Before ShootingPull out the lens and turn it as far as it willgo towards the stop (1) until it engages. Now youcan shoot.The shutter release button (2) is locked as long asthe lens is not in shooting position. This handysafety measure stops you from wasting pictures bypremature exposure.

From Shot to ShotPress the release (2). Then fully pull out the windinglever (film transport) as far as it will go (3). So theRollei 35 is immediately ready to shoot again.

Double exposures, blank frames and overlappingframes are impossible.

After Each ShotTension again (4) to be ready for the next shot.

Loading the Camera

Inserting the FilmTurn down the lever (1).Unlock the back (2) and pull it off.Swing open the pressure plate (3).Push in the cartridge (4) and pull out the film untilboth perforated edges engage the sprocket teeth (5). Advancing the Film to Frame No. 1Pull out the lens (9) and turn it as far as itwill go to engage.Alternately release (10) and tension by pulling thelever to its stop (11) until after tensioning theexposure counter (12) indicates No. 1. Die Aufnahme

Beim Einstellen bedienen die Zeigcfinger dieSkalen am unteren Rand. Das Blendenrad ent-sperrt sick bei diesem Griff durch den Druck auf dieTaste.Samtliche Einstellwerte sind am Index (Dreieck)von oben her abzulesen.

Der Bildzahler zeigt die nachste Aufnahme an. Dergesperrte Spannhebel ist ein Zeichen dafur, daft dieKamera auslosebereit ist. Das Objektiv kann jetztdurch Druck auf den Knopf (7) entriegelt and nachdem Zuruckdrehen eingeschoben werden.

Zureinwandfreien Messung: Kamera genau auf dasAufnahmeobjekt richten, damit auch derBelichtungsmesser den Motivausschnitt richtigerfafit. ShootingSet the controls by pressing the index fingeragainst the lower edge of the setting wheels orrings. This also releases the aperture wheel bypressing on the ledge underneath. All settings areread off against the triangular index mark at thetop.

1. Set the DistanceTurn the lens mount by its lower edge (1) to set therequired distance to the index mark. See also Note®.The same scale underneath the lens rim carriesdistances in metres.

2. Pre-select the Exposure TimeTurn the shutter speed wheel (2) to engage theselected exposure time opposite the index mark.For instantaneous exposures see Note ®. For timeexposures see Note (3). The measuring range startswhere the meter needle becomes visible outsidethe red area.

3. Line up the Matching PointerFor reliable readings point the camera accuratelyat the subject, so that the exposure meter

takes in the correct field of view. For shots oil ofdoors with large sky areas point the carver, slightlydownwards rather than upwards. With thecamera held in this way: Turn the aperture wheel(3) to bring the red matching pointer (4) into linewith the exposure mete needle. If necessary selecta longer or shorter exposure time.The shutter speed and aperture arc now se forcorrect exposure. To check the settings you canlower the camera from its shooting positionFor pre-selecting apertures see Note Q7 .

4. ReleasingHold the eye behind the finder eyepiece, sigh thesubject in the brilliant frame and press theshutter release button (5).

To get the camera ready for the next shot pull thewinding lever (6) out as far as it will go with yourthumb. (See Note (D.) The exposure countershows the number of the next shot. If the windinglever is locked, this signifies that the camera isready for shooting Now you can release the lens bypressing the button (7), and turn and push it backinto the body.

03 Filmmerkscheibe einstellenDamit Sie jederzeit wissen, mit welcher Filmsortedie Rollei 35 geladen ist: Schwarze Scheibe an denKerben drehen and Index auf die benutzteFilmsorte stellen (Schwarz-weifl-Negativfilm,Color-Negativfilm, Color-Kunstlichtfilm, Color-Tageslichtfilm).

Unloading the Film

After the last picture (depending on the film lengthframe 36, 20 or 12) the film has to be rewound:Turn the lever (1) upwards.Unfold the crank (2) and turn in the direction ofthe arrow until the resistance of pulling the filmdisappears.Fold up the crank again and turn down the lever (1).

Unlock and remove the camera back, take out thecartridge and preferably repack it lighttight in itsoriginal packing. Get colour films processed as soonas possible.

