Hello and welcome to The Riverfront Spring 2016 brochure!Following a momentous 2015, which saw us achieve recordbreaking attendance figures and form a major part ofNewport Live, we begin 2016 with a jam-packed season ofevents, performances, cinema screenings and workshops.

We kick things off in January with one of the world’s biggestcomedy acts, the brilliant Eddie Izzard!With a season alsofeaturing Rory McGrath, Debra Stephenson the wonderfulComedy Club 4 Kids, and our monthly Comedy Shed event,we can certainly guarantee a giggle this Spring!

Hot on the heels of the panto we’ve got more fabulous family fun this season too, including a Half Term cinemaoffering of The Good Dinosaur andStar Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Another huge highlight for us this Spring is the opportunity to be involved in the British Dance Edition. We’re delightedto be hosting three performances here in March, forming partof a nation-wide celebration of dance.

Newport SchoolsDance FestivalThe Newport Schools’ Dance Festival wasestablished over seventeen years ago and takesplace annually, over four evenings. It wasoriginally set up by Newport City Council’s P.E.Advisory Service, to showcase the fantastic danceand P.E. work which takes place in NewportSchools, and also to give pupils the opportunityto perform on a professional stage.

Over the past seventeen years, the Dance Festivalhas continued to grow and last year, saw morethan six hundred pupils, from over twenty-five ofNewport’s Schools, involved. Each year, teachersand pupils work extremely hard to come up witha range of stunning costumes and outstandingdance routines, resulting in four incredibleevenings of entertainment for all.

Nobody Likes aPixelated Squid & The Wonders of the UniverseWeird science meets hip-hop in a dance double bill that is out of this world…

In an evening of dance, comedy and extremes thisdouble bill takes audiences on a journey from thebottom of the sea to the far reaches of the universe.

Swedish/Canadian B-boy and B-girl duo EmmanuelleLe Phan and Elon Höglund aka Tentacle Tribe, bringtheir production Nobody Likes a Pixelated Squid toWales in a performance inspired by creatures of landand sea. These dynamic street-dancers have sold out allover the world and their celebrated creature featuremakes one half of this thrilling, fun and enlighteningevening of dance.

The Wonders of the Universe from Wales’ KarolCysewski is another kettle of fish (a pre-historic fish)offering a humorous and stimulating interpretation ofthe documentary of the same title. Three geeks and acelebrity scientist (voice over by Brian Cox) take animaginative look at the origins of the universe.

Both performances will make you think, laugh and lookat the world in a different way. From tiny creatures ofthe sea and sky, some downright fishy things that makeus human, to all the wonders of the universe.

Known to millions for his legendary exploits onthe rugby field, ‘Grav’ was and is so much morethan that. An actor, a cultural icon, a father, ahusband, a man with a life packed full of storiesthat deserve to be heard once more.

The Torch Theatre Company presents Gareth Baleas ‘Grav’ in a play written by Owen Thomas thatcelebrates the man and the legend. With theblessing of Mari, Ray’s widow, and contributionsfrom his Welsh and British Lions team mates, thisone man show will explore the life of a man whowas as fascinating away from the rugby field ashe was on it.

Events take place between 12pm-5pm andinclude a question and answer session withauthor of My Fathers Betrayal and Winner of The Feminism in London Award 2015,Gabriella Gillespie.

At 5pm the International Women’s DayExhibition will open, showcasing female artistsand featuring a performance by conceptualperformance artist Victoria E. Jones.

At 7.45pm there will be a screening of criticallyacclaimed Suffragette (12A), documenting thefoot soldiers of the early feminist movement.

A creche will be provided during the day,courtesy of Flying Start.

When Mr and Mrs Mungus have a baby it isn’tthe bouncy blue-eyed boy they were hoping for.After a two-and-a-half year pregnancy, MiniMungus gives birth to a monster – one with anaccelerated growth rate and an insatiableappetite for anything that moves (includingjoggers). But when sinister military scientistsbecome intent on cloning an army of giantbabies from the giant, he breaks his chains and escapes.

The world can only watch in horror as heembarks on learning how to walk and rampantdestruction ensues. Who will decide his tragicfate? Who will stop this freak of nature? Andwho, more importantly, will change his nappy?

How to Find UsSituated opposite the main bus station, a 10 minute walk from Newport train station and a 5 minute stroll from the city centre. The Riverfront is easily accessible byfoot, car, coach and train.

ParkingThere is a small Pay and Display carpark just past The Riverfront on theriverside which is free after 6.30pm.

The next closest car parks are themulti-storey Kingsway Car Park and Friar’s Walk Car Park, which are a short, flat five minute walk from the venue.
