Dr. DuVal's resignation became effective on Dec. 15.He will return to the University of Arizona Col- lege of Medicine, where he had served as Dean since 1964. Details of the chemical structure, including the precise sequence of the amino acids in the active por- tion of the human parathyroid hor- mone, were reported in the Decem- ber issue of Proceedings of the Na- tional Academy of Sciences by Drs. H. Bryan Brewer, Jr., Thomas Tumor Institute, Houston, Tex., at a National Cancer Institute-spon- sored rehabilitation conference at Dulles, Dec. 4-8, 1972. Joseph M. Albrecht Dies;Former NCI Section Head

Joseph M. Albrecht, former headof the National Cancer Institute'sPathological Technology Section,died Nov. 21 in Kailua Kona, Ha-waii, where he had lived since hisretirement in 19<69.

Mr. Albrecht served as a con-sultant to the NCI staff on thetechnique of preparing tissues formicroscopic diagnosis.

He developed new procedures forpreparing laboratory specimens,handling tissue-culture material indiffusion chambers, and cutting un-fixed, undecalcified frozen bone.

Before joining NCI, he was alab technician at Washington Uni-versity School of Medicine's De-partment of Anatomy in St. Louis.

Mr. Albrecht had attended theUniversity of Minnesota and Wash-ington University.

He is survived by his wife, Jane.

Because she proposed a new type ofform to simplify the ordering of officeand lab supplies, Helen C. Jenerick,Laboratory of Biochemical Pharma-cology, NIAMDD, received a $50 cashemployee suggestion award. Dr. Lucius Badger Dies;Was Asst. Director. NIH

Dr. Lucius F. Badger, assistantdirector of NIH from 1942 to 1948,died recently in Suburban Hospital.

Dr. Badger w a s commissionedinto the Public Health Service in1921, and soon after became chiefmedical officer of the Leprosy In-vestigation Station in Honolulu.

Later posts included director ofleprosy investigation for PHS atNIH, regional medical officer forIndian services in the PHS Atlantaoffice, and director of the leprosycontrol section of the Communica-ble Disease Center in Atlanta, aposition he held until his retire-ment in 1957. Dr. Badger wrotenumerous publications on typhusfever, leprosy, and Rocky Mountainspotted fever.

He leaves a daughter, MargaretBadger, Clinical Center administra-tive officer, and three sisters.

The family suggests expressionsof sympathy in the form of contri-butions to the Leonard Wood Lep-rosy Foundation, 2430 PennsylvaniaAvenue, Washington, D.C.

CFC Reaches 86.2% of Goal; 5 NIH'ers Honored

Dr. Jackson to Speak at SickleCell Disease Program Seminar

The NIH EEO coordinators aresponsoring a seminar on the Na-tional Sickle Cell Disease Program,Thursday, Jan. 11, at 12 noon inthe Masur Auditorium.

Dr. Rudolph E. Jackson, nationalcoordinator for the SOD Program,will speak at the meeting. Dr.Jackson is chief of the SCDBranch, NHLI.

The seminar is open to all em-ployees.

Dr. Eugene Braunwald, former clinicaldirector and chief of the CardiologyBranch, NHLI, received the AmericanHeart Association's Research Achieve-ment Award—an illuminated scrolland a $1,000 honorarium. He wascited as "an investigator . . . whosecontributions to cardiovascular physi-ology and clinical cardiology havebeen extraordinary." Dr. Braunwaldis Hersey Professor of the Theory andPractice of Physic at Harvard MedicalSchool.

The 1972-73 Combined Federal Campaign at NIH officially closedNov. 30, reaching 86.2 percent of its goal, and five NIH employeesreceived the first annual Secretary's Award for Outstanding Achieve-ment in the conduct of the cam-paign.

HEW Secy. Elliot L. Richardsonpresented the awards on Dec. 20 toJames A. Walsh, BHME, NIH co-ordinator; Dr. Stephen P. Hatchett,CFC chairman for DRG; Dr. MiloD. Leavitt, Jr., chairman for FIC'scampaign; Thomas C. Leffingwell,CFC coordinator for FIC, and Er-rett Straley, Jr., DRG coordinator.

