October 2020
The Red Flame Messenger
Dear Church:
We are several months into this pandemic. We have successfully launched two new
ministries, re started in person worship, and confirmed 5 teenagers. Church may look
different, but we are still here, and working in partnership with God to reach our
community and world with message of the Gospel.
Beginning on October 11 we will return to indoor, in person worship. It will look different.
There will be marked spots for seating, and a limit of 63 people in attendance. We ask that
you keep 6 feet between you and people who are not part of your household. That means
no hugging, shaking hands, or other forms of personal contact. You must wear a mask.
There will be no bulletins, or singing, only one person may use the bathroom at a time. We
will not have coffee following worship, and we cannot linger inside for conversation. We
will still offer worship through our Facebook page.
That may seem like a long list of “no’s” but the purpose is to keep us from spreading
COVID 19. As always please continue to pray for an end to the pandemic. Reach out to
friends and neighbors to check on their well-being, and if you are comfortable help a
working family with school aged children.
We live in a complex time, but we follow a God who promises to fix what is broken about
our world. As followers of Christ remember to hold onto to this hope. Let us practice
compassion, and patience with each other as we face the new challenges that this pandemic
brings. Pray for those who are working, and those who are not. Pray for teachers, students,
and decision makers. As always, keep praying, keep hoping, and keep faith in God.
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Kate

On September 27, the confirmands of the Eden United Methodist church
were finally able to complete a process interrupted by COVID 19. They
have been waiting since early Spring to celebrate the occasion.
It was a perfect fall day. The temperature was just right, and the sun
shined brightly as the church gathered for worship. The confirmands
professed their faith before the congregation and began their journey as
full members of the church.
Spaced 6 feet apart under the EUMC portico, (left to right) are Alyssa and
Connor Johnson, Julia LeBaron, Pastor Kate Nicol, and Matthew and
Mitchel Schnaufer.
Congratulations to the Eden UMC
Confirmation Class of 2020!
Welcome Autumn! I love October with the colorful leaves, the apples, pumpkins and crisp air. It is a sensory reminder of God’s amazing work.
The 2020-2021 UMW Program Book will be ready soon. (My fault, not Robin!) Carol Brodie, Diana Graovac and I have had Covid cleaning training, so meetings can be held in the Fellowship Hall with social distancing using the marked spots at tables, or in the circle of chairs. A list of attendees and health questionnaire must be turned in to the office after each event. Masks must be worn inside, and food cannot be served. When the meeting is over, please leave and do extra visiting in the parking lot so that cleaning can be done. Thank you for your understanding during these difficult pandemic times as our church follows the county health department guidelines. And pray for an effective vaccine.
Trunk or Treat is coming up on Saturday, October 17. The Eden Chamber sponsors a Halloween parade starting at the Fire Hall. There will be 5 groups limited to 30 each. The first group will start at the Fire Hall at 11:00, parade up to the cemetery, then back to the church parking lot for treats. The other groups will start on the hour at 12:00, 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00. There will be a sign up for people interested in decorating their car or truck and providing treats. The town has limited the total number to 50 per group, including volunteers, parents and kids. The Chamber has asked us to limit our volunteers to 6. We can double up, with 1 person supervising 2 cars, then switching out halfway through.
Are you on Face Book? Join our Face Book page to share information about our programs: “Eden NY United Methodist Women.”
Election Day Dinner planning has begun! This year will be take-out only. Linda Hock will be looking for limited hands to help with this endeavor! Watch for sign-up sheets or calls.
The District UMW is sponsoring a Zoom book study on Saturday, November 7 at 10:00. So You Want to Talk about Race by Ijeoma Oluo. Let me know if you want to attend, and I will send you a Zoom invite. At the District UMW Annual Meeting on September 19th, our unit received the Mission Today Silver Award and the 5 Star Award for mission giving. Also Dawn Zopp and I received the Reading Program certificate.
The next board meeting will be October 5, 2020 at 3:00pm in the Church Hall or out at the picnic tables, depending on weather.
Joy and Peace, Cathy Jeffers
The town Halloween Parade starts at 11:00 at the Eden Fire Hall. This year the parade will be divided into 5
groups in order to limit the number of people according to Covid guidelines. We will be decorating trunks or
trucks and distributing candy to the kids. If you would like to join the fun, please contact me
([email protected]) or Robin in the church office (992-4211). We can use decorated vehicles and extra
wrapped candy! Unfortunately, this year we must limit the number of volunteers in the parking lot. I hope we
can double up, with 1 person supervising 2 vehicles, perhaps trading half way through. The parade groups
should be arriving at the church parking lot at about 11:30, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30.
*If you would like to donate wrapped treats, please contact the church office at 992-4211*

