As many rabbis do, I often begin afuneral service with the recitationof the 23rd Psalm, “e Lord is
My Shepherd.” It is probably the bestknown of all the Psalms and is attributed
to King David, thought to be written toward the end of hislife. is Psalm is loved by Jews and Christians alike, for itspeaks of God’s individual care for each human being, notingin particular God’s protection in the face of death. Being thatit is also a prayer we will recite at the Passover Yizkor service onTuesday, April 2 and again at the Shavuot Yizkor service onursday, May 16 I thought I would share just a glimpse intothe deeper meaning of this Psalm.
Psalm 23 is a Pilgrims’ song most likely recited by thosegoing up to Jerusalem for a religious festival. In ancient timesGod is described here as the Shepherd who assures the Pilgrima safe journey, secure passage and protection against evil forcesalong the way. Psalm 23 expresses ultimate trust in God whileoffering idyllic images of green pastures and quiet streams thatcan create a feeling of calm within us. We are assured that thereis no reason to fear for God provides all that we could ever wantor need.
Psalm 23 asserts that Almighty will accompany us throughdeath’s dark “valley” and bring us safely to the other side –whether it is the World to Come in the next life or consolationand acceptance in this one. With God’s guidance, the Psalmistaffirms that we have nothing to fear.
ankfully the ‘valley’ is not where we live – it is a place weonly visit from time to time- in moments of sadness, lonelinessand isolation, often after suffering a loss of a loved one. Indeed, there are moments – sometimes days – when we feel aban-doned, out of control, alone, overwhelmed with anxiety, and aslow as we can be. Being empty and afraid, we think that wehave nowhere to turn. But just when we feel trapped in the“valley” of deepest darkness, the Psalmist urges us not to fearour situation because we are truly never alone.
In short, Psalm 23 bids us and even begs us – to try andturn the page, emerge, reach out and… reach up! As such, inthe months to come, may we emerge from those moments ofstruggle feeling a greater sense of connectedness to God and toone another. In this way, Susan, Atara, Micah and Elan joinme in wishing you both external and internal peace and whole-ness in the days ahead!
Psalm 23: The Lord is My ShepherdRabbi Joseph H. Krakoff [email protected] • Twitter: @rabbikrakoff
Each time I sit down to prepare mythoughts for the Recorder, I am re-minded of my seminary days and the
rabbinical students who dug through pilesof old synagogue newsletters, looking for
material to use in their rabbinical theses about one “significant”rabbi or another. And of course, in our own Shaarey Zedekarchives we have quite a collection of newsletters and other printmaterials gathered as a tribute to the ages. So, while I am hardlya “significant” rabbi, I can’t help but think when I compose thesecommunal addresses, “What kind of legacy do I want to leave?”I have similar thoughts, by the way, with my own children eachtime I tuck them in at night, or bless them on Shabbat and theholidays.
In fact, it’s an interesting question each of us must answer:When our time is up on this earth, what kind of legacy do wewant to leave? What do we want our family and friends to sayabout us when our time has passed? For some, their legacy is se-cured by an “ethical will.” An ethical will is a document inwhich you write down your prayers, hopes, lessons, and wis-dom for those who come after you. e ethical will is an op-
portunity to share your innermost thoughts and feelings—yourdesires for those you love—without having to hope that yourfamily and friends “understood.” For all of us, our legacy is se-cured by the mitzvot we’ve done: reaching out to the poor andneedy; strengthening of our synagogue community; sharingShabbat and holiday celebrations with family.
We are in the midst of the counting of the Omer, whichbegan on the second night of Passover. On the 50th day ofcounting, this year the evening of May 14, we begin the holidayof Shavuot. Shavuot marks the giving of the Torah to the Jew-ish people: the transmission of law and lore, wisdom and com-passion, from one generation to another. e Torah and itsinterpretations represent the legacy of our ancestors—the teach-ings and laws they hoped we would learn, embrace, and prac-tice. To it we must add our own understandings as well andensure that we pass it on to future generations.
During this season in which we celebrate the transmission ofSacred Scripture from one generation to another, let us be surethat we share with the next generation our own personal wis-dom, priorities, passions, and commitment to Judaism. Yourlegacy—and the legacy of the Jewish people—depend on it.

COHEN’SCORNER
All good things must come to an end. The past twoyears have flown by and I can honestly say not only
have I grown in so many ways, but I have also made somany wonderful friends from my experience as Sisterhoodpresident. Thank you for giving me the opportunity tolead this dynamic organization and for supporting Sister-hood and me when I called you for help. I could not havedone this without the help of my wonderful board andpast presidents. Thank you all!
During the past two years, we have laughed andlearned together. We have had interesting educationclasses with Cantor Finkelstein, Breast Cancer doctors,Hebrew literacy taught by our very own Sisterhood mem-bers, cooking demonstrations by Annabel Cohen, amixology lesson, two active book clubs, and a mikvahclass with Rebecca Starr. We’ve had two exotic intoxicat-ing Vashti Banquets, Torah Fund lunches, a fashion show, and a Girls’ Pamper Night out. We collaborated with theshul to initiate the first Game Day, cooked amazingkugels, helped facilitate our weekly “Ruach Central” com-munity Shabbat lunch, and Yom Tov observances. Ofcourse, there is also our premier fundraiser, the LoisLinden Nelson Woman’s World with shopping, lunch, and a stimulating speaker! We have donated to at least 20different charities either in the community or Israel, sentour college students a small gift for Chanukah, sponsoredJARC and Jewish Vocational Service lunches, helped achild go to camp, delivered Yad Ezra groceries to those inneed, and helped start an Egalitarian Young Adult Fridaynight Minyan. We just purchased a beautiful newcommercial dishwasher for our kitchen and we are mostexcited about our next gift to the synagogue, a state-of-the-art sound system for the sanctuary.
I look forward to seeing you at our Lois Linden NelsonWoman’s World event on May 1 to hear chief CNNWhite House Correspondent, Jessica Yellin, and Sister-hood Shabbat on May 11. On May 28, we will welcomeour new incoming president, Robin Lash with a beautifulinstallation program. Mazel tov to Robin! We are so proudto have you as our next leader!
Thank you all once again!Linda

what haPPeNs afteR we die? aNsweRs, (MoRe) questioNs, aNd discussioNWith Rabbi Aaron Starrursdays, April 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2, 911:15 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
ere is no question more central to life, perhaps, than what happens when it ends. Many grewup learning little to nothing about what Judaism teaches regarding the afterlife. Why? What doesJudaism teach about Heaven and Hell; the nature of the soul; bodily resurrection, the messianicera, communing with the dead; the importance to the deceased of kaddish; and why are manyliberal Jews—even rabbis—afraid to discuss it?
