NEWSLETTER Week 1 Term 1 Wednesday, 6th February 2019

Dear Families, Vision Statement

The Rock Central School will strive to achieve a quality learning culture, which supports students to reach their greatest potential. Our School will meet the individual needs and interests of each student, inspiring them to become, literate and

numerate and productive members of the community

Welcome to 2019! I hope you had a safe holidays in the record breaking heat. Thank you Rural Fire Service Volunteers We would like to show our appreciation to the volunteers of The Rock, Uranquinty and other local fire services for the hard, hot work you did to keep our community safe in fighting the fire on The Rock Hill. You are our parents, rel-atives, and community members and you efforts did not go unnoticed. I hope your children, our students, turn out to be as community minded as you are. Thank you again. Classes and Teachers At this stage, we are starting six classes in Primary/Infants as indicated in 2018. However, one temporary teacher decided to stay in Wagga. Thankfully, Mr Montgomery was available, and has settled into the school seamlessly. He will be team teaching with Mr Millman on Year 5/6, as well as doing relief from face to face teaching across K -5. Un-fortunately, we are still one student short in Primary/Infants numbers to secure the sixth class and Mr Montgomery for the year. In saying that, we are starting this term with the six classes, and it will go back to five classes at the start of next term, if need be. Mrs Humphries has also joined us as a permanent teacher and will be teaching Year 3, with Mrs Hardy teaching the Year 2 students. In secondary Mrs Collins is joining us from Wednesday - Friday, as well as casual days as needed.

Innovation and Change Many of you would have heard our musical start to the day and our lessons, this is an innovative change, and a much more pleasant way to be reminded to change classes, activities etc, than the old bell blasting away. Secondary students this year will be starting the development of Personal Interest Projects (PIP). These student directed projects develop creativity, independent problem solving and many other 21 st Century skills. To start with, these will have a structure to them, which will enable all students to develop their interest project. Progressively the structure will be replaced with the students own initiatives. All primary/infants teachers have an increase in their planning and preparation time. Research has shown that stu-dent improvement is related to teacher’s preparation time and supportive supervision. To allow the effective super-vision of teachers, all executive now have the same release time to work with their teachers and support their pro-fessional development.

School Signs Yes, the school sign to the administration building is up, and looking very reflective. As I mentioned to the students, the significance of the mirror finish is so we can reflect, on the school, each other and the community. Our school is a reflection of The Rock Community, which is a great place to live and learn. The School Vision and Strategic directions are also on the front of the building, so that everyone knows what we stand for, and what we are improving on.

Year 10 Jerseys Students need to pay their deposit as soon as possible, if they want them before winter.

Meet the Teachers – claim the date This meet and greet will commence directly after our - Welcome to Kindergarten and Year 7, presenting House Captains

MLHD & SNSWLHD

Dear Parent, Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

In 2019 the following vaccines will be offered:

YEARS VACCINE NUMBER OF DOSES

Year 7

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine 2-doses at least 6 months apart

Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine

Single dose

Years 10 Meningococcal ACWY vaccine Single dose

Parent Information Kits that include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to:

read all the information provided

complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to receive

return the completed consent form to their child’s school

ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

Please note that students who commence HPV vaccination in school clinics in Year 7 but do not complete the course during the school year may be offered catch-up doses at school in Year 8. Students who have any HPV doses at their GP will be advised to complete the course with their GP.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal or phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation .

To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses throughout the year where possible.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic either as a physical card. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.

Information packs and consent forms will be sent home at the end of February. These will need to be returned to school by 8th March. This is a NSW Department of Health initiative.
