The Rector’s Musings

I want to begin by saying how very glad my husband Tim and I are to be joining the church communities of St. Mary’s Whitechapel and Trinity, Lancaster! We are looking forward to getting to know the traditions, activities, and people of each church, and to being in worship with you all.

In the two weeks following the conclusion of my ministry at Grace, Tim and I took one week to go to Florida to visit my only uncle, who is 92 years old and has faced some health challenges this winter. We were glad to get away for the week, and to have a break and change of scene after the emotion of saying goodbye to Grace Church. I am glad to say we found Uncle Bill in improved health and very glad for a visit. And it was wonderful to be in Florida and to enjoy the palm trees and sunshine!

I am grateful to begin my call to St. Mary’s and Trinity as we begin the season of Lent. To begin our ministry together with the words of Ash Wednesday close at hand, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”, words that remind us both of our mortality, and remind us of our call to act now, to do God’s work here on earth, to bring God’s love to a hurting and broken world. I can’t think of a better place for us to begin together, and I greatly looking forward to our ministry together in this corner of God’s world!

Starting with the End in Mind

The end of Rev. Ron Okrasinski’s term as Interim Rector at the churches of St. Mary’s Whitechapel and Trinity in Lancaster will take place the end of February. Fr. Ron has served the two yoked churches for the past 13 months. He started his term with a plan and an eye toward the eventual outcome.

During his interview for the position he was careful to set expectations on what an Interim Rector can be expected to accomplish. In retrospect, he exceeded those expectations as he brought new ideas, different methods and a refreshment in purpose for the two churches. Here at the end it’s easier to see what he had in mind.

He worked to get the two churches to work closer and in more harmony. While we have always been respectful of one another he brought us together for church as well as personal matters. We do more together now and we are doing it with more enthusiasm. Who will forget the bus trip and his private service at the National Cathedral?

At the beginning, Fr. Ron was quick to point out he wasn’t perfect. His love of Notre Dame and Green Bay Packer football proved that to be true. His sermons always brought together parables and stories that even included his teams as well as Charlie Brown and many others. As Jesus himself did, Fr. Ron believed that these stories strengthened our grasp on what ‘s important in life, especially loving your fellow man.

As Dr. Megan Limburg takes the reins on March 1st as the permanent rector, she will find the results from Fr. Ron and the Rev. Torrance Harmon, who came before her. We wish Fr. Ron well in his new endeavors and his transition to a new flock that will enjoy his approach and creativity. SAINT MARY’S VESTRY MEETING – FEBRUARY 20, 2017

At the regular meeting of the Vestry, the following items were discussed:

It was reported that the guide for preplanning your funeral was distributed after the church service on February 19. Ron stressed the importance in saving your family the unnecessary burden of having to plan a service after your death. Extra copies of this guide can be obtained through the church office.

The engineering report concerning structural items that need to be addressed for preserving the church for the future. The Vestry will be asking for bids for the proposed repairs.

A revised budget for 2017 was approved to reflect the actual carry-overs and the final figures for the new Rector.

The Vestry decided that with a change in leadership, it was a good year to request on outside audit for 2016. In most years, an audit is performed by a parishioner following the Diocese’s guidelines.

The Parochial report is being completed and will be submitted to the Diocese.

A report is being prepared for the DuPont Foundation showing how the funds they provided to SMWC for helping those in need were used in 2016. SMWC will not be receiving these funds in the future as the Foundation has changed their funding plan.

Saint Mary’s Whitechapel welcomes our new Rector, the Reverend Doctor Megan Limburg. We are fortunate in having called such a capable and experienced Rector. Rev Limburg’s first service at SMWC will be the Ash Wednesday service. The Rite II Holy Eucharist service will begin at 12 noon

Rev. Limburg was Chaplain and counselor with Saint Christopher’s School in Richmond for 21 years and has been with Grace Episcopal as Associate Rector for the past three years.

Rev. Limburg is a graduate of the University of Virginia and received her Masters in Christian Education from the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. She then went on to receive her Doctorate of Ministry from the Baptist Theological Seminary of Richmond, Virginia.

She currently serves on the Board of Trustees, Church Schools of the Diocese of Virginia; the Foundation Board of Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury; as Fresh Start Facilitator for the Diocese of Virginia; and is a member of the Lancaster Ministerial Association.

She and her husband the Rev. Tim Limburg live in Kilmarnock. He is a retired Presbyterian minister.

Please plan on being in church for the Ash Wednesday service and for the Sunday, March 5, 11:15 service to welcome Megan and Tim to our family.

After the Sunday service, they will be available during coffee hour to chat, but do share them with others and give them a chance to eat.

We will certainly miss Ron and want him to realize all that he has done for us during this past year. We thank him for having put up with us, and wish him every success in his new assignment. We hope that if his new parish plans a trip to visit the Cathedral, they will include us.

