YOUTH EMPOWERMENT WHY?

• “CYP believes that young people who are empowered by their

societies can be a force of great contribution and advancement both

for themselves and their countries. We also believe that young people

who are marginalized and disempowered by their societies can quickly

become disillusioned and may try to empower themselves through

extreme measures” (Executive Summary, CYP 2006/2008 Strategic

Plan)

• Facilitate the implementation of strategies to enhance youth accessibility and competence in ICT.

• Political parties and other civic groups must engage in a process of modernization and democratization to improve their relevance to young people. They must also adopt appropriate policies and structures to facilitate effective youth participation in their decision making processes.

SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS

• Provide adequate support for the development and promotion of youth artistic and creative abilities.

• Consider new and more efficient methods of increasing access to tertiary education.

• Create avenues for existing youth parliaments to more effectively influence public policy.

• Consider reducing the eligible voting age to 16 years (this may serve as a powerful incentive to enhance the creativity, relevance, attractiveness and dynamism of political parties in particular and the electoral process, generally)
