NEWS AND VIEWS FROM AROUND VAUXHALL AND GM GLOBALNEWS AND VIEWS FROM AROUND VAUXHALL AND GM

We had some great news last month when GM issued its Q1 2010 results, with adjusted earnings before interest and tax at $1.7 billion in the first quarter, up $2.7 billion from Q4 2009. This is very positive news for Vauxhall – GM posting a profit and generating positive cash flow are important steps on the way to rebuilding the entire global organisation and enabling the required investment in the regions.

The momentum continues in the UK too, with some strong performances in April. Corsa retail sales were up 19.1 per cent against April 2009 and Meriva total sales were also up, by 34.3 per cent. The all-new Astra is proving a great success in both the retail and fleet markets, achieving number 1 in the retail market as I write this column. LCV sales were ahead of forecasted total share and Aftersales posted strong results, too.

We’re now getting ready to launch the new Meriva, with its innovative FlexDoors. This truly is a ground-breaking product that is sure to be a hit with customers. The journalists were certainly impressed at our recent press launch and one of our employees has also had a chance to try it out – turn to page 18 to get a sneak preview.

Add in the new Movano, which is in showrooms now, and you’ve two great new products that show Vauxhall’s innovation and versatility at their finest.

Our support for Help for Heroes is gathering pace. Employees and Retailers continue to do amazing things to raise money for this worthy cause. You can read just some of their fund-raising efforts so far on page 22.

Thank you to everyone who is helping put Vauxhall on the front foot again. We are positioning ourselves well for success in the coming months and years. Let’s continue to make Vauxhall The Best Automotive Company in the UK.

The Vauxhall Ampera passed an important milestone in April when the first pre-production car rolled off the line at GM’s Pre-Production Operations assembly line in Warren, Michigan.

More validation Amperas will be built in coming months, and will be used by engineers in Europe and the United States for testing the production-intent design. The focus will be on developing the

final vehicle software and controls, fine-tuning the vehicle’s driving characteristics, and performing safety and structural integrity testing.

“We’re right on target for producing the Ampera for European markets later next year,” said Andrew Farah, Vehicle Chief Engineer for Ampera. “There’s still work to be done, but being able to drive an Ampera off our pre-production line is a great accomplishment for the teams here and in Europe.”

The Ampera extended-range electric vehicle delivers up to 40 miles of pure electric driving before an engine-generator kicks in to sustain the battery charge and seamlessly extends the range to more than 300 miles. The battery can be charged by plugging the vehicle’s on-board charge system into a standard household outlet. It is scheduled to be in UK showrooms by early 2012.

25 April started like any other Sunday for Marc Smith, but by the end of the day he would be hailed as a hero for saving a young woman’s life and averting a train crash.

It all started when a 21-year-old woman lost control of her car and it rolled down an embankment, onto the train track.

From the corner of his eye, Vauxhall Aftersales Area District Manager Marc noticed a dust cloud caused by the car skidding and decided to investigate.

The Ford Fiesta had landed on its side and the hysterical woman was unable to free herself. Marc flagged down a passing motorist and together they raced to the bottom of the embankment to free the woman, while someone else called for an ambulance.

Unable to open the car door, the two men rocked the car upright and pulled the woman to safety.

But the drama wasn’t over. Marc realised that car was still sitting on the railway line. It had to be moved to avert a disaster. “Luckily, it was a small car and we were able to pick it up and roll it clear of the track,” said Marc. And it’s lucky they did – just seconds later, a passenger train roared past.

The young woman was taken to hospital where she was treated for shock but later released unhurt.

Formula One star Lewis Hamilton will be heading to Millbrook Proving Ground on 13 July to take part in the FIA Foundation eSafety Challenge.

The invitation-only event promotes crucial life-saving eSafety technologies which help drivers in emergency situations and Millbrook has been chosen as the host location.

The eSafety Challenge event will include demonstrations with celebrity drivers and hands-on driving experiences

for delegates, as well as an exhibition and conference using Millbrook’s test tracks and event space.

eSafety technologies include electronic stability control, blind spot monitoring and speed alerts.

Miguel Fragoso, Managing Director of Millbrook, said: “It is a great privilege not only for the event to be held at Millbrook, but for our name to be associated with the eSafety Challenge. These technologies have the potential to save thousands of lives across the globe.”

As part of its regulatory inspection, Ellesmere Port plant has achieved a low environmental risk rating for the second year running.

Achieving a low environmental risk rating not only demonstrates the plant’s commitment to managing its environmental impacts, but also reduces the annual subsistence charges for 2010.

