From the Editors
This, the second last edition for 2013, is packed
with most of the usual goodies. An excellent place
to start is with the very next article where
President Greg has come up with an interesting
report which provides plenty of food for thought.
There are reports on our last half dozen events and
Captain Ron has outlined activities planned for the
rest of the year. Another good read is Adrienne’s
contribution to the ‘My Car’ column this month.
You can also test your motoring knowledge with a
little quiz provided by Alan Stibbs.
Remember this year’s Hub Rally? March wasn’t
it? Well the good news is that my Morris Oxford is
back on the road after a complete engine rebuild
following the rally. The even better news; if you
shut your eyes you could be forgiven for thinking
you were riding in a Rolls Royce! At least that’s
the way it seems compared to its pre-rebuild
performance. My sincere thanks (and quite a bit of
dosh) go to Auto Surplus of Mitcham Victoria,
HM Gem Engines of Currajong and Fosters Ace
Auto Repairs of Aitkenvale. TVVHM member
Bob Thompson’s Bayswater Road Radiators also
provided top quality service. The Oxford now
boasts a temperature gauge!
A quick reminder to anyone intending to
participate in next year’s Hub Rally; bookings for
accommodation are filling up fast. Look for a
image on page 8 for information on
booking accommodation.

……………………
From the President
Seeing as I have missed the last two Hub
Committee meetings, I feel a little bit less than
qualified to talk about the progress the committee
has made in my absence. Unfortunately for my
ego, I have to say that it appears that the Hub
Committee has got on just fine without me.
Matters are progressing well and all the problems I
could foresee have already been foreseen and have
been handled in a timely and appropriate manner.
Next year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Hub
Rally but it also marks the first rally of the
Queensland Historic Motor Council to be held in
North Queensland. These two events will be
happening simultaneously at Charters Towers next
Easter. The Council has been running a State Rally
in the metropolitan area of the State for several
years. I believe that the Rally has never been
further north than Bundaberg, so Townsville is a
significant departure from past practice. Other
changes to past practice seem to be that the
Q.H.M.C. intend to have two Rallies in the State
next year, one in Charters Towers in April, and
another in the south east corner in June.
Furthermore it would appear that they are
4
anticipating that this arrangement will continue
into 2015 and perhaps beyond. If this is the long
range intention of the Q.H.M.C. and the proposal
is embraced by the affiliated clubs in North
Queensland then this will significantly raise the
profile of this organisation not only in this region
but throughout the State.
Does this matter or do we really need a higher
profile? In answer to this, I would draw attention
to the recreational fishing fraternity. Their “I fish
and I vote” campaign led to much public money
being expended to upgrade infrastructure such as
boat trailer parking areas and boat ramps.
It is not like as though our organisation or others
like us could not stand a little bit of sympathetic
treatment from the powers that be. We only have
to look at the vexed question of “S” plate
registration, to realise that there are issues that
could be resolved if we received understanding
and favourable treatment. In other countries it is
appreciated that a person who restores and
maintains an old car is not only participating in an
activity they enjoy, but they are carrying out a
public service in that they are preserving
something the society at large can participate in.
The large number of requests we receive from
schools and councils etc. bear witness to this
community involvement. In some cases
registration costs are waived entirely and in other
cases the provisions of “S” plate registration are
far more flexible and fair than those we currently
have. A stronger and more united Q.H.M.C. would
be able to put our case more forcefully than it is
currently able to.
On the negative side, the response of local
government to the closure of the local drag strip
shows how little influence local motoring
organisations have. One could imagine the uproar
from the boating community if it was revealed that
one of their major local ramps was to be closed
down for unit development and the replacement
was to be located at Alva Beach in the distant
future when money became available. While our
motoring interests differ from drag cars and hot
rods, I don’t think we have any more public clout
than they do.
I hope that next year’s rally is a success not only
from the point of view of it being the 40th Hub
Rally which is a significant milestone, but also it
may become an annual demonstration of the unity
and strength of historical motoring organisations in
north Queensland.

Club Captain’s Report
The Club has had a busy couple of months. See
below for reports on the Afternoon Tea at Kevin
and Robyn Warren's home at Rangewood, the
Extravaganza de Engine at Bluewater Park, the
Club Run and Weekend in Ayr, the Rowes Bay
RSL Art and Craft Display, Kristine’s Ladies
Morning Tea, and the Jag Club Mystery Run.
There has not been any interest shown in going to
Giru for their 60th anniversary show on 14th
September. This is not surprising as the following
weekend, on 22nd September, we have the
combined run with the Jaguar and Mini Clubs for
lunch at the Giru Hotel. Other events leading up to
the end of the year are the Saunders Beach Brunch,
the Heads and Tails Run and the Christmas Lights
Tour. See the Club Program on the back page for
further details.
STOP PRESS: The Christmas Party will be on
30th November at Tom's Tavern.