Never change film in direct sunlight! Utilize, atleast, the shadow of your own body!

Practical Notes

• Film TransportYou can operate the transport lever either it oneswing or in two short swings until it locks -whichever you prefer.

• Is the Camera Loaded?If you are not sure after a long interval, unfoldthe rewind crank and try turning it gently in thedirection of the arrow. If you meet aresistance you know that there is a film it thecamera. If the camera is empty, the cranlk turnsfreely.

® Wahl der BelichtungszeitDie einrastendcn Ziffern 2 bis 500 derZeitskala bezeichnen Sekundenbruchteile.Zwischenwerte sind nicht benutzbar. Die Wahl derausreichend kurzen Belichtungszeit istmitbestimmend fur die Scharfe des Bildes.1. Forderung: Aus freier Hand kurz belichten, um

die Aufnahme nicht zu ,verwackeln". Hierfur ist 1/30 sec die statthafte langste Zeit. Sicherer andmeistbenutzt: 1/60 and 1/125 sec. 2. Forderung: Beibewegten Szenen um so kurzer belichten, jeschneller das Objekt sich bewegt, um „Bewegungsunscharfe" zu vermeiden. Als Anhalt:Sport 1/500, laufende Kinder 1/250, flottes Fu1gangertempo 1/125, Spazierganger 1/60 oder - auseiniger Entfernung - 1/30 sec. Denn allgemein giltdie Regel: Die Sicherheit der scharfenBewegungswiedergabe wachst mit zunehmendemAufnahmeabstand. Auf3erdem verringert sich dieGefahr der Bewegungsunscharfe, wenn das bewegteObjekt von vorn (statt von der Seite) fotografiertwird.

0 ZeitbelichtungDie Einstellung „B" am Zeitrad gilt fur Zeit-belichtungen von beliebiger Dauer. Der Ausloserwird fur die Dauer der Belichtung niederge-druckt. Erst beim Loslassen schlieflt sich derVerschlufl.Dutch Zeitbelichtung sind auch Aufnahmen beischwachem Licht moglich, bei dem der Belich-tungsmesser nicht mehr anspricht. Sonderfall:Ergibt sich die Stellung „B" durch Nachfuhren desBelichtungszeigers, so gilt in diesem Fall dieBelichtungszeit I sec (= Verdoppelung desvoraufgehenden Zeitwertes). Bei ]angerZeitbelichtung empfehlen sich ein Drahtausloser mitFeststellvorrichtung, feste Auflage der Kameraoder Stativbenutzung.

® ScharfentiefeAuch in einem gewissen Bereich vor and hinter dercingestellten Entfernung wird das Motiv inausreichenderBildscharfe wiedergegeben. Diese

Zone der „Scharfentiefe" ist auf der Entfer-nungsskala angezeigt:Suchen Sie beiderseits des Index die Marke derbenutzten Blende auf. Die daruberstehenden Werteder Entfernungsskala nennen den scharf erfaftenAufnahmcbcreich. Die Scharfentiefe ist besonderserwunscht bei uberraschenden Schnappschussen, beiszenen mit standig wechselnder Entfernungand bei tief gestaffelten Motiven. Auf der Entfer-nungsskala sind die gebrauchlichsten Schnapp-schuileinstellungen auf 2 m and 6 m rot mar-kiert. Schon bei mittleren Blenden (8 bis 11)erfassen Sic damit einen ausgedehnten Auf-nahmebereich:bei 2 m etwa von 1,5 m bis 3 m, bei 6m etwa von 3 m bis -.

® Selecting the Shutter SpeedThe figures 2 to 500 on the shutter speed scaleindicate fractions of a second. The speed ringengages at each setting; you cannot set inter-mediate values. Select a sufficiently fast shutterspeed for sharper pictures:Firstly, use fast speeds for hand-held shots to avoidcamera shake. Here 1/30 second is the longestpermissible time; 1/60 or 1/125 second is safer andmore frequently used.

