Volcanoes• Indonesia is directly

located in the Pacific Ring of Fire. This has allowed it to be a volcano breeding ground where it houses nearly 129 ACTIVE volcanoes.

• Like many other things unique to Indonesia alone, it also has the world’s most deadly volcano.

Mt. Merapi: The Mountain of Fire

• Mt Merapi is a stratovolcano located in the center of the largest island and only a few miles away from the capitol city of Jakarta.

• It has been active for 10,000 years and is still active with its last eruption being in 2012 and a very deadly one in 2010.

• Roughly 100,000 villagers still live at the base and continue to return after each eruption. Most likely due to the fertile soil.

Deadly Eruption

The last known eruption was 2012 but before that there was a huge eruption in Oct. of 2010 with high death tolls that spewed for weeks:

• About 140-300 people suspected dead

• Spewed hot gases and ash about 5,000 meters

• 78 people where found dead in a designated “safe zone” about 9 miles away from the volcano in Brongang

Air travel is halted often in Indonesia because of the numerous spewing volcanoes. Mt. Merapi has stopped air travel a lot. • During the 2010 eruption• 2012 eruption “airlines in neighboring

countries cancel all flights to Jakarta.”• Most recently this year as well….

Recent ActivityNovember 18th of this year Mt. Merapi began to spew ash about 2,000 meters in the air. The volcano began to calm down towards the 3rd of December but there is still an active WARNING for Merapi and the surrounding villages.