Reports on Club Runs (photos pages 12-15)
Memorial Afternoon Tea: 21 July
This was hosted once again by the Warren family
at their magnificent Rangewood property. Sixteen
families attended, arriving in style in a convoy of
Club cars ranging in age from Norm’s 1917 Model
T to Kristine’s 1953 Morris Minor, plus a couple
of moderns. There was ample parking around the
beautifully kept green grounds. (Kevin, you must
have a gigantic water bill or a very deep well.)
It wasn’t long before those present got down to the
main business of the day—devouring the
scrumptious afternoon tea. This was prepared and
served by Kevin and Robyn, ably assisted by
daughters Frances and Claire. Celia would have
5
been proud and I’m sure it brought back some
wonderful memories for Alan, who had come out
with Mal in Mal’s Riley.
Entertainment was provided by the local
livestock— Tessie the mini pig, Bud the pony,
Heidi and Bindi the dogs and Lucy & Gurtie the
geese.
For those who were unable to attend, or those who
would like to recapture some of the epicurean
delights of the afternoon, the Warrens have sent in
the following recipe.
Marina Tart
Pastry
4ozs Butter, 1 cup sugar, 2 eggs, 3 cups self
raising flour.
Beat butter & sugar until cream, add eggs
(one at a time), then add flour.
Bake at 180 degrees
Filling
1 tin condensed milk, 2 egg yolks, juice of 2
lemons.
Beat ingredients together.
Beat egg whites until stiff, fold into mixture,
pour into egg shell.
Bake for about 3 to 5 mins so not sticky.
Extravaganza de Engine: 11 August
Bluewater Park.
The event was a big improvement on the one at
Toolakea last year. It was a much larger display
and a new committee running it. There were a few
clubs not represented but still a good display of
vehicles and a very good crowd attended.
Club Members in attendance were:
Derek Walker Mini
Kristine & Kathy Morris Minor
Rod & Lorraine Chev
Roger & Wendy Austin Ute
Ron & Heather Riley
Jenny Modern
Club Run & Weekend in Ayr: 17-18 August
A compact group of thirteen cars gathered in Ayr
for the annual Burdekin District Run. From
Townsville there were six cars including Jan and
Norm Morley, 1917 Ford Model T; Pam and
Dennis Smith, 1910 Hupmobile Model 10;
Adrienne and Frank Cerutti, 1909 Maxwell Model
LD; Heather and Ron Anderson, 1949 Riley;
Beverley and Bill Bunt, 1956 Austin Sheerline;
Helen and Derek Hadgraft, 1959 Volkswagen.
Burdekin members provided seven cars: Jan and
Tom Callow, 1915 Ford Model T; Chris and Les
Wassmuth, 1917 Ford Model T; Fay and Dave
Martin, 1908 REO Model B; Margaret and Brian
Paine, 1930 Ford Model A; Jan and Peter Toomey,
1925 Austin 7; Gary Crowdey, 1935 Packard;
Lisa, Rob and Sarah Diguglielmo, 1964 XP Ford
Falcon utility.
This year the Tour started from the regular
location at Plantation Creek park for the drive to
the farming community of Clare. Here we had
smoko under the trees and a chat with Heather’s
relations, Jan and Bruce from Beenleigh, to whom
the veteran car tour was an eye-opener. Then we
were off to Brandon, where the Burdekin District
Machinery Preservationists have their historic
precinct.
We all enjoyed lunch under some more trees
where we were joined by members Fiona and Ross
Northwood and Sylvia and Ross Chapman before
being guided through the exhibits in the precinct.
We were shown the tractor shed and were
enthralled by the veteran Marshall tractor. The
tractor is a 1910 Marshall Colonial, two cylinder,
single speed machine made by Marshall of
Peterborough in the UK. The Marshall was the
first mechanised farm appliance in the Burdekin