The percentage attained exceedslast year's, but NIH contributionstotalling $216,285, were $1,087 shortof last year's mark. Confidentialdonations have not yet been addedto this total, however, and it isanticipated that the final tally willincrease.

Six groups attained virtually 100percent or more of their goal: FIC,BHME, NIGMS, DRG, OD, a n dNIAMDD.

Dr. Kenneth M. Endicott, BHMEDirector and vice chairman of theCFC, expressed his thanks for thegenerous contributions of NIH em-ployees and for "a job well done"by the keymen.

Father Guicheteau, CCMinistry Dept., Dies

The Rev. Armand Joseph Guiche-teau, S.J., Catholic chaplain to Clin-ical Center patients, died Decem-ber 12 at Holy Cross Hospital. Hehad been with the CC's SpiritualMinistry Department since 1964.

Father Guicheteau was ordainedin 1938 at Woodstock College.

During the early 1930's andagain during World War II, hetaught in the Philippines, and afterthe war taught physics and Frenchat St. Joseph's College High Schoolin Philadelphia.

In 1949, Father Guicheteau cameto this area as parish priest of St.Aloysius Church and Gonzaga Col-lege High School, Washington, D.C.

Later, h e taught theology atGeorgetown University where hewas also assistant director of ad-missions before coming to NIH.

Father Guicheteau resided atGeorgetown Preparatory School,Rockville, Md., where funeral serv-ices were held. A Mass was alsoheld on Dec. 15 in the CC chapel.

NIAMDD ReorganizesExtramural ProgramsInto 4 Subdivisions

A major reorganization at theNational Institute of Arthritis,Metabolism, a n d Digestive Dis-eases involves four new units.

Concurrent with the name changewhich gave more impetus to thedigestive disease area, NIAMDDreorganized the extramural re-search, research training, and de-velopment activities.

Eleven extramural categoricaldisease program areas are groupedinto four clusters. These are: Arth-ritis, Bone, and Skin Diseases; Dia-betes, Endocrine, and MetabolicDiseases; Digestive Diseases andNutrition, and Kidney, Urologic,and Blood Diseases.

Each of these four sub-divisionswill be headed by an associate di-rector responsible for a balancedprogram from fundamental re-search through demonstrations andstudy of improved therapies byclinical trials.

The programs will use bothgrant and contract research ap-proaches to achieve their goals.

Overall extramural programsupervision will be the responsibil-ity of Dr. Ronald W. Lamont-Hav-ers, appointed deputy director ofthe Institute last August.

In order to coordinate such ac-tivities as grants management andprocessing, the position of asso-ciate director for Extramural Pro-gram Activities has also been es-tablished.

The reorganization will take sev-eral months to complete but twoprograms have been put into oper-ation: Digestive Diseases and Nu-trition, with Dr. Lionel M. Bern-stein as associate director, and Ex-tramural Activities, with Dr. E. P.Offutt as associate director.

Intramural research will remainunder Dr. J. E. Rail, director ofIntramural Research.

Mail Service Section Aims at ReducingThe mail service at NIH handled 26,863,320 pieces of mail last

year—a 41 percent increase over the load distributed 4 years ago.In 1968, there were 72 employees in the mail room who routed

mail for 29 buildings and an NIH population of 11,000. Today, with11 less employees, the service handles mail for 33 buildings and12,700 workers.

Along with the increase in NIH's volume of mail over the years,postal rates for all mail classes have gone up 30 percent. Fiscal 1973postage costs (based on 1972 figures) for Bureaus, Institutes, andDivisions were estimated at over $1,145,000.

NIH—like all Government agencies—is not exempt from payingpostage. As a matter of fact, postage for each B/l/D is determinedby the number and type of indicia envelopes and labels obtainedfrom the self service stores.

All rates charged for letters up to and including large packagesare identical to those the public pays.

Of particular concern to the Mail Service Section is the reductionof mailing costs. Too many mistakes are occurring which drive mailcosts upward.

By following correct procedures for mailing correspondence,budget expenditures can be lowered in many instances.