HIRE AND HIGHERVauxhall is now offering customers a new and innovative way to drive its latest cars. Based on a Personal Contract Hire (PCH) scheme, buyers can take advantage of a low initial outlay followed by affordable monthly payments.

For example, a new 2010 Corsa SXi is available through the scheme for just £189 per month, with an initial rental of only £567.

The programme, which can be based on either a two, three or four year agreement, removes the anxiety of making a cash purchase and suffering depreciation, while allowing customers to replace their car after a set period with no disposal concerns.

Other Vauxhall models are also available on competitive PCH terms.

“With Scrappage now at an end we recognise that buyers are still looking for low cost solutions to getting into a new car,” said Retail Sales Director, Rory Harvey. “Our new PCH scheme makes this possible while offering drivers the prestige of driving a new Vauxhall with the latest technology every two to four years.”

The CV Show is the UK’s premier road transport event and Vauxhall was there in force this year.

The new Movano had been launched to the press and retailers back in March at Millbrook, but now it was the turn of the public. So it was vital to give the new vehicle the launch it deserved.

With a stand full of new Movanos all under wraps in advance of the premiers, it was over to Director of Communications, Denis Chick, to introduce the vehicle. Then it was ‘covers off’ to reveal the new Movano – in all its panel van guises.

And it couldn’t have gone better. The Vauxhall stand became an instant focal point and Vauxhall Chairman Bill Parfitt also attended the launch to conduct some press interviews.

Simon Culley, Marketing Manager Commercial Vehicles, said: “I’ve been working on the new Movano launch since May 2008. Back then, the launch was something I couldn’t visualise, but it was great to see us finally launching a fantastic new product on the best stand at the show with the best CV team in the industry. We’ve got high expectations of the new Movano but, as our communications campaign line says, there’s ‘No Job Too Big’.”

British automotive logistics provider ECM has won GM’s prestigious Global Supplier of the Year award for the second time in three years.

ECM delivers Vauxhall vehicles to the UK dealer network and transports Opel-branded cars and vans from Ellesmere Port and Luton plants to ports of exit for onward shipment to continental Europe.

GM whittled its 20,000 suppliers worldwide down to 76 of the best. ECM, the only overland carrier and UK company, was chosen for the top award for its willingness to go the extra mile during what was one of GM’s most challenging years in its history.

The award was presented to ECM’s Chairman and Managing Director Ray Mac Dowall at the GM Design Dome, Warren, Michigan.

Commenting on the news, Ray Mac Dowall said:“In consideration of the scale and diversity of GM’s global supply base, for a UK logistics supplier to be recognised as a world-class supplier by one of the world’s largest companies is very special. I am very proud and privileged to have been able to receive this award on behalf our employees. We are all extremely grateful to everyone at GM Europe and in particular Elliot Swiss, Director of Logistics GM Europe, and Mark Poulton, Manager Logistics UK & Ireland, for their nomination.”

GENIUS IDEA

Insurance company Allianz has awarded its “Genius 2010” prize to Vauxhall/Opel for its AFL+safety lighting system. Rita Forst, Vice President Global Vehicle Engineering at Vauxhall/Opel, accepted it in Leipzig from Genius patron Karsten Crede, management board member of Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty AG.

Pedestrians and cyclists are difficult to see in the dark and are therefore often involved in serious accidents. AFL+ (Adaptive Forward Lighting) optimises the driver’s range of visibility and illumination

of the roadside without blinding oncoming traffic. According to Allianz, the system considerably reduces the risk of accidents at dusk and at night.

Rita accepted the award on behalf of the entire team of engineers who worked on the project. “We were the first car maker to bring AFL to the market back in 2002,” she said. “With AFL+, which has been on the Insignia since 2008 and available for the new Astra since last year, we offer the most advanced lighting system in the world.”

When Angela Munday went into labour things happened fast. Luckily, there was plenty of v-room in the family zafira!

When Angela found out she was expecting her second son, she and her husband decided to swap their Corsa for a bigger model. Little did they realise that their next vehicle would be a true family car – in every sense.

The Mundays shopped around and were won over by the style and size of the zafira SRi diesel with XP pack. “This was the best thing we could have done – the size paid dividends in the end,” said Angela.

Angela went into labour in the early hours of 21 January. The couple called the midwife and arranged to go to the labour ward at the local hospital at 8am. But by 6am things were progressing very quickly – in fact, a little too quickly. Angela’s contractions were well underway and she knew she needed to get to the hospital fast. Just half an hour later they were on their way to the hospital.

