovely setting for a summer night.Roxy Magic is the longest-running tribute to Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry and the group make an appearance at Bourne Corn

Exchange on Saturday, July 3 at 8.30pm. The real band were well known for their brilliant musicianship and playing, so this tribute band have a lot to live up to, while their singer, Keith Hackett, emulates the look and sound of the smooth Mr Ferry. Just Desserts usually come to those who deserve them, for better or for worse……….but this summer everyone in Rutland, locals & visitors alike, can get their Just Desserts whether they deserve them or not, and feel no guilt.Many Rutland hotels, restaurants and pubs have signed up to run a charity promotion for the duration of the Oakham Festival & Uppingham Fringe, June 18th until July 4th. The event, organised by The Lions Club of Rutland, will enable the Lions to continue to support local charities and deserving causes.At all participating hotels, restaurants and pubs, anyone choosing the “Just Dessert” from the dessert menu will generate a £1 donation for local charities. To the average Joe Blogs, year eleven conjures up images of looming GSCE exams, heavy revision (supposedly) and difficult decisions about the future, however, I know from experience that Prom paranoia will be prominent in the minds of all you girls across Rutland. On the surface, you may seem calm and collected, but I am not fooled, as I know for a fact that under this masquerade there is a one-track mind of prom, prom, and prom! You have all earned it through the blood sweat and tears of your GCSE’s so it is only fair to have a spectacular evening in celebration, but how do you make the most of your prom experience? Well that is where I come in.First things first, pick your dress. Now, it may seem like there are too many to choose from, but believe me when I say, you know, you really know! It may seem a bit of a cliché but all of my friends and I agreed that we knew what the dress was the moment we zipped, buttoned or laced it up. Whether you want to go classic with a long, silky, sexy number, or whether you want to funk it up a bit with a shorter, brighter dress, you need to feel confident in what you are wearing. In addition, to all those mums and dads desperately clutching their purses and wallets for dear life, I’m afraid you need to see these dresses as an investment… if that makes you feel any better.When picking your dress think about how you can reflect who you are and maintain your individuality whilst still dressing up to the nines. A shorter dress

was my perfect choice as I felt free to dance and move around with ease, and when the temperature began to rise in the clustered hall, I wasn’t gasping for air under frilly layers of satin and lace.Arriving at prom is a spectacular occasion full of horse drawn carriages, beastly hummers and classic limousines. The paparazzi, otherwise known as family and friends, are always out in full force. The best way to make your entrance affordable but still make a statement is to share your ride with a group of friends and split the cost between you, meaning your parents do not have to take out a second mortgage.Also, remember that, sadly, all good things must end, so it is important to consider how and where you will continue the party when the clock strikes 12.

So, a few pointers to make the most of your prom:
