Martha Warford, Executive Director

At this time of year, people take time to reflect on their lives and evaluate the events, activities and accomplishments of the past year. Many times this reflection leads to the realization that volunteerism and charitable donations were not priorities. This prompts many to get involved now during the holidays. The involvement focuses on one’s favorite charity, whether it is a church, school or other entity. For many, their charity of choice is Beverly Farm.

We would like Beverly Farm to be your favorite charity. We have been providing 24 hour care to individuals in need for more than 100 years. The Board of Directors and I have been reaching out to parents, siblings and other relatives of those who live here to remind them of the care provided to their loved one and how we strive to go above providing care but also providing a great place to live.

Volunteering and charitable giving are both excellent ways to give back to the community here at Beverly Farm, as well as provide opportunities to “pay it forward.” These unselfish acts lead to personal satisfaction and the “feel good” experience.

Not only do our residents benefit from your giving, they are also involved in their own giving and paying it forward. For example, they recycle aluminum cans and ring the bells for the Salvation Army. They do this with cheerful hearts and experience their own “feel good” moments.

We are grateful when people come together to volunteer with us. By making Beverly Farm your charity of choice and making it a priority throughout the year, your reflection at this time next year will result in pride and that “feel good” feeling knowing that you have made a difference. We’re Better Together!

Thank you.Martha Warford

What Would You Do with $3,000? The River Bend Growth Association is an extremely popular organization in our community. Throughout the years, the RBGA has hosted numerous luncheons, business after-hour gatherings, seminars and opportunities for local businesses to share information about themselves. Beverly Farm is always respectfully included in these exciting events.

Recently, the RBGA has begun an ongoing event for local nonprofit organizations where the organizations are invited to participate. The event revolves around the Young Adults Committee (a group of 10 high school students from five different schools in the community) who will be volunteering their time at several of the organizations in order to narrow the decision down to one organization who will receive $3,000.00 from the RBGA.

A total of 30 organizations were originally selected to present a five minute presentation as to why their organization deserves to win this contest and what they will do with the winnings if they are selected. Out of the 30 presentations, the students narrowed it down to a final five who will move forward to potentially win the $3,000.00.

Beverly Farm Foundation is happy to announce that we were selected to move forward into the top five organizations. Not only is BFF on track to winning $3,000.00, this opportunity is also promoting our volunteer program.

Once the students from Alton High School, Marquette Catholic High School, East Alton Wood River High School, Roxana High School and Civic Memorial High School selected the top five organizations, each school then chose who they wanted to donate their time to for a volunteer experience. Students from Alton High School selected BFF as the organization they desired to volunteer with.

The students’ volunteer experience at each organization is what determines who wins this contest. They will gather their opinions and thoughts on their experience and share it with the other students to select the winning organization.

Not only are the students judging the organizations to determine a recipient of the $3,000.00, the organizations are asked to do the same. Each organization must judge their students’ performance and communication experience for a chance for one of the 10 students to win a $3,000.00 scholarship themselves.

If Beverly Farm is chosen to be this year’s recipient, the money will be used towards the Art Program. At this time, our art program offers painting, coloring, and drawing with different mediums.

With the winnings from this contest the residents would be able to broaden their artistic abilities. The money would go to purchasing a camera, oil pastels and even tools for clay sculpting. The variety of art supplies will allow each individual to express themselves in different ways that they have not been able to do before.

The winner of the RBGA and Young Adults Committee contest will be announced in April. Throughout that time, the students will be on and off of campus assisting our residents with artwork that displays views of “their home,” Godfrey, IL.

If you or someone you know may be interested in volunteering to help out with our Art Program, please call the Resource Development Coordinator, Taylor Gibbs, at 618-466-0367 at extension 649 for further details.

Thanks for Giving The residents and staff are always grateful for the support (fiscally and/or physically) that we receive from our donors and volunteers. It is exciting when we are presented a chance to give back. The residents stay busy throughout the year by volunteering with other non-profit organizations in the River-Bend and Greater St Louis area. In the spring, we head over to Children’s Hospital to plant flowers. This not only brings smiles to our residents but to the patients, visitors, family members and staff at the hospital.

We also do our part to help recycle. As part of the Day Training program’s day-to-day business, they shred papers; when we get enough, our residents and staff deliver the bags of shredded papers to our local 5A Humane Society for them to use in their kennels.

BFF once again was a part of the Alton Knights of Columbus annual Tootsie Roll drive this year. Beverly Farm is one of the five nonprofit agencies that benefit from the proceeds of the drive. This year we greeted shoppers outside of Schnuck’s in Alton to fill our cans.

This is the first year that we participated in Old Newsboy Day. Several staff stood on streets in Alton “hawking” newspaper to benefit local charities in the Greater St Louis area.

Cold temperatures do not deter our giving spirit to say the least. We did our part as Salvation Army Bell Ringers as well as assisted with the ever popular Toys for Tots toy drive campaign.

These are just a few ways that we like to express our gratitude to those who support us and other nonprofit agencies. If you have any suggestions for other ways that we can be a part of giving back please do not hesitate to call.

Fall, Family, Friends, and Fun!

Fall Family Weekend, held at the end of September, was a huge success! Family and friends arrived at Beverly Farm from across the United States in order to take part in the special event. The weekend consisted of a variety of activities, meetings, and memories for the family, friends and residents of Beverly Farm. The Board of Directors met throughout the weekend to discuss topics ranging from fundraising ideas to resident activities and everything in between. Parents, guardians, family members, and friends were able to take advantage of this time to attend a variety of informative meetings as well as the opportunity to meet and connect with one another and various staff members.

Aside from the various meetings, friends and families were able to visit with their loved ones at Beverly Farm. This is a time that is cherished and valued by our residents. Many took this opportunity to display what they have been working on or have accomplished throughout the year. For some, this included a painting completed during time spent in activities, a keychain put together at our Day Training program or something they helped with in their home. This is a time for them to take pride and show off the life they have built here. The highlight of the weekend for many took place Saturday evening with TLC & Company’s Fall Variety Show. The show incorporated the many talents of the residents and staff and was enjoyed by all!

Be sure to mark your calendars for the Spring 2016 Family Weekend at the end of April!