But this baby was certainly in a hurry to enter the world. Just as they arrived at the hospital entrance, baby Ben was born on the front seat of the zafira, weighing a healthy 7lb 2oz.

“Everything turned out fine and I’m glad we picked the zafira. You can certainly say it’s a true family car and will always have a place in our hearts.” said Angela.

Bruce Vickers, Managing Director of Vickers Lakeside has been voted Thurrock Businessman of the Year. The award, sponsored by Thurrock Business Association, is designed to recognise business excellence in the area.

Bruce started his working life as an apprentice technician in the 1960s and worked his way up the ladder to become Managing Director of Vickers Lakeside. In 2009 he expanded the business by purchasing the site of an adjoining dealer adding 46 staff and doubling his turnover.

Leader of Thurrock Council, Garry Hague, said: “I’ve been impressed by the commitment of so many of our local businesses to want to give something back to our local communities.” And Bruce is no exception – he is a founder member of the Thurrock Community Chest, raising more than £250,000 for local good causes.

Two ex-retail operators have joined forces to start up a small dealer group in the north east. And they’ve begun by taking over the reins at Willis of Alnwick and Millburn of Ashington.

Brian Baxter and David Storey were originally from Vertu Motors but they have branched out on

their own with the financial backing of John Tustain to set up Tustain Motors.

Managing Director Brian explained: “David and I have been with Vauxhall for several years and we were keen to branch out on our own and set up a small dealer network. This opportunity was too good to miss so when John, another ex-colleague, came up with

the finance, it was all systems go.”The pair have started their enterprise

by taking over two well-established and successful family-run businesses where

the owners were looking to retire with no obvious successor. Brian continued: “These are both great

businesses with excellent staff and very strong standing in the local community. We’ve had a fabulous welcome both from employees and customers. The team have really got behind our values and culture and we will continue the strong tradition of customer care and friendly, helpful service that the previous owners have built up. We’d love to expand the franchise further and this has been a really good start.”

Franchise Manager, Alastair Cassels helped put the deal together for Vauxhall. He said: “Tustain Motors have ambitions to expand so I hope these small beginnings are the start of a big success for them. I’d also like to thank Stan Willis and Ray and Chris Allington for their years of service with Vauxhall. May they all enjoy a long and happy retirement.”

This marks a significant turnabout for American automakers as when the same question was asked in a December 2006 survey, 46 per cent said Asian countries made superior cars, while just 29 per cent preferred American vehicles.

Network Q customers can now get discounts on MoTs as well as parts and labour – just by being a member of the MasterFit Service Club.

Club members can get MoTs for half price, and there’s a sliding scale of discounts for labour and parts, depending on the age of the car. The older the car, the greater the discount, so careful drivers who have looked after their cars are in for a treat.

Andrew Curley, MasterFit Manager, said: “Network Q customers have an eye for a bargain. For many, their car is their pride and joy and by giving them great deals on parts, labour and MoTs, we can help keep their

CAMARO WINS DESIGN OF THE yEAR AWARDThe Chevrolet Camaro has been awarded World Car Design of the year at the 2010 New york International Auto Show.

“We have been delighted about the strong reaction to the Camaro. Even in markets that are new to Chevy, it has been creating an emotional appeal for the brand,” said Tom Peters, Chevrolet design director, Global RWD, Performance Cars and Full-size Trucks.

GM and OnStar’s Stolen Vehicle Slowdown (SVS) service helped safely recover a 2009 Chevrolet Impala belonging to State Senator Terry Burton, stolen in Jackson, Mississippi.

When Senator Burton realized his Chevrolet Impala was stolen he called OnStar to report the theft.

OnStar advisors were able to quickly locate the Impala and alert the Hinds County Sheriff Department officers of its location. When officers had the vehicle in sight, they requested that Stolen Vehicle Slowdown be initiated and the vehicle was safely slowed to a stop.

“This technology is extremely helpful not only to our officers, but to the public as well,” said Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin. “I was very pleased with the experience and the fact that OnStar was able to help us curtail a high-speed chase, which too often has disastrous results.”

And the Sheriff isn’t the only person to appreciate the technology. OnStar’s Stolen Vehicle Slowdown technology has picked up two awards: a Silver Edison Award for Best New Product of the Year in the technology category and the Most Advanced Technology Award at the Auto China 2010 auto show in Beijing.

Gm Chairman and CEo Ed Whitacre has announced that Gm has made its final payment of $5.8 billion to the Us Treasury and Export Development Canada, paying back its government loans in full, ahead of schedule.