and was instrumental in the commencement of
modern agriculture in this part of the world. The
Marshall Colonial is under restoration by members
of the Burdekin Machinery Preservationists.
After the tractor shed we marvelled at the
machinist workshop with shaft and flat belt power
to lathes and mills, the blacksmith shop with forge
and steam hammer and the engine display which
featured three horizontal, single cylinder diesel
engines made by Fielding and Hornsby. After the
visit to the precinct we took a leisurely drive back
to Plantation Creek via Pioneer Mill, one of the
sugar cane milling factories in the district. We
covered 110km for the day.
The Andersons and the Bunts left for home after
lunch. That night we gathered at Chris and Les
6
Wassmuth’s home for a barbecue and more car
talk.
We had a sleep in on Sunday morning and
gathered at Coutts Centennial Park on Beach Road
for a 9:30am departure. We spent Sunday morning
at the town of Alva, at Lynch’s beach. The
secondary purpose of this activity (the primary
purpose being the drive), was to finish off the left-
over deserts from Saturday night and coffee. A
walk on the beach was a highlight of the morning.
This type of run is very enjoyable for the veterans,
where the car can be driven at its most comfortable
speed, on good roads, with few traffic controls and
little traffic. This is why the veteran guys and girls
look forward to this annual event.
….Frank Cerutti
Rowes Bay RSL Art & Craft Display: 17 August
When the RSL Rowes Bay Retirement Community
got to hear that we had displayed our cars at the
Pallarenda Aged Care Garden Settlement fete, the
call went out—we want your old cars too!
Responding to the call were: Roger and Wendy in
their 1948 Austin A40 Devon ute, Warren in his
1957 Daimler Century Mk II Sedan, Derek in his
1967 Morris Mini Cooper, Kristine in her 1953
Morris Minor, Richard and Helga in their 1934
Armstrong Siddeley Tourer and Bill and Jean in
their 1949 Morris Z ute. Providing moral support
(but also there to lend a hand with the eating) were
Kathy and her daughter and Mal and Jenny in their
brand spanking new modern. As it happened, this
line-up wasn’t at all dissimilar from the cars that
had attended Pallarenda.
If there had been a prize for the best displayed
vehicle (which there wasn’t) Richard and Helga
would have won hands down. Not only was their
Armstrong Siddeley decorated with flags, buffalo
horns, shark’s jaws and a butterfly collection, they
had also set up an old wind-up gramophone which
was playing 78s such as Waltzing Matilda and the
like. This proved a big hit, not only with the
residents, but with certain Club members as well
During the morning, a number of members took
the opportunity to hop in the RSL bus for a guided
tour of the grounds, which included a preview of
the kind of accommodation we might like to move
into sometime soon. It wasn’t half bad, and being
situated between the Rowes Bay foreshore and
Town Common wilderness, it’s not at all an
unattractive proposition, BUT, you’re ‘gonna’
have to rent a shed somewhere to store your pride
and joy—single car accommodation only I’m
afraid.
All in all, an enjoyable morning.
Ladies Morning Tea
Theme “Shoes”
Wednesday 21st August eleven ladies
met at Mocha Mecca Riverside for
morning tea. With Shoes as the
theme there were pretty shoes, very
decorative shoes and shoes to match
the ladies personality. Cheese cake,
scones, savoury bread and coffee was
enjoyed.
Marilyn was sitting on the lucky chair
and Wendy won the lucky door prize.