The Community of the River Road Food Pantry

In previous articles about the River Road Food Pantry (RRFP), I’ve written about the “community” that this outreach ministry has become. This month I’d like to tell you what that means to me on a deeply personal level.

As most know, for the past year my father, Dan Carlton, lived at Commonwealth Senior Living at Farnham. Dad had Alzheimer’s which is a long, cruel disease. While Alzheimer’s is what he had, it wasn’t totally who he was. His sense of humor and his love of people was evident throughout the disease and both showed when he worked at the RRFP.

Even before he lived at Farnham, Bill and I would bring Dad down to visit for a few days to give my Mom a break. These visits often coincided with Food Pantry week. His pantry “work” typically consisted of helping me prepare the volunteer luncheon the day before and then chatting with both volunteers and clients while enjoying lunch on pantry day. Dad loved the people and always said how nice everyone was. Afterwards he would complain to my mom and sisters that I worked him too hard! But each time I’d mention that Pantry Day was coming up, he’d always say that he was free to help out - if I needed him!

Dad loved the community of the RRFP. He loved the sense of helping those in need. He also loved sharing food - the “communion” of sharing the gifts of God for the people of God. As his world was getting smaller, Dad felt like he mattered when he worked at the pantry. Volunteers and clients alike would talk to Dad and ask him how he was doing. While it was a small kindness on their part, to him it was everything. It made him feel like he was a valued part of the community.

In January, Dad got severely dehydrated and had to be hospitalized for several days. Because of his confusion, my sisters and I took turns staying overnight with him. On my night to stay, I was sitting in the dark when I heard a voice say, “Jannine?” I immediately recognized the voice as one of our volunteer/clients at the RRFP. She was the CNA assigned to my father’s room for the night. She asked if I was staying and when I said yes, she said she’d get me a more comfortable chair so I could rest better. In spite of my insistence that I was fine, she pushed a huge, plush recliner into the room. She situated it so I could recline next to Dad’s bed in a way that I would wake when he woke up. Her kindness and thoughtfulness was appreciated more than words could express. If not for the RRFP, I’d never have known this wonderful woman!

Once Dad was discharged back to Farnham under Hospice care, my sisters and I tried to stay each night to provide him with the care he needed. This quickly proved to be too much for all of us and we hired two LPNs to sit with Dad from 7pm-7am so that he was never alone. As I was talking to one of the young ladies, it turned out that she was the niece of one of our faithful volunteers from Hartswell Baptist Church! Another connection to the RRFP!

One day while I was sitting with my Dad, one of the Farnham aides told me how much she appreciated the RRFP. She said her paycheck wasn’t enough to cover all of her expenses and she was so grateful to receive food each month. I hadn’t known that she was a client as she often worked on pantry days so a relative picked up her food for her. It made me feel good to know that the RRFP was helping such a worthy person.

On January 25, my father passed away. The outpouring of love and support received from the RRFP Community of volunteers and clients is like nothing I ever would have expected. Some have stopped me in Walmart to say how sorry they were to hear of Dad’s passing and to share a hug or a memory of his “working” on pantry day.

While the RRFP is about providing food, it also provides a wonderful sense of community. Last month, we provided food to 87 families, or 262 individuals. In January, 94 families or 299 individuals received food. Numbers are easy. It’s easy to quantify how many people receive food. What you can’t place a number or value on is how many connections are made and how many lives are touched by the RRFP. I know this first hand. And I know that Dad, along with Iantha and Thelma, will be smiling down on the RRFP each pantry day!

What snack originated during Lent because it contains only flour, water

and salt?

In January 2017

the River Road Food Pantry, using the help of 32 volunteers,

served 262 individuals. 85 were children, 124 were adults,

and 53 were senior citizens.

LCMA Lenten Luncheons will begin Ash Wednesday (March 1).

All luncheons will be held at Kilmarnock Baptist Church on Church Street in Kilmarnock. Services begin at 12:00 noon each Wednesday through April 12, and will be followed by a luncheon in the fellowship hall. All are welcome to attend. According to Jane Fortin, St. Mary’s Whitechapel, Trinity, and Grace Churches will have duty on March 29, and will help serve, clean up, and make brownies. Volunteers from Trinity are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels April 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th (Mondays). The meals are available for delivery by 9:30am at Tartan Village in Kilmarnock, VA. Our route covers the area north of Kilmarnock from Good Luck Road to the area around St. Mary’s Whitechapel. The number of recipients and the route varies from month to month. A Marriage and a Baptism

Julian Peter Allen Cornwell and Elizabeth Pastena

City, where they both live. Liz is the daughter of

James Pastena and Kathi Stark of Putnam Valley,

New York.