Secondly, use faster shutter speeds for fastmoving subjects to avoid movement blur. Thussports shots need 1/500 second, running children 1/250, fast walking pedestrians 1/125, ambling people1/60 or - if farther away - 1/30 second.As a rule, the farther away the moving subject, thesharper it will appear. The risk of movement blur isalso reduced by shooting in the direction of themovement (rather than across it).

05 Time ExposuresThe B setting on the shutter speed wheel providestime exposures of any required length. Keep therelease button depressed for the required exposuretime. The shutter closes when you let go again.With time exposures you can also take shots

in very poor light which is too weak for an exposuremeter reading. As a special case, if you arrive at theB setting by lining up the

matching pointer, the correct exposure time 1second (double the next exposure setting). Forlong time exposures place the camera on firmsupport or a tripod and use a cable release withtime lock.

® Depth of FieldThe image of a subject is sufficiently sharp over arange of distances in front of and behind thefocused distance. This depth of field zone shownon the distance scale: Look up the index line ofthe aperture in us to each side of the focusingindex. The distant figures on the focusing scaleopposite these lines then indicate the sharplycovered subject range.Depth of field is particularly desirable for can didsnapshots, sports photography with rapidlychanging subject distances, and for scenes extending in depth. For this reason the most use fullsnapshot settings of 6 and 20 feet at markedin red on the distance scale. At a medium aperture(f/8 to f/11) these settings provide extendedfocusing ranges: at 6 feet from about 4'/s to 9feet; at 20 feet from about 10 feet to infinity «.

® BlendenvorwahlEs hangt vom Motiv ab, ob Sie den Belichtungs-zeiger mit dem Blendenrad oder mit demZeitrad nachfuhren.Bei bewegten Objekten wird die Zeit vor-gewahlt, urn sick die erforderliche kurze Be-lichtungszeit zu sichern. Nachgefuhrt wird mit derBlende.Hat dagegen die Scharfentiefe den Vorrang, wirddie erforderliche Blende ermittelt andvorgewahlt. Der Zeiger wird jetzt mit dem Zeitradnachgefuhrt. (Um nach Vorschrift cineneinrastenden Zeitwert zu erreichen, wird -falls erforderlich - das Nachfuhren mit demBlendenrad beendet.)in jedem Fall mull die Kamera beim Nachfuhren aufdas Aufnahmeobjekt gerichtet sein.

® Richtig belichtenGrundregel: Die Kamera mull beimBelichtungsmessen (1) genau inAufnahmerichtung (2) auf das Objekt zielen, demdie Messung gilt. Ein unabsichtliches Verkanten -etwa bei Landschaftsaufnahmen gegen den Himmel- kann das Meliergebnis verfalschen and in diesemFall zu Unterbelichtung fuhren.

Der Belichtungsmesser bewertet die durchschnitt-liche Gesamthelligkcit des anvisierten Objckt-feldes. Bei Motiven mit normalen Kontrasten gibter automatisch die richtige Belichtung an. Dochauch bei Aufnahmen mit starken Hellig-keitsgegensatzen lallt sich die Messung so durch-fuhren, dali die bildwichtigen Partien richtigbelichtet sind.

Normalfall: Das Objekt ist von vorn oderschrag von der Seite beleuchtet. Schwere Schattenfehlen. Hell and Dunkel sind im Gleichgewicht. (Diese gleichmallige Frontalausleuchtung liefertauch bei Farbaufnahmen die sattesten Farben.)Ergebnis: Die gemessene Belichtung stimmt furdas gesamte Bildfeld.

Sonderfall: Zwischen Hauptmotiv and Hinter-grund besteht ein starker einseitigcr Hellig-keitskontrast. Beispiel: Bei einem sonnenge-braunten Portrat vor leuchtenden Wolken wurdedie Gesamtmessung den Himmel uberbewerten.Belichtungswichtig ist jedoch der Kopf.

Abhilfe: Sie gehen jetzt zur Nahmessung mit derKamera dicht an das Objekt heran (3), his dasHauptmotiv den Sucher ausfullt. Nach Einstellender Belichtung kehren Sie zur Aufnahme an denfruheren Standpunkt (4) zuriick.

