Yi Kochi Chair Message

About Young Indians

Green 1 ad

Friends and colleagues,

Greetings and its an immense honour writing this note to the tabloid of the Yi Southern Regional Summit.

Let me at the outset, say that I have had the pleasure of being part of a wonderful team headed by Ms.Namrata Khona Samra in Kochi to put this summit together and I can see that it has certainly turned out well. My association with Yi over the last few years has made me a better person and I should certainly thank such platforms in the past that has contributed to this.

The theme selected for this summit on “We Build India” with the sub theme running on Good Governance is not only a compelling statement, but it is also a reason for the youth in India to believe in themselves and look at their roles and responsibilities as we see through good and not so good times in the economy. It is noteworthy to also mention here that the summit has been conceptualised not only as a platform for sharing personal and organisational case studies, but also one that will and should serve the need for effective governance in the country and how as youth, we ought to be aware and connect with people that

I am glad to learn that the Young Indians Southern Regional Summit is being organised on 23 & 24 August in Kochi.

The theme for this year’s Summit – ‘We Build India on Good Governance’ is very appropriate and also timely, in the current scenario. The late Prof C K Prahalad’s vision and aspiration of creating an inclusive India by 2022 has been the genesis of India@75 movement which laid greater emphasis on Governance and inclusive growth.

The youth of our country has a greater role in shaping the future of the country. We need more and more entrepreneurs, research scholars and innovators to help drive growth of our economy and more importantly to engage the weaker sections of the society in the developmental process. I am glad that CII Young Indians are working on some of these initiatives in the India@75 programme. I am also happy to note that the CII Young Indians, with its vast network of operations across the country has been working with stakeholders concerned in bringing a positive impact on the country. I can well imagine the strength of so many of you around the country working for nation building – 1500 minds at work is a great thing!

I am sure we can hope for better times in India and it will happen – and the youth will have to keep their heads high to make it real. The challenges in front of you are real and large and so are the opportunities. You need to learn to convert challenges into opportunities and adapt yourself to the changing socio-economic environment. You have the wisdom of the elders that have given us the best chance to engage with them for making an impact of India around the world.

I wish the summit at Kochi a great success and may it trigger a lot more energy and passion in each one of you towards building an India which will stand tall on good governance and inclusive growth.

B Santhanam

Greetings and a pleasure to be connecting with you through this note for the tabloid.

I am extremely delighted to welcome each one of you for the Young Indians Southern Regional summit to Kochi on “We Build India – On Good Governance” on behalf of Yi Kochi chapter.

The last three months has been exciting in many ways. Working with the national and regional team has been a pleasure, I must begin by

appreciating the energy, enthusiasm and Zest of every Yi member in Kochi.

Summits are a great platform for us members across the country to meet and interact, plus a huge learning. Learning gained by organizing a summit is humbling indeed. We waited ten long years for this opportunity. Thanks to Srikant, we got to kick start it this year.

We started off work by working on the theme for the summit. As this is going to be an election year, we felt Good Governance would be a fine subject for us to deliberate on. Yi stands up for highlighting the youth as the tremendous agents for change and as important elements in nation building. And Yi Kochi has put together a summit to bring the government, corporate and the youth on common platform to merge their common sense and wisdoms for healthy governance. This Yi southern regional summit believes in good governance as a tool to take the country to richer planes.

We have requested every speaker to touch upon positive side of governance. The summit has been made as a combination of panel discussions and stand alone sessions and we have some excellent speakers that will be interacting with us – many say that the quality of speakers has been excellent. I take that appreciation and owe it to the excellent team that has worked tirelessly to make this event as it has shaped up.

Team Kochi has had a great time working on this summit not to forget the early morning breakfast meetings, con calls, hundreds of emails, stupid tiffs, sleepless nights when the budget was more than the money in our kitty, etc. But thanks to all my past chairs and dedicated members, who have worked tirelessly to make this event as it has shaped up. Working as a group of friends and colleagues, We Build India, our home. What could be more fulfilling!

Yi has become much more closer to my heart!

Namrata

have set high examples of global excellence through their work.

But to be truly reckoned as a global super power, India has to overcome the hurdles of retaining the fabric of democracy in a diverse population while ensuring Good Governance across the nation. Clearly the challenge for good governance is imminent and needs prioritization for the millions of aspiring youth in the country. As the world’s largest democracy, India holds that promise for not only its own people but for the world as well. It is not a responsibility that places itself as an option but a unique position that the country finds itself in today in a world torn by its own inability to control the aspirations of the many while delivering democracy for the few.

This summit is a culmination of young minds that want to take the nation forward to participating in the India growth story, keeping intact governance and moral leadership as its two eyes. I hope this summit will create more avenues for Yi as an organisation to create leaders that want to be the change they want to see and be.

Prasanna Rajagopalan

India@75 is a term coined by late Prof CK Prahalad, world renowned thinker and professor of strategy at Ross School of Business, the Michigan University, in 2007 as India was celebrating 60 years of freedom. The vision of India@75 was distilled into a single mission statement: “To have an India that will actively shape the new world order through economic strength, technological vitality and moral leadership”.In order to validate the vision, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) undertook a massive visioning exercise in 2008, using collaborative public reasoning processes engaging 6000 people in 21 states, including bureaucrats, politicians, farmers, academicians, students, NGOs, self-employed people, housewives, etc, across the socio-economic and geographical spectrum. The vision document thus collated was titled “India @ 75 - the People’s Agenda”.Seven key pillars i.e. urbanization & environmental

Young Indians (Yi) is an integral part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), a non-government, not-for-profit, industry led and industry managed organisation playing a proactive role in India’s development process. Yi was formed in the year 2002 with an objective of creating a platform for young Indians to realise the dream of a developed nation. Yi has around 1500 direct members in 28 city chapters, 300 members through its corporate chapters, 6000 students through student nets and 8500 young and progressive farmers through the farmer nets.

“To become the Voice of Young Indians Globally” being the vision of Yi, it provides a platform for young Indians to participate in and contribute by becoming an integral part of the Indian growth story. Yi’s work can be divided primarily into three groups; “Youth Leadership”, “Youth Social Entrepreneurship” and

“International Engagements”. The “Next Practices” vertical of Yi engages the students and members to bring out, “out of the box” and innovative solutions to common problems for the region and the nation at large. Done under the “Blue Ocean Dialogue” brand, the ideas that have come out of these engaged workshops have been captured for further processing.

Through its initiatives like Akshara under Education, Yi has impacted more than 15000 students across 57 centers and has successfully managed campaigns like the ‘SYightboard Project’, providing blackboards to schools across different cities, reaching out to 1070 schools nationally and impacting approximately 2,53,000 children.

Within the sphere of Environment, Yi conducts Green I contest to encourage and motivate school children

to bring out sustainable green campuses through ideas, campaigns for tree plantation, solid waste management projects, involving citizens and children in the process. Yi is also in the process of planting one million saplings across the country through its ‘One Million Tree Project’.

Yi is one of the proud founders of the G20 Young Entrepreneurs’ Alliance which is a collective of leading entrepreneurially-minded organizations representing the G20 countries who seek to promote youth entrepreneurship and is one of the founders of the Commonwealth Asia Alliance of Young Entrepreneurs (CAAYE), is a network of young entrepreneurs from the Commonwealth Asia. With ten years of glorious past and decades ahead that promise nothing short, Yi intends to become a larger movement of young people and promote the attitude of “We Can, We Will”.

honking in the city over a span of 2 years.
