This young woman is inspirational and a very sought after speaker. Holly spoke to the members about the progression of Rotary and the need for evolution and change. She gave examples of how technology has changed over the years and what happened to companies that did not embrace change and evolve, giving an example of what happened to Kodak who failed to embrace innovation. Holly in her interesting presentation showed a slide giving 50 reasons people give not to change for the better as change is always hard, she explained the “why” connection to change. Holly stated that Rotary has the greatest “why” there is to join and stated that most young people have a perception that Rotary is for older men. She spoke about new opportunities to improve and enhance member engagement and how these opportunities were played out in her club to engage younger members. Holly presented statistics showing that of the 1.2m members worldwide there were only 4% under 30 years and only 15% women. Holly quoted from the classic “To kill a mocking bird” where the main character Atticus Finch says “To understand is to walk in another’s shoes” Holly stated that she uses this principle to understand people especially the youth of today, Holly further stated that the word “Club” denotes a group of old men and stated that this word was dropped from her club logo on the website. She also stated that today everyone need to have a website and emphasised the importance of having one and updating same regularly. Holly reminded the members that there are over 600,000 voluntary organisations in Australia and as such we need to differentiate from the others to be a viable option for new members to want to join. She also stated that asking younger members co-operation in projects is more important than asking them to join as by involving them and tapping into their expertise we can ensure the best outcomes are achieved in our projects. Holly showed the members a slide of the members her club has and how their photos are shown on the club website, she stated that as there were several younger members in her club it was important she said to show this to the wider community especially the youth.

What a great Relay!

The Friday night fellowship was sensational with the weather being extremely kind to us. Thank-you

to those who brought a plate. Also thanks to the walkers, particularly those who walked in the early

hours of Saturday morning.

The Rotary Club of Essendon and Brumby Babes were on the other side of the track near the end of

the finish line. This enabled us to access power and be close to all facilities. The Relay for Life

committee erected a marquee for us, making it easy for us to prepare for the free breakfast that the

club organises each year. Thank-you to Roger Priestly, Peter Duras, Richard Lawrence, Stephan

Chandler, & Tim Anderson for their help at the breakfast.

There was a number of highlights this year including:

Over $158,000 raised for the event overall.

Approximately $7,000 by the RCE.

Roger Priestly awarded a Spirit of Moonee Valley Award for his great support of the event

since its inauguration 13 years ago.

A very big thank you to the following sponsors:

Seaga

Capital Radiology

O’Sullivan’s Sibeen Essendon – Irish Pub

Boundy Supa IGA – Essendon

Australian Unity – Niddrie

Precept Services

At Your Home “Will” Service

Digital Ink Technologies

Spineline Chiropractic & Massage

Note from Gayle Our Relay for Life Brumby’s Babes team raised just over $17,000 which was the 2nd highest team last Saturday at Aberfeldie Park. The event was very successful in spite of the heat and fewer teams this year. It was much better with the reduced hours – Friday from 7pm to Saturday 1 pm. Thankyou to all our supporter over the years who have attended any of our fundraisers. As you know cancer research and treatment is improving all the time and we are pleased to help in our small way each year. From Gaye Cariss