The announcement came at a ceremony to highlight an investment of $257 million at Gm’s fairfax, Kansas, and Detroit hamtramck assembly centres. The investment will prepare fairfax to build the next generation of Chevrolet’s award-winning malibu, and make Detroit hamtramck a second source for malibu, ensuring that Chevrolet can meet market demand for this popular car.

“Gm is able to repay the taxpayers in full, with interest, ahead of schedule, because more customers are buying vehicles like the Chevrolet malibu and Buick laCrosse we build here in fairfax,” said Ed. “We are now building some of the best cars, trucks, and crossovers we have ever built, and customers are taking note. our dealers are increasing their sales, we are investing in our plants, and we are restoring and creating jobs.”

Chevrolet will be introduced in Korea in 2011. GM Daewoo Auto & Technology President and CEO Mike Arcamone made the announcement at a press conference held in conjunction with the opening of the Busan International Motor Show.

“The introduction of Chevrolet will enable us to provide our customers with an array of exciting new vehicles from the brand’s global lineup, giving them more driving options,” he said. “This will help GM Daewoo increase our sales and market share in the domestic market while generating additional revenue, strengthening our employees’ job security, creating new jobs and resulting in additional investment in Korea. We regard it as a key to our long-term success.”

As an example of the products that Korean consumers can expect, GM Daewoo introduced the new Chevrolet Camaro at its motor show stand. The popular sports car will go on sale in Korea in 2011.

“According to our market research, half of all Koreans are familiar with the brand and more than 80 per cent are aware of Chevrolet’s distinctive logo,” said Mike.

NEW PLANT DIRECTORS

a proven track record. There are a lot of talented people here – we just need to keep our eye on the ball and we’ll be back to where we were.”

Once productivity improves, then Ellesmere Port will be in great shape for the launch of the Sports Tourer. Tony’s a fan: “it’s going to be a wonderful car. it maintains the same sleek appearance of the astra, but there’s much more space for a family. We’ll be the only plant in Europe to build the Sports Tourer so it’s even more

important that we get the production and efficiency right. i can’t tell you the exact launch date, but i’m confident it will be before the end of the year.”

next on his list of priorities is to move Ellesmere Port to three shifts. “again, i can’t give an exact date. The market will determine that, but things

are going well so i’m quietly confident. new astra really is a great product. Let’s be honest, it’s easy to sell cars when the market is doing well but, to sell well in a recession, you need a truly great product. and that’s exactly what we’ve got.”

MEANWHILE, AT LUTONFor mark Stein (right), coming to Luton is coming home. He worked at the plant until 2004 before moving to Ellesmere Port. From there, he moved to Seoul and spent three years as Director of Quality Operations where he was responsible for quality in 16 plants in six countries. “it’s a beautiful part of the world and we had a fantastic time, but it’s great to be back. Everything is so much easier when you speak the language – and i never thought i’d miss English road signs!”

it’s been six years since mark was last working in Luton and he can see there’s been huge progress at the plant in that time. “The metrics and scorecard are as good as they’ve ever been and that’s indisputable evidence that there’s nothing fundamentally broken.”

There’s one other barometer of the efficiency of a plant – the repair float. “To me, that’s the quickest way to gauge how well the entire system of Press, Body, Paint and ga is running. and the number of vans in repair is an

obvious difference that i can see after a six-year break. The best plants in gm aim for a total ga repair float of significantly less than one hour’s production and for us that’s a maximum of 20. That’s about where we are at right now and we need to continue to reduce that number.”

First among mark’s priorities is to ensure the separation package is handled efficiently so that the plant right-sizes without impacting quality, safety or any other key measures.

next on the list is securing the plant’s next model. “The current product, the Vivaro, runs out in 2013 and we’re in discussions to secure the next model to guarantee our long-term sustainable future. it’s no secret that we’re looking for the next product. nick Reilly came to Luton a couple of months ago and said the same thing. it’s great to be part of securing that future for Luton.”

Luton is a far cry from Seoul, so what experiences can mark bring to the plant from his experiences in asia Pacific? “a lot of plants in asia are extremely cost-driven. investment and automation are very low and they are heavily dependent on manual processes and people. Finding solutions through people and not through equipment is very effective and we can learn from that. Having said that, Luton is as close to that model as any plant in Europe. Historically, the plant is good at coming up with simple, low-cost solutions so it’s not a huge leap.”

“gm’s global manufacturing system (gmS) gives us the framework for everything we do and the plant has made good progress. We need to cascade gmS as effectively and efficiently as we can to get real results, not simply to pass an audit. Then it’s a question of maintaining the green scorecard, keeping our focus

on the metrics and continuing to reduce cost in everything we

do. if we can improve our competitiveness, then that will help us compile the business case for the next model. There’s no magic formula, but all those things together will help us win through.”