For distant views with near foregrounds set theinfinity marking c to the depth of field mark forthe aperture in use. That extends the depth of fieldto the nearest possible point in the foreground.

Pre-selecting AperturesAccording to the type of subject you can line up thematching pointer with the meter needle by turningeither the aperture wheel or the shutter speedwheel.With moving subjects pre-select the exposure timeto make sure of a suitably fast shutter speed. Thenmatch up the pointers by turning the aperturewheel.If on the other hand depth of field is moreimportant, determine the required aperture andpre-select this. Now match up the pointers byturning the shutter speed wheel. If necessarycomplete the exact matching with the aperturewheel. Selected speed have to be in click-stopposition.In every case the camera must point at thesubject while you line up the pointers.

® Correct ExposureAs a basic rule, always point the camera whiletaking exposure readings (1) exactly in thedirection of the subject (2). Inadvertent tilting ofthe camera - for example into the sky while takinglandscape views - can falsify the reading and inthis case lead to under-exposure.

The exposure meter evaluates the averagebrightness of the measured subject field. Withsubjects of average contrast it automaticallyindicates the correct exposure. But even with shotsof considerable brightness range you can take thereadings in such a way as to ensure correctexposure for the main subject.

Normal subjects: the view is lit from the front orat an angle from the side. There are no heavyshadows, and dark and bright areas are balanced. (This uniform front lighting also yields the mostsaturated colours in colour shots.) Result: Themeasured exposure is correct for the whole field ofview. A special case: The main subject contrastsstrongly in brightness against the background. Forexample, with a portrait of a suntanned face againstbright clouds an average reading would give toomuch importance to the sky. Yet it is the headwhich matters for the exposure. The right way:Take a close-up reading with the camera near thesubject (3) until the main object completely fillsthe finder. After setting the exposure go back forshooting to the previous viewpoint (4).

Ersatzmessung: Ist eine Nahmessung nicht mog-lich, visieren Sie ein Ersatzobjekt mit normalenKontrasten bei gleicher Beleuchtung an andverwenden these Einstellung zur Aufnahme.Gegenlicht: Bei Aufnahmen gegen das Lichtempfiehlt es sich, die gemessene Blende um einenWert zu offnen (nachstkleinere Blendenzahl).Bei Farbmotiven, die Sie auf Farbumkehrfilmfotografieren, sind starke Helligkeitskontrastenach Moglichkeit zu vermeiden. Q9 BatteriewechselDer CdS-Belichtungsmesser ist durch kleine Bau-weise ausgezeichnet and wird mit einer Mallory-Batterie PX 13 betrieben.Haltbarkeit der Batterie nach Angabe des Her-stellers: 18 bis 24 Monate. Diese Lebensdauer setztvoraus, dalI die Kamera bei Nichtgebrauch

in der Tasche (im Dunkeln) aufbewahrt wird. (DerSpannungsverlust tritt plotzlich ein. Kennzeichen:Der Belichtungsanzeiger schlagt nicht mehr aus.)Empfohlene Sicherheitsmaflnahmen: Batteriealljahrlich wechseln.Batterie bei langer Nichtbenutzung aus derKamera nehmen.Verbrauchte Batterien auf jeden Fall entfernen.Batterie bei starker Kalte (Auskuhlung derKamera unter -10° C) gegen die Type PX 625austauschen.Auswechseln: Kamera offnen. Substitute readings: If a close-up reading is notpossible, point the camera at a substitute object ofaverage contrast and under the same lighting. Usethe setting obtained for the exposure.Against the light: When shooting against the lightopen the lens aperture by one step (next lower f/number).For colour subjects to be taken on reversalcolour film avoid very great brightness differ-ences. A close-up reading of the shadow areasusually leads to excessive exposure for the sunlitimage portions, which then appear too light andburnt out when you project the slide. An averagebrightness reading (as in the normal case) hereagain yields pictures which correspond mostclosely to the natural colour impression.

(9 Changing the BatteryThe cadmium sulphide exposure meter is partic-ularly compact and powered by a Mallorybattery PX 13.According to the manufacturer, the durability ofthe battery is 18 to 24 months, provided that theunused camera is kept in the case (i. e.

in the dark).