Jag Club Mystery Run: 25 August
The Minis and Jags rolled out in force this year,
determined not to be outnumbered by the
TVVHMC. They succeeded. A moderate turnout
of Club cars consisted of Roger and Wendy’s 1948
Austin A40 ute, Kristine’s 1954 Morris Minor
(with Kathy as navigator), Bill and Bev’s 1950
Riley RMB and Bill and Jean’s 1951 Morris
Oxford. Derek was also there in his 1967 Mini
Cooper S, but judging by his livery was
participating as a member of the Mini Club to
which he also belongs.
Boosting our numbers in their moderns however
were Mal and Jenny, and Chris (who turned up in
his latest acquisition—yet another Renault, a very
modern [relatively speaking] and very yellow
Megane convertible). There was only one entry
from the Marque Club, a handsome light blue
MGB.
In previous years the Mini Club has devised the
questions for this event. This year it was the Jag
Club’s turn and Jan Fels came up with the goodies.
After two or so hours of twists and turns we had all
wended (wandered?) our way from the back of the
Fairfield Shopping Centre to the bbq facilities at
Rossiter park on the banks of Ross River. All, that
is, except for the Bunts, who arrived sometime
later in their immaculate Riley. It was only when
the winner was announced that the reason for their
tardiness became clear—they had been busy
getting all the answers right. Congratulations to
Bill and Bev.
Not too far behind the Bunts was Chris, whose
effort was all the more commendable, considering
he was both driver and navigator. Chris was also
able to pass on this piece of gossip, overheard on
the day.
There was a conversation at the bbq lunch following the Mystery Run. Roger ‘somebody’ announced his plans to blow up a 9kg (empty) gas bottle by putting a torch to it. This ex-sapper had obviously forgotten the time when as a ‘young fella’, he accidentally sent a 44 gallon drum sky high within metres of the Kirwan Police Station.
Kristine and Kathy had an unsettling moment
when, on pulling into a private driveway to
execute a U-turn (a not uncommon experience of
participants) the roller door before them opened
automatically as if to entice them into who knows
what? The Bat Cave? They got outa there pronto.
Many thanks for this event must go to Reg and Jan
Fels for the organising and especially Ray
Zapparoli, also from the Jag Club, who did the
cooking.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
CONGRATULATIONS TVV&HMC choir had two gigs this month
singing Happy Birthday to George Sellen and
Bill Honniball. George was surprised when the
choir burst into song in the car park after the
August meeting and Bill was caught off guard
in the park on the Jag and Mini run. ……………………
My Car – 1927 Swift Roadster
I became involved with vintage cars in Frank’s
company in 1974. We attended meetings of the
Townsville Veteran and Vintage Motor Club,
which, in those days were held at the Education
Centre in Wickham Street and went on runs
together in his Chev. I soon decided I wanted my
own car so set about finding one. On 26/07/75 an
advertisement appeared in Melbourne Age for a
1928 Swift original coupe for $1,100 or best offer.
As the car was unseen and e-mail photos were not
even a concept, I asked some associates who had
contacts in Melbourne to inspect the car for me.
Maybe they saw a different car, because the car on
which they reported was different from the car that
arrived. The advert went on to say it was fitted
with 4 speed gear box, had good body work, 3 of
the tyres were new and had a green fabric body
over black guards. The only accurate portions were
the 4 speed box and the colours. The car arrived on
the Melbourne Trader on Sunday 10/08/75. I chose
not to proceed against the vendor because of the
logistics of distance and the car did look cute
despite its rugged appearance.
Frank commenced restoration with a complete
rebuild of the timber body. Club member at that
8
time, Evan West contributed his wood working
skills for which we remain forever grateful. The
body was re-sheeted in new steel because of the
condition of the body. The green vinyl body
covering was over a thin layer of cotton waste
which proved to be an excellent accumulator of
moisture. The main body timbers were completely
rotted out as was the bottom 200mm of the body
panels. The roadster lid and mechanism were also
missing and the hole was merely sheeted over with
the vinyl. The car was able to participate in the
1978 Townsville Pacific Festival on a permit.
1st outing - 1978 Pacific Festival
Our move to Mount Isa in March 1983 with three
children under 3 for Frank’s work put the
restoration on hold.
Restoration recommenced in January 2005 after
the days of commitment to children’s schooling
and sport had ended. By then, Frank had finished
the restoration of his 1916 60hp N type Dennis fire
engine.
The car was completely mechanically restored as
was the body. The ornate timber trim was
undertaken by Sergies Lucas. Four mudguards
were hand made by Dave Price. The body was
painted by Dave Price and the upholstery
completed by Brian Kohn. The car was registered
on Wednesday 16/03/2011. As a side story, the
main concerns for the Queensland Transport
Registration Officer were verifying the car was in
fact a Swift, that it was made in 1927 and that
there was not a body description of Roadster in
their pick list of descriptions. Neither is there the
colour Mulberry. So the car is officially a
convertible, coloured brown! They’re happy! The
Swift now bears the registration number RLB468.
A Right Little Beauty
The car appeared at its first major event at the
Townsville Hub Rally in April 2011. It won “Best
Vehicle Display” at the Jaguar Club All British
Day in June 2011.
Best display with Dennis fire engine stable mate
2011 All British Day
We also took it to Atherton for the 2012 Cairns
Hub Rally. With it we regularly appear at local
club runs.
It is a very pretty car with plenty of jewellery
including a typical British vintage dashboard
complete with speedometer/odometer/trip meter,
ammeter, oil pressure gauge, and 8 day clock. It
drives very well although its climbing ability has
not been great, but performance is getting better. I
am so glad we saw the potential in the car given its
condition at purchase because it has turned into a
right little beauty.

Alan’s Surprise
While delving through some old papers, Alan
stumbled across some photos of his sister’s
1970 wedding. Do you recognise the
handsome young driver in the foreground of
this photo?
If you said, “Norm Morley”, you win the
prize. Well done Alan, for digging up this
gem; and well done Norm, for your dedication
to our wonderful old cars over so many years.

From other discussions:- No matter how correct,
unless you are prepared for delays do not take your
vehicle for registration without an appropriate
chassis number. Your dating officer should be able
to tell possible locations and also give an idea of
what numbers you might be looking for.
If you are having difficulties with registrations

Say that again??
This is a story about Everybody, Somebody,
Anybody and Nobody. There was a job to be done
and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do
it. Anybody could have done it but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was
Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody
could do it but Nobody realised that Everybody
wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed
Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could
have done.
