When were the
Romans alive?
What was the Roman Empire?
About 1,800 years ago Rome was the centre
of a big empire. Roman soldiers had
conquered large parts of Europe and North
Africa.
The Roman army was skilled at fighting and defending the borders
from attack.
The brown parts show how far the Romans spread out over Europe.
Boudicca was the British Queen of Celtic ancient Britain.
She was married to Prasutagus, and with him she ruled over the Iceni tribe.
Boudicca’s people were called the Britons. They suffered because of heavy taxes and the invasion of the Romans.
Boudicca's warriors were very scary – they painted themselves with blue wode and had spiky hair.
Boudicca and her army of Britons fought a desperate battle with Romans.
It is said that Boudicca killed herself because
she couldn’t bear being
beaten by the Romans.
Where did the
Romans live?
The Roman Empire in 218 BC
Rome
The Roman Empire spread over the centuries as the Romans became more
powerful!
The Roman Empire in 100 BC
The Roman Empire 44 BC – when Julius Caesar died.
The Roman Empire 14 AD – when Augustus died.
The Roman Empire 116 AD – The Empire at its largest. After 116 AD
the Roman Empire slowly
began to decline as did their influence on the world.
All over the Empire the Romans lived in the cities, towns and villages they
built.
Bath: Aquae Sulis
Chester: Deva Victrix
London: Londinium
In all the lands they conquered, the Romans built towns that they could feel at home in.
Each town was built to a plan. The Romans liked everything to be organised and orderly.
The streets were laid out in a criss
cross pattern. Usually they
would have two main streets that divided the town. Smaller streets led off these at right angles.
How did the
Romans live?
The Roman Empire grew strong because it had a very good army to help conquer
and later control all the other lands.
The Roman soldier was a professional soldier. This means that he joined the army for 25
years and would be paid a salary.
A part of his wages was paid in salt, hence the saying 'being
worth your salt' -- (a good worker).
Where did
Roman soldiers
live?
One of the most famous things that the Romans built was the frontier
between England and Scotland, called Hadrian’s Wall, named after the
Emperor who ordered it built. It was started in 120 A.D. and took
nine years to build.
HADRIAN’s WALL
Mosaics have been found everywhere that they went.
Sometimes they were on the floor, sometimes on the walls.
Then there were the wall paintings ... frescos they
were called.
Romans loved to decorate their houses

What can you find out about the Romans
by the objects that they left
behind?
Romans had lots of different hobbies to keep them busy. They had games to play at
home, plays to go to see and public events for thousands of
people to see.
Gladiators were slaves or prisoners made to fight each other, or wild animals, in front of crowds. These fights were a part of events called "the games". They took place in huge open-air buildings called amphitheatres. At the end of a gladiator fight the emperor would often give a "thumbs up" or a "thumbs down" signal. This was to show whether he wanted the loser to live or to die.
