BackgroundO Teachers are challenged to make students

self-sufficient and autonomous.

The rapid development of ICT has causedgreat changes in society and education.

O The presence of ICT in education hasgiven strength and is a great potential ifused properly.

O the use of CALL is very beneficial forlanguage learning particularly if CALLapplications were well-designed and used.

R ESEARCH METHOD 

O This study employs a descriptive research design as the

objectives of this study are to answer the “who, what,

when, where and how” of the subjects under

study/investigation.

O Using descriptive techniques makes it possible to present

situation or the features of high-school students having

computer-assisted language program in their English

classes which lead to their autonomy in learning.

Population and Samples 

O The sampling procedure used in this studyfalls under the label purposeful sampling. The study was conducted in high-schools(public and private) having Englishlessons conducted using computers andthe Internet. There are 356 students of 12senior high-schools from 6 big cities inJava, Indonesia (Jakarta, Bandung,Jogjakarta, Surakarta, Surabaya, andMalang) and 12 teachers of each school.

O Four sets of questionnaires. Two sets for students

and two sets for teachers.

O Interviews (semi-structured

interviews) for teachers and students

DISCUSSIONSO Students have substantial experiences in

using computers/the Internet. This helpsthem use CALL.

O Teachers support the use of CALL bygiving assignments accomplished bybrowsing the Internet and or presentingusing multi media equipment

O Google translate is very practical forstudents as teachers do not give moreinformation on websites for studyingEnglish
