THE DESTINATIONS

From soaring mountains to enchanting lochs, country estates to historic battlegrounds and fine whisky distilleries, Scotland’s heritage, wildlife and landscapes make it the perfect destination.

Glamis CastleThe childhood home of the Queen Mother and birthplace of Princess Margaret, Glamis Castle has been a royal residence since 1732. Renowned as one of the most haunted castles in Britain, the home of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne also has a wealth of sumptuously furnished rooms, including the Dining Room and Great Hall, and the beautiful private Chapel. The Italian Garden, begun in the early 1900s, is another delight as well as a nature trail where sightings of red squirrels, herons and roe deer are quite common.

BallindalloCh Castle Known as the “Pearl of the North”, Ballindalloch Castle is in the heart of Speyside and close to many whisky distilleries. Home to the Macpherson-Grant family since 1546, it has a fine collection of 17th-century Spanish paintings and a striking walled garden. Set in magnificent grounds between the Spey and Avon rivers, the estate consists of laid-out formal gardens and woodland and offers sporting activities and a picturesque and challenging nine-hole parkland golf course. The estate’s very own Ballindalloch cattle are the oldest Aberdeen Angus herd in the world.

edzell CastleWith its red standstone tower and striking walled Renaissance garden, created by the Lindsay family in 1604, Edzell Castle is enchanting. Its famous guests included Mary, Queen of Scots, and her son, James VI. The garden boasts a highly decorated, uniquely designed wall with diagonally arranged compartments for flower boxes and spaces for birds to nest. Debts forced the Lindsays to sell Edzell Castle in 1715 and it eventually passed into the hands of the Dalhousie family, who still own it today. The castle’s tranquil setting hides a turbulent past while the gardens continue to delight visitors.

the CairnGorms The superb Rothiemurchus Estate is located in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, offering a unique blend of stunning landscapes, wonderful wildlife and exciting outdoor pursuits. Set in breathtaking surroundings, you can enjoy many different activities. With mountains, pine-clad slopes and a wide river valley, the Cairngorms offer a distinctive Highland setting. There are also extensive marshlands and lochs, whose best-known visitor in summer is the osprey, which tends to be sighted around the Boat of Garten area.

EDINBURGHWith a clutch of Michelin-starred restaurants and stylish, five-star boutique hotels, Edinburgh is a must for the discerning traveller. Famous for its annual International Festival in August, the Scottish capital’s impressive recent renaissance includes the reopening of two major cultural attractions: the refurbished National Museum of Scotland, and the expanded Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The Royal Yacht Britannia has been berthed in the city's historic port of Leith since being decommissioned, while the city is also home to the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood.

MoUNt StUaRtThis neo-Gothic country house with extensive gardens is located on the Isle of Bute. The architectural fantasy of the eccentric third Marquess of Bute, it is built to almost cathedral-like proportions. It features vaulted ceilings glittering with stars and astrological depictions, mythological statues and a dazzling Carrara marble chapel as well as arguably the finest privately held collection of family portraits in Scotland. The gardens offer a mix of exotic and rare plants, conifers and pools and a lovely, secluded stretch of coastline, which has picturesque views back towards the mainland.

GLENFINNaNThe small, beautiful village of Glenfinnan lies in a lovely valley and at the northern end of Loch Shiel where ancient pines mingle with oak trees. It’s famous for its spectacular railway viaduct, constructed as part of the West Highland Railway by Sir Robert McAlpine between 1897 and 1901. With its 21 mighty arches, it’s a stunning sight and has featured in several television series and films, most famously in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, in which the Hogwarts Express is seen steaming through the countryside.

KYLE oF LoCHaLSH Gateway to the Isle of Skye and the wonderful north-west coast, Kyle of Lochalsh is reached via what is arguably the most scenic route in Britain. The line passes Loch Luichart and the Torridon mountains, which are so old that they contain no fossils. The route then runs along the edge of the stunning Loch Carron through Attadale, Stromeferry and Duncraig to Plockton, where you can take a boat trip to see the colony of wild seals, before continuing on to Kyle itself, from where you can admire the mesmerising views over Loch Alsh to the Isle of Skye.

the ItInerAry4 Nights Day 1 Depart Edinburgh Waverley Station in the early afternoon and cross the magnificent Forth Railway Bridge. A delicious afternoon tea provides your first taste of the culinary delights to come as the train traverses the former Kingdom of Fife and continues up the east coast to Montrose and 16th-century Edzell Castle. Later, enjoy an aperitif in the Observation Car as the train travels up the east coast and turns inland towards the market town of Keith. Dinner is informal tonight and followed by local entertainment in the Observation Car.

Day 2 From Keith, the train travels west towards Inverness, capital of the Highlands, and on to Dingwall. Guests alight to visit Foulis Castle, seat of the clan Munro for 700 years. Return to the train for lunch as you travel towards Kyle of Lochalsh on this sublimely scenic line passing Loch Luichart and the Torridon Mountains. At the picturesque village of Plockton, you disembark to visit Attadale on the west coast. This huge, 30,000-acre estate has been home to the Macpherson family since the 1950s. Return to the train in Kyle of Lochalsh and relax before a formal dinner. After dinner, retire to the Observation Car for coffee and to enjoy music by accomplished local performers, while gazing across Loch Alsh to the mystical Isle of Skye.

Day 3 The train travels round the edge of the Beauly Firth to Inverness. Disembark to visit Ballindalloch, one of Scotland’s most romantic castles, with its wonderful gardens. Return to the train in the peaceful Highland village of Boat of Garten on the private Strathspey Railway. After an elegant dinner, let our Highlander entertain you with tales of colourful local heroes and Scottish life through the centuries.

Day 4 Visit the breathtakingly beautiful Rothiemurchus Estate beneath the Cairngorm Mountains. Here you can learn about the ancient Caledonian pine forests and the conservation of the estate or try your hand at clay pigeon shooting or fly fishing. You then proceed south, through the pretty Perthshire towns of Blair Atholl and Pitlochry, to Dunkeld, where you disembark to visit Ruthven House with its traditional Scottish gardens. The final visit during your Country Homes & Gardens Journey is a real gem for horticulturalists: Pitmuies Garden, near Forfar, boasts a walled potager, long borders of herbaceous perennials and old-fashioned roses.

Day 5 During breakfast, the train leaves Dundee and travels south over the Tay Bridge into the former Kingdom of Fife and on to Edinburgh Waverley Station.

the ItInerAry3 Nights Day 1 The Royal Scotsman departs Edinburgh Waverley Station in the early afternoon and heads west towards the gateway to the majestic West Highland Line. Enjoy an elegant dinner while the train speeds to Spean Bridge, then retire to the Observation Car for an evening of lively entertainment provided by local musicians.

Day 2 As the train travels west, keep your eyes peeled for the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. At Arisaig, disembark for a romantic walk along the silver sands of Morar. Back on board, lunch is served as the train retraces its route towards Fort William.