It’s a new era for Ellesmere Port and Luton as both plants welcome new directors. We asked Tony Francavilla and Mark Stein about their plans for the future

a Canadian who has come to Ellesmere Port by way of Poland and the United States, Tony Francavilla is enjoying his time in the UK. as we meet on a chilly Tuesday, everyone else is complaining about the cold weather but Tony’s Canadian optimism shines through. “it’s been sunny every day since i arrived. it must be a good omen,” he says. “Remember, i grew up in Canada and i’ve just spent a winter in Poland. i don’t feel the cold.”

Tony’s experience in Poland is perfect for Ellesmere Port. He spent two years at gliwice as the plant built and launched the all-new astra. So he knows exactly what the plant has been going through and he’s ready for the next challenge – the launch of the astra Sports Tourer.

although he’s only been in the UK for a few weeks, already he’s feeling right at home. “The work ethic here is very similar to Canada and i like the fact that people speak their minds. add to that the fact that we’re building a very similar

product here – and the sunshine – and i’m enjoying my time here.”

it may only be a few weeks since his arrival, but he’s certainly not wasting time. One of his key priorities is to bring the plant’s efficiency back to 2008 levels when the cost per car was extremely competitive. “The plant is not running as well as it could due to the recession. my job is to improve that efficiency so that we’re in the best possible position as demand surges. it’s important for our long-term survival – and, of course, for Vauxhall.

“Ellesmere Port was a beacon for quality and efficiency. it really showed everybody that this part of the world was a success. i want us to go back to that success. What happened is that everybody else moved ahead while we got stuck in a groove. We need to pick up the pace on productivity and keep doing things better. NEW MERIVA

18 TORQUE magazinE 19JUnE 2010

If you’ve ever had to strap a struggling toddler into a car seat, then the launch of the New Meriva with its FlexDoors will open up a whole new world.

And if you need convincing, then ask Business Management Service Manager, Emma Robson – she’s been taking a New Meriva out and about in advance of the official launch. She’s a big fan and, crucially, so are her children, four-year-old Maisie and Archie, two.

“This is the first car that the kids have really liked,” said Emma. “Maisie thinks it’s really cool and it really is child-friendly. The panoramic roof is brilliant because they can sit in the back and watch the sky. Archie loves spotting planes and birds as we drive along.”

It’s all very well keeping the children entertained during a long drive – but what about those FlexDoors? “They’re brilliant,” said Emma. “They make such a big difference when getting the kids in and out of their car seats. It’s really quite tortuous in a conventional car but this really does make the process so much easier. Archie can even climb into the New Meriva by himself, now.”

Emma has been extolling the virtues of the New Meriva to anyone who’ll listen. “The first time I took it to the nursery to pick up the children, one of the other mums asked what I was driving. So I went into full demo mode! I showed them the FlexDoors and the boot space, the panoramic roof and even the heated steering wheel. A lot of them were smitten.”

When Emma is out and about for work, she has been driving the New Meriva. “Retailers have all been hugely impressed. The benefits for families are so clear that they think it will be very easy to sell.”

So that’s the panoramic roof and the FlexDoors taken care of – any other features Emma can recommend? “The windscreen is massive, giving a really clear view with no blind spots. It’s really comfortable and there’s a lot more

A door-able New Meriva

I’m in love with the New Meriva! Honestly! It’s so superb that I am actually reconsidering what I drive. It made my week so much easier – I never would have thought a car could do that. Gray, my partner, used to be a mechanic and, like most men, is obsessed with cars. He really rates the car and has shown me (a few times now) why ‘it’s so clever’, so that’s a good accolade for starters.

The FlexDoors are amazing, they are superbly useful, in fact they are the best thing about this car! Instead of opening like normal car doors do, the back doors open like taxi doors, so they give you more space to get your child in and out of the car and you don’t have to be a contortionist to strap your child into the car seat.

The storage is very clever – because there is no hand brake, there’s loads of room between the two front seats for storage. It can also slide back as well as have another tier connected to create even more compartments, so I had my coffee, wet wipes, my breakfast, house keys, make-up, baby horsey, baby giraffe…(very essential) all accommodated comfortably.

Our first trip in the car was that familiar mummy trip – to the supermarket! The back seats where Ava sits had little trays that fold down so I made Ava a little picnic to eat on the journey. She loved it! She sat quietly in the back eating her snacks and pretending she was on a plane!

