Beyond compliance?
• Societal reasons:
– Work-related driving = 25-30% of road deaths
– Vehicle incidents = 40-50% of worker fatalities
– Double these numbers if commuting included
• Legal compliance:
– OHS, transport and corporate regulations
• Business:
– Brand, CSR, reputation, loss of key workers, link to fuel efficiency
• Costs:
– Safety and fuel have significant impact on costs *

– Pedestrians = 46.2% of all road traffic fatalities
– Second largest population of road user fatalities =
passengers in buses, minibuses & trucks
• Big increase in fatal road crashes 2011: – 2,330 lives in 13,600 crashes across Ghana
– 19,530 vehicles involved including commercial

Pre-crash risk factors? • Behaviours: Speeding, overloading, irresponsible driving,
wrong over-takings, drink driving & fatigue
• Limited road audits, poor design & maintenance
• Limited separation between conflicting road users
• Limited licencing & training for public transport drivers and
other road users
• Public transport ‘kontem bra ntem’ go fast and be back fast
culture - including bribing officials
• Few policies to protect passengers in commercially
operated buses, minibuses & trucks
• Limited ‘institutional’ policy, collaboration, leadership &
enforcement regarding rules & consequences
