The “Roaring Twenties”
Social Studies, Grade 11(45 minutes)
Rationale:
Students will preview the entire decade through a series of images depicting figures and events. By viewing both positive and negative images, the lesson will change the likely preconceived notions that the “Roaring 20s” was solely a period of leisure, amusement, and prosperity. The activity will appeal to visual learners as well as enhance interpersonal cooperation.
Lesson Objectives
Students will be able to…
• Identify a variety of images representative of the 1920s
• Develop likely captions for such images
• Differentiate between positive and negative events throughout the decade
• Match several historical quotes to their sources
• Compose their own illustration of a key figure or event from the decade