Once it started to get dark, Ava suddenly said to me: ‘the stars, looks at the stars mama’ and I realised that she was looking up through the panoramic roof at the stars in the sky. That kept her riveted until she nodded off to sleep. Is it any wonder Ava calls the New Meriva ‘mama’s magic car’?

space – I can sit easily in the back between the child seats, and that’s a first! There’s a lot of boot space – enough for a buggy AND the shopping. And the designers have given a lot of thought to storage. There’s room for my sunglasses, as well as juice bottles and all the paraphernalia you need with small children. And then there’s the heated steering wheel. Maybe it’s a girl thing, but I love it!”

MILLBROOK

With so many of our troops at risk in afghanistan, the testing of military vehicles before they are deployed to theatre needs to be a rigorous and thorough process. as home to the ministry of Defence’s ‘Battlefield mission’, millbrook is recognised as one of the foremost facilities to carry out what they refer to as ‘the carefully defined simulation of typical operational usage’.

“The gm Bedford truck was THE choice of vehicle for the British army for many years,” explains mark Coverley, Director of Business Strategy and Projects at millbrook. “So when Vauxhall constructed millbrook Proving ground it was designed and built to be able to test these types of vehicle.

“The Bedford TK range was produced in large numbers since 1959, and served as the basis for a variety of military vehicle derivatives, all of which were tested and developed here at millbrook.”

now in its fortieth anniversary year, millbrook continues its work with the military, although many things have changed over this time. “Since 2003, millbrook has been contracted directly to the moD and military vehicle manufacturers,” continues mark, “and we’ve been carrying out a wide range of

“CENTRAL TO VEHICLE RELIABILITY AND DURABILITY IS THE BATTLEFIELD MISSION, AND FOR THIS THERE’S ONE ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT – HILLS!”

Millbrook’s work with the military continues to move with the times

work on all types of wheeled vehicles, looking at reliability and durability, vehicle mobility and stability over many types of terrains and hazards, overall vehicle performance and even some areas to do with human factors; making the vehicles more ‘user friendly’ for both the drivers and their passengers.”

Central to the reliability and durability work at millbrook is the ‘Battlefield mission’ – a series of track-based tests designed to prove that a vehicle will survive operational duties in a wide range of conditions. and for this there’s one essential ingredient available in abundance at millbrook – hills! The combination of specialist track surfaces and features built at millbrook over the years, some specifically designed for military vehicles, along with the on- and off-road tracks set in natural hills makes millbrook pretty unique among the proving grounds of the world.

But it’s not all fun and games driving military vehicles through the mud and water, as mark explains: “We test all types of vehicle before they go on deployment. Recently we’ve been working on the Jackal high-mobility Tactical Support Vehicle – an open-topped vehicle designed for desert warfare but we had to drive it through one of the longest and worst winters in recent years. Our drivers were exposed to the elements throughout, so if anyone thinks that a test driver’s life is glamorous …!”

While a lot of activity is carried out on the tracks at millbrook, work is also done in the laboratories, particularly for environmental tests. military vehicles deployed into regions such as afghanistan have to cope with hot temperatures and high humidity which you won’t normally find here in the UK even during a good summer, let alone in the midst of winter, so this has to be simulated under controlled conditions. millbrook’s ‘Variable Temperature Emissions Chamber’, or VTEC for short, is the ideal facility to do this. High enough to take a double decker bus, and long enough for a railway carriage, the VTEC can take even the largest of the wheeled military vehicles, subjecting them to

temperatures up to +50°C and down to -35°C (yes – even though the vehicles are destined for hot climates they’re still proven in sub-zero conditions as well), and with a large ‘solar load’ array designed to bake the vehicles as if they were under the middle Eastern sun!

away from the tracks, millbrook’s expertise in data collection and analysis is being used in another vital area for our troop’s safety – blast protection. The threat of iEDs, ‘improvised Explosive Devices’, has led the designers of military vehicles to explore new ways to make the vehicles safer. “millbrook has many years’ experience in vehicle crash testing where the data has to be collected quickly and reliably – a typical crash is over in one-fifth of a second and it’s not the sort of test you can simply do again if you get it wrong!” says Phil glyn-Davies, Head of Crashworthiness Engineering. “This expertise is being used to fit our crash test dummies into vehicles, subject them to a simulated iED blast, and collect the resulting data from the dummy so we can predict the likelihood of injury. i should point out we don’t do the blowing up part – we leave that to the specialists!” The millbrook Test Team have an unrivalled reputation for this work and are in constant demand travelling all over the UK, and even overseas, to support this important work.