Sunday School: Sunday School has begun! The LiFT class had 7 people on Sept.
27th. We sat at tables in family groups wearing our masks. We read and discussed
Exodus 14. Do you know what happens to a bowl of water with pepper sprinkled
on it when you add one drop of soap? Try it at home.
We will continue to collect coins for the Heifer Project on second Sundays and food
for the Eden/North Collins Food Pantry on the fourth Sundays.
Blessing Box
We just received a $300 grant from the Upper New York
Conference UMW to purchase supplies for our Blessing
Box. Thank you all for your continued donations. The school
supplies added in September were well received.
We are trying a new process to assure the cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items reach those who need them.
Supplies can be requested by completing a list Contained in the Box. We will gather what’s needed and will contact you to let you know when they’re available for pick up. We will be checking for requests several times a week.
As always, please contact the church office at 992-4211 or [email protected] for urgent requests.
October is Rada Cutlery Month
As I normally do, I am taking orders for Rada products during the month of
October so that you will receive them before the holidays. Rada makes the
best knives for the price. They hold their edge and last for years. Rada also
sells mixes, soups, spices and a host of other kitchen products. Below is a link
to their catalog. If you do not have a computer please feel free to call me and I
will arrange to drop a catalog off to you.
Please call me after you have decided what you would like. If you do not
have my phone number please call the office for it. 992-4211. All proceeds
from the sales goes to the UMW for their projects and mission work.

Thank you to Mission Workers
September was a busy month for missions between donations for Undie Sundays, the
Crop Walk, and our Blessing Box. A huge thank you to those who participated and gave
so freely.
Though collection of items were down this
year, because of the COVID will still had a large
bag of new undies for Churches in Action.
Donations went to Bread of Life, St. Peter’s &
Paul, The Trading Post, St, Luke's Mission,
Friends of the Night People, Peace House,
Response and The City Mission. Thanks to all
who donated money and items. CIA ended up
sorting around $10,000 worth of new underwear,
socks, bras, and other items!
Eden UMC walkers collected $933.20 and with St. Paul’s the total is $1,434.40! This is
more than we collected last year. Virtual walkers were very pleased with walking at
their own pace and distance. Some got out of their comfort zones and took walks on
the beach or in the woods, or challenged themselves by walking several days. Thank
you to all who participated by walking and donating!
This month has been extraordinary for the accomplishments of the
WWC!
It all began because our “St. George” who faithfully waters and weeds
the the flowers on the church grounds, was knocked out of
commission from a very scary auto accident. The team immediately
volunteered to pitch in and substitute for George. Not only watering
and weeding took place but crew members cultivated and edged,
planted new flowers, and raked up after the squirrels so the lawn could
be mowed. Power washing took place in needed areas and the
memorial bricks were sealed, bringing new life to their appearance.
Best news yet, St. George has reenlisted!
Kudos to the WWC (Weeding Watering Crew) And many thanks!

Carol and Tom Lewis, Ruth Bucki, Nancy and John Parsons.
Also, a shout out to Walter O’Conner & John Parsons for a new roof over the garbage corral.
Lookin’ sharp! Michelle Wilson
I plant a flower because when it blooms I see as face, one that looks
up at you and smiles. Nothing warms a heart faster than a warm
wonderful smile, and it reflects God's love even when it rains.
To all of you that helped to care for them this year, i say thank you
from the bottom of my heart. This was and is another great
example of how people can come together not only as humans but
Christians as well.
Again THANK YOU all ever so much. Your Friend in Christ, Phil
Congratulations and Best Wishes to

Finance/Stewardship News
It’s that time of year again when we begin to discuss the spiritual benefits and practice of giving to
God from all that He has blessed us with. But given the unexpected, prolonged and fluid impacts of a
pandemic, your Finance/Stewardship team is considering how to adapt what we usually do to meet
our extraordinary circumstances. The economic reality of the pandemic puts pressure on our individ-
ual commitments that we could never have anticipated at this time last year. Please be on the look-
out for communications around this in the near future in emails, from the pulpit, and on the website.
Please be thinking: what is God calling me to do?
