Page 3: The Respiratory System

First the body breathes in the air which is sucked through the nose or mouth and down through the trachea (windpipe). The trachea is a pipe shaped by rings of cartilage. It divides into two tubes called bronchi. These carry air into each lung.

Page 4: The Respiratory System

Ten interesting facts 1.The right lung is just a bit bigger than the left lung.2.Women and children have a faster breathing rate than a man3.Our air gets warmed up and cleaned by the hairs in the nose4.When someone is asleep they breath about 12 to 15 times a minute.5.The highest recorded speed of a sneeze travelling is 165 kilometres an hour. WOW THAT’S PRETTY FAST!!!

Page 5: The Respiratory System

6,We lose about a half a litre of water a day from breathing.7,The surface area of people’s lungs is as big as a tennis court.

8.The capillaries in the lungs would extend 1,600 kilometres if placed end to end 9.Inside the lung, the tubes divide into smaller and smaller tubes called bronchioles.

10.At the end of each of these tubes are small air balloons called alveoli.

Last few questions ……

Page 11: The Respiratory System

The trachea……

The TracheaThe Trachea also known as the wind pipe is used to pass air that is breathed in through the nose or mouth into the lungs. The diagram below shows the

Trachea.

Page 12: The Respiratory System

The Lungs…….The lungs are two vital organs

in the respiratory systemAir is breathed in and the

trachea pumps the oxygen that goes into the lungs and carbon dioxide goes out. The lungs are

also shown on the diagram below

Lung cancerSymptoms of lung cancer are varied depending upon where and how widespread the tumour is. Warning signs of lung

cancer are not always present or easy to identify. A person with lung cancer may have the following kinds of symptoms

1.Swelling in the throat. 2.Change from your normal cough.

3.A hoarse voice. 4.You loss weight easily.

5.You loose your hunger for food. 6.You may notice blood in your phlegm.

How to prevent lung cancer

You should go in for checks every now and then if it is common in your family or if you have any of the symptoms of it. Another way to prevent it is not to smoke or be around smokers. If you have been diagnosed with lung cancer, be sure to follow your doctor's instructions about calling when you have problems, new symptoms, or symptoms that get worse.