Back at millbrook, the site is also host to the largest wheeled vehicle military exhibition in the UK.

“We’ve been hosting this show at millbrook since 2003,” says martin neale, Head of Events at millbrook. “it’s organised by the part of the moD responsible for equipping and supporting the UK’s armed forces for current and future operations. Last year was by far the most successful event attracting authorised visitors from across the defence community, with small, medium and large companies displaying equipment, systems and services including vehicles, tented accommodation, clothing, medical supplies, fuels and even aircraft servicing equipment. This year it promises to be even bigger!”

our time at the moment. One of our members is coming for a meeting tomorrow to discuss his package. Talking to our members and representing them where necessary is the most important part of our job and i try never to lose sight of that.

10.30amBack to the paperwork. This time it’s for the Joint Leadership Committee meeting with the company next week. We meet the company every month to discuss important industry relations issues. as a group, we also meet weekly to discuss any issues in the plant.

12pmnext up is paperwork for next week’s pension board meeting. i am vice chair and my union colleagues are trustees. new laws state that we should be more

involved in the allocation of money for investing in the pension fund. it’s a big responsibility because this affects

the livelihood of our members. The pension fund went through a difficult

time recently but, after consideration, we increased members’ contributions and offered our members a choice. a lot of

people came to us for help. most people were able to make an informed

decision and the pension fund is now back on an even keel.

2pma quick call to Patrick Hall, the ex-Labour mP for Bedford and Kempston. i was his agent during his election campaign in may and i’m sorry to say the best mP Bedford has had lost his seat. nevertheless, a small job of sorting out the expenses involved in the election has to be done.

i believe union officials should be involved in politics which complements our role as convenor. i’m chair of our local Central Labour Party. it was Patrick and Kelvin Hopkins, mP for Luton north who lobbied on Vauxhall’s behalf with Lord mandelson. We met him at his offices in London and invited him to the plant. His involvement played a big role in saving the plant.

3.30pmOn my way through the shop floor i meet several members who ask for advice and help. i make a note to follow these up later.

4pmTime to go home but i leave the door open just in case anyone finishing their shift wants to talk. it’s important to be here when our members need us – after all, it’s us who serve them.

There’s a lot of freedom in this job, but also plenty of involvement.

no football to referee tonight or canvassing on doorsteps. a rare chance to be at home.

Fleet firstThe Fleet team had high hopes for the Fleet News awards this year. The biggest prize of the night – Fleet manufacturer of the Year – was awarded at the end of the evening. The Fleet team were full of anticipation and when Vauxhall’s name was read out, they were ecstatic.

“it’s the one award that everyone wants,” said national Corporate Sales manager Bob Cosby. “it’s voted by customers so it’s the top accolade of the night. We were so elated to win – especially after such a difficult year that we couldn’t quite believe it. What a fantastic achievement!”

Fleet News editor Stephen Briers believes the award is well-deserved. He said: “Vauxhall’s extensive dealer network, the innovative way it maintains its market position and its strong fleet model line-up,

which includes the ecoFLEX green range, were behind the vote.”

maurice Howkins is Fleet Sales Director and the man at the helm of the fleet team. He couldn’t be more proud. He said: “The trophy belongs to every single one of the team for their hard work and excellent customer service day-in, day-out.”

and excellent customer service is one of the main reasons the trophy came to Vauxhall. independent research has shown that Vauxhall is number one for frequency of personal contact with customers and

prospects. and Vauxhall has the best test drive programme, too. it certainly

doesn’t surprise Bob. He said: “i’ve been in fleet for 15 years and customers consistently say that we’re by far the most responsive manufacturer and it’s great to have that confirmed with this award.”

Managing Director Duncan Aldred presents Maurice Howkins and The Fleet team with a special EXCITE award for their achievement

add a great dealer network and a great product range and Vauxhall really does have the winning formula. maurice said: “The insignia has really changed our position in the market. it’s such a sophisticated car that it’s allowing us to compete in the more prestigious end of the market. it’s certainly our flagship product, and now great new products like astra and meriva are being launched to support it.”

The innovative ecoFLEX range is also a big hit with customers. “many of our fleet customers have stretching environmental targets,” said maurice. “We help them by providing efficient, safe and environmentally friendly transport solutions.”

“all the fleet team have worked hard to contribute to this award,” said maurice. “Everyone deserves to feel very proud – i know i am!”

Nine undergraduates at the Luton plant are teaching local children the intricacies of setting up a manufacturing facility. The local 10-11 year olds are having fun deciding where to site their factory, and then choosing the ideal layout and facilities for their manufacturing works.

