A Message From Our Governor December 2013

Once again we find ourselves approaching theHoliday Season, that very special time of yearwhen we join with our family in sharingcenturies-old traditions such as trying to find aparking space at the mall. But the holidayseason reminds us to take time and enjoy ourloved ones while extending a warm smile andhelping hand to neighbors that are less fortunate. This is the time of theyear when people can follow their natural impulses and express their truesentiments with a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first.The joy that you give to others is the joy that comes back to you! In addition to normal activities of countless projects throughout the year,many clubs and districts organize special activities to help spread holidaycheer. From hosting food drives, to serving hot meals, to adopting families,to purchasing presents off a wish list, to wrapping presents, to ringingbells, to providing transportation to services, our Rotary family brightensthis season! With heartfelt gratitude for all your contributions toward improving ourcommunities near and far, happy holidays and best wishes for a healthy,happy, and successful new year.

District 5970 Global Scholar Chosen

by Harrison Cass, Scholarship Chair The interview session for the Global GrantsScholarship was held Saturday, December14 at 10:00 am at the Grout MuseumDistrict, 503 South St. in Waterloo. Onecandidate was interviewed - Mary McCoy, aCreighton University student from Waterloo. She was the only candidate tofile an application before the October 15 deadline. The interview lastedabout 45 minutes. After the interview, the interview team --- Bender, Moeller, Cass, andKueter unanimously agreed to recommend Mary McCoy to The RotaryFoundation for a Global Grants Scholarship. Mary has been accepted to the Masters program in International PublicHealth at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. The nextstep is for the scholarship committee to work with the District 5970foundation to put together a proposal to The Rotary Foundation. Thatprocess has already begun and should be completed over the next month.District Governor John Bender will be helping to line up a host club forMary in the Brisbane area by contacting the District Governor there. Mary plans to begin her studies at The University of Queensland in August2014. Her master's degree program should be completed in 18 months.

Club, a junior majoring in Nursing at Luther College in DecorahJake Rosenmeyer from Wesley, sponsored by the Algona Club, asophomore, majoring in History, Theology & Secondary Educationat Briar Cliff University in Sioux CitySunni Kegebein, from Hudson, sponsored by the Waterloo Club, asenior majoring in Marketing & Communications at Upper IowaUniversity in Waterloo.

All three students are successfully enrolled for the 2013 academic term attheir school. All three have submitted invoices for tuition and fees for theFall term. The treasurer of the Rotary District 5970 Foundation hasreceived a copy of the invoices and made payment directly to theinstitution of each scholarship winner. It is anticipated and has beencommunicated to scholarship winners that the balance of the scholarshipwill be paid when they submit invoices for their enrollment in the remainingterms for the 2013-2014 academic year. All three scholarship winners have been asked to visit their sponsoringRotary Clubs as soon as possible to meet the members and thank themfor their sponsorship. They have further been asked to work with thesponsoring club President in order to be placed on a club meeting agendaat least twice this year to give the club members an update on theiractivities, studies, and involvement in community service. Another update on District Grant Scholarships in the Spring of 2014.

District 5970 "ROTARY RUSH" is on again! by Michelle Bell The 2013-2014 focus of the District FoundationCommittee is to assist Rotarians to becomemultiple Paul Harris Fellows (PHF). For themonths of November and December, 2013, theDistrict is offering a significant incentive to allRotarians. Several generous Rotarians have offered their points to helpPaul Harris Fellows go to the next level. How does it work?A point is being offered for every dollar you invest up to $250. Theminimum commitment is $75. For example, you may have $500 alreadyinvested in being a PH Fellow. By giving an additional $250 duringNovember or December, the contribution will be matched by donor points,and you will become a repeat PHF. This match is only available to the first 200 Rotarians who submit theirrequests. Clubs: If you have a member who chooses to participate in this challenge,the Club will need to:

Foundation Giving It's important to note that every Rotarianshould realize whatever gift they can afford,no matter the dollar amount, is important. You can help do this by providing yourmembers with an idea of what things cost

in our Foundation world. Many members have no idea of how little it takesto change a life. A reasonable goal seems to be $100 per member peryear; but there may be some members who currently cannot do that. So... some type of gift is better than no gift; and giving of a gift will helpdevelop a culture of giving which will likely continue year after year, andwill encourage those donors to increase their contributions when they arebetter able to do it. Remember the encouraging words: Every Rotarian,Every Year.

End Polio Now Anniversary - February 23, 2014

We are this close, but we must finish the job! Recent polio cases confirmed in previously polio-freecountries is a glaring message that as long as polioexists anywhere in the world, every child remains atrisk. There are no country boundaries nor naturalbarriers that the polio virus cannot cross. We need torid the world of this virus that so negatively impacts thefuture for children. For less than one dollar, a child canbe vaccinated for life. But while we think about the outbreaks, it's important to remember there isstill progress being made. Polio cases in the endemic countries ofPakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria are down 40% compared with thesame time last year. Additionally Rotarians continue to do their part withfundraising, advocacy, and awareness activities which are intended tohighlight the progress and the challenges of the polio initiative. Help usraise the $7 million in DDF funding needed to fully utilize the World Fundmatch provided by the Foundation Trustees. And remember for everydollar spent by our Foundation on eradicating polio, the Gates Foundationwill match it with two dollars. Now is a good time to plan how your Clubsand District will celebrate Rotary's anniversary on February 23, 2014.

North Central President-Elect Training (NC PETS) President-Elect Training (PETS) March 6-8, 2014Rochester Minnesota The Multi-District PETS Alliance is a membership consortium of theleadership of the Multi-District Presidents-Elect Training Seminars. Theprimary objective of the Alliance is the sharing of information on successfulevent planning and implementation. Through the sharing of our successesand failures, each Multi-District PETS event has the opportunity to improvethe quality of training for Presidents-Elect-Rotary's future leaders.

United Airlines Charity Award Miles United Airlines is spreading its goodwillagain to charity organizations. The companywill provide 10 million award miles toparticipating nonprofit partners. Everynonprofit partner will receive at least 25,000miles, which can be used toward travel,transport, and other needs.
