PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Most of us enjoyed a good meal at the Vault and despite the ructions caused by the Light Rail construction the place seemed packed, perhaps because it was their first night of live comedy. A pity the Rotaractors did not join us as they had planned to. They probably would have stayed later. At the last board meeting the board approved a $4000.00 donation to the Polio Plus Fund as our Club’s contribution to R.I.’s EREY campaign. Some of you may have contributed in your own right but the President is normally coerced into making a commitment at PETS to donate $100.00 per member and we felt that it is appropriate to put that donation into the Polio Fund. This of course will give the Club credits towards PHF’s which will be awarded on the 7th May. In 2013, no Wild Polio Virus Type 3 cases have been reported. Over the past six months, only two cases due to this strain were reported worldwide (both in Nigeria, the most recent had onset of paralysis on 10 November). In Asia, no WPV3 cases have been reported since last April. These are the lowest levels of WPV3 transmission ever recorded. The Final Three - Pakistan - 5 Polio Cases recorded in 2013 compared to 14 on this date in 2012, with the most recent case reported on Feb. 12, 2013. Afghanistan - 1 Polio Case recorded in 2013 compared to 5 on this date in 2012, with the most recent case reported on Jan. 31, 2013. NIDs were held march 10 - 12 except in southern parts of the country where they were held on March 12, 2013 with more to follow in high risk southern areas in April. Nigeria - 5 Polio Cases recorded in 2013 compared to 10 on this date in 2012, with the most recent case reported on Feb. 13, 2013. Immunization Plus Days are planned for April & May. 2013 Polio Case Breakdown by Country (Green Numbers are 2012 Totals) Endemic Countries – 5 Pakistan (2012-58), 1 Afghanistan (2012-37), 5 Nigeria (2012-122) Importation Countries (2012 & 2013) – 0 Chad (2012-5), 0 Niger (2012-1) Happy Easter to everyone, I hope you all have a relaxing and peaceful long weekend. See you next week. No More G.S.E.

Aligning with Rotary International's commitment to fund sustainable humanitarian projects, the first Rotary-sponsored vocational training team (VTT) will travel to Conakry, Guinea to work in cooperation with Mercy Ships to train local hospital staff (9-23 March). The team, which is sponsored by a Rotary district in North Carolina, consists of five doctors, nurses and public health experts who will conduct trainings on best practices in disease/infection control protocols for the hospital's surgical suites, equipment sterilization, disinfection, and waste disposal. The team leader, Jenny Braswell, is a public health professional and a member of the Rotary Club of Clemmons, NC. Rotary, under its new Future Vision grants program, seeks to forge strategic partnerships with established organizations with expertise in any of Rotary's six areas of focus: peace and conflict prevention/resolution; disease prevention and treatment; water and sanitation; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; and economic and community development. The grants support major international projects with sustainable, high impact outcomes. "One of the main purposes of this trip and the partnership between Rotary and Mercy Ships is to enhance the skills of local health care professionals to improve delivery of vital health services to West African communities, a goal in line with Rotary's Future Vision," said Wilfrid J. Wilkinson, chair of The Rotary Foundation. "This partnership is an innovative approach to addressing critical humanitarian needs by leveraging the wide-ranging skills of Rotary's volunteers with the expertise of an international development partner such as Mercy Ships." From Pres Andrew ATTENDANCE 14 members, 3 Visiting Rotarians, 10 Partners, Total 27.

.Thoughts for the week

The couple had just finished dinner and the waiter was just pouring the third glass of port when the gentleman slid under the table. “Excuse me madam,” he said,” your husband is under the table.” “ No he’s not,” replied the white faced lady,” My husband just came through the door!” Thump and thump the old sauce bottle. First none ‘l come then the lott’l! Fred was the type of bloke who always let his friends pick up the dinner bill. He had an impediment in his reach. It was such a high class restaurant they could provide gravy to match your vest. There’s a salesman at the door with a young lady. Tell him I’ll take one! Which month has 28 days? They all have! Hollywood is the only place where brides keep the bouquets and throw away the grooms. Boxing is like marriage. The preliminaries are often better than the main event. A toast to the editor:- “ May he live to be as old as his jokes.”

A very happy Easter to all..