Throughout the day, pupils are encouraged to use enterprise skills such as planning, communications and initiative.

The course is so successful that it’s been rolled out on a monthly basis at local primary schools.

In April, it was the turn of Sacred Heart Primary School’s year 6 pupils to try their hand at becoming manufacturing entrepreneurs. The groups had to decide whether to site their plant in the US, Malaysia, Japan or the UK and then work on the layout of the plant, constantly comparing their designs to that of the plant in Luton.

Corsa is set to put one lucky driver into its new Pop Art TV ad with the launch of Pop Art idol. Not to be outdone, Vauxhall employees have been creating Pop Art masterpieces of their own photos thanks to some clever software on Facebook.

Employees who pop arted their image were in with the chance of winning a canvas of their photos. The votes have all been counted and the winner is… Retail Network Planner James Allred.

James said of his win: “I’m very happy and I know that some of my colleagues entered too – so it was good to beat them!”

What advice would he give to inspiring pop artists out there? “Whatever you do, make it bold, fun and bright – that way your picture will stand out from the rest.”

They decided where to locate the press shop, paint shop, body shop and general assembly. Safe walking areas and service facilities were also included – and then it was time to get a bit more creative.

Every group chose to provide their plant with a more personal attraction and so a swimming pool, football pitch and even a rest room providing massages found their place next to the working areas.

HR Advisor, Luke Waddy, is one of the undergraduates running the project. He said: “This project has been extremely enjoyable and creates an exciting atmosphere for all involved. The project teaches the children about global issues as well as engineering and we have been delighted with their engagement and creativity. Secretly, I think we’d all like to work in a plant with a swimming pool, football pitch and massage area!”

May’s award goes to Martin Oke, CV Development Manager, who spent three weeks with our logistics service provider at the Renault plant in France, sorting out a problem affecting parts holding up the manufacturing process of the first 400 new Movanos.

Martin took on the responsibility to ensure that vehicles passed through to the sales team on time. Despite not being able to speak French, he was able to connect with all the necessary people and as a result of his intervention, all the GME operations received their launch vehicles on time.

£7,500THE AMOUNT RAISED BY LEE’S EVENT

The Jane Lowe memorial Day fundraising football event has raised £7,500 for the Hospice of the good Shepherd at Ellesmere Port.

amanda LeBretton, Fundraising and marketing manager, says: “This is an absolutely fantastic achievement, £7,500 will go a long way within the Hospice and will help ensure that the important work carried out by the nurses continues to help the local community”.

The event was organised by Lee mcDonnell, from Ellesmere Port’s Body Shop in memory of his sister-in-law Jane who was nursed at the Hospice before her death in august 2009. Lee said: “Jane was a single mum to 12-year-old Faye, and my partner, Sarah, is Jane’s sister. Sadly, two years ago Jane was

diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and it soon became clear that she wouldn’t recover. During Jane’s final weeks, Sarah and Faye spent most of their time at the Hospice, where the nurses were incredibly kind and caring. When Jane died, Sarah and i brought Faye into our family and thought we should do whatever we could to raise money for the Hospice, that’s when i came up with the idea of a charity football match.”

Luckily, Lee has plenty of sporting contacts to call on and before long Tranmere Rovers Legends, marine Legends, King arms FC and Vauxhall motors FC had signed up to take part in this event. Former Wrexham, Liverpool and Wales football star Joey Jones was also there to back the event, alongside Tranmere Legends Eric nixon, ian muir and Dave Challinor who played in the matches. Lee pulled on a Tranmere Rovers Legends shirt and they won the day 4-0. Lee said: “it was a fantastic event, followed by a really entertaining evening with comedians, singers,

an auction and a raffle. i would like to say a big thank-you to everyone who donated and helped support this very worthwhile cause, especially Chris Camden, mick Jones, Steve Fualks, Tommy Curran and Dave mcDonnell. Jane would have been so proud.”

The Luton plant played host to a visit of nine local foster children at Easter. gary Cain, Vehicle Conversion Centre manager, arranged the visit to help looked-after children learn more about vehicle manufacturing.

He said: “my wife and i have two grown-up sons and we foster two boys aged 14 and nine.

VAN-TASTIC We really hope they stay with us long-term. it’s an arduous – but important – process to be vetted and approved for fostering but it’s so rewarding. a lot of the children are interested in vehicles so i offered to take a group round the plant.”

“They loved it,” said gary. “The robots were the highlight of the visit and the children were also fascinated to see the marriage process in general assembly. Who knows? maybe one day, they’d like to come and work at Vauxhall.”