On any given day, the mistakes illustrated on these two pages(except one) can be found in the mail room. Misaddressed or im-

Savings in the thousands of dollars in postage alone—nor to men-tion man hours—may be realized by following correct procedures.

The mail service would like to extend some helpful hints on howto process correspondence for mailing and reduce expenditures.

It costs 40 percent more to send letters air mail. Most first classmail gets air mail treatment by the U.S. Postal Service except forrelatively short distances where it is unnecessary.

Do not specify "Special Delivery" except in rare cases whereevening or weekend delivery is needed. It should only IW usedwhen speed is important.

Be specific in addressing inter-office mail. Envelopes arereceived in the mail room marked for "Susie—Payroll," or"J. Smith—Sixth floor," or something similar.

The mail room rehandles approximately 20,000 pieces of mis-addressed, mislabeled, and improperly packaged mail each monthwhich causes unnecessary delay.

Avoid using paper clips. They add weight, can damage mailhandling machinery, and tear envelopes.

Prepare mail as early in the day as possible. The Post Office picksup the mail at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Later mail becomes partof the evening rush and takes longer to be dispatched.

Outgoing postal mail is delivered directly to the City Post Officeafter a pre-sort by the mail room. Government mail put with per-sonal correspondence in mail chutes may be delayed up to 3 days.

For prompt delivery, always use Zip Codes. Also, all envelopesshould carry a return address including a Zip Code.

For specific cases, fourth class book rate mail can offer savings.Certain requirements must be met to qualify for fourth class, butsavings over first class can be substantial.

First class letters are allowed to weigh one full ounce. The USPSreports that most weigh less than one half an ounce. When sending"underweight" letters, consider consolidating some of them in thesame envelope, if possible.

Every consideration should be given to specify only the most eco-nomical class of mail to be used. The Mail Service Section can helpwith all mailing problems. Call Ext. 65651.

Israeli Scientists StudyRole of Cells in Body'sDefense Against Cancer

A multi-disciplinary cancer re-search program will be establishedat the Weizmann Institute of Sci-ence in Rehovot, Israel, under aresearch contract awarded by theNational Cancer Institute.

Several topics will be investi-gated by Weizmann scientists, in-cluding the roles of various whiteblood cells in the body's defenseagainst cancer, and methods thatmay include leukemia cells to ma-ture normally.

Feldman Heads StudiesStudies of treating cancer by en-

hancing the body's disease-fighting,or immune system, will be carriedout under t h e direction of Dr.Michael Feldman, head of the De-partment of Cell Biology.

Two groups of lymphocytes, thewhile blood cells that defend thebody against disease, will be stud-ied.

One type of cell is produced bythe thymus, an organ of the im-mune system located in the neckregion; such cells are known as T(thymus-derived) cells.

Related cells produced in thebone marrow are known as B (bonemarrow-derived) cells. Both T andB cells will be studied.Growth Interrupted

A study of mechanisms controll-ing the growth of mouse leukemiacells will be directed by Dr. LeoSachs, head of the Department ofGenetics.

In leukemia, the growth of whiteblood cells is interrupted beforethey are fully mature.

As a result, the leukemic cellscannot perform the protective func-tion of normal, mature white bloodcells, and leukemic patients fre-quently develop infections thathealthy persons could easily over-come. Dr. Sachs will investigateways in which leukemic cells maybe induced to develop normally.

Dr. Michael Sela, head of theDepartment of Chemical Immunol-ogy, will study the role of certainantigens, chemical substances lo-cated on the surfaces of cells, asa means of detecting cancer.

CEA Linked to CancerOne such antigen, the carcino-

embryonic antigen (CEA), hasbeen linked to cancers of the colonand rectum in man. Another isalphafetoprotein, which has beendetected in patients and in animalswith cancer of the liver.

Dr. Sela and his co-workers willtry to improve the sensitivity ofpresent tests for these antigens,and thereby increase their useful-ness in early detection of gastro-intestinal and liver cancers.

The team then synthesized thesingle-chain molecular fragment bystringing together the constituentamino acids in the proper sequence.Their animal tests have just con-firmed the biological activity of thisman-made peptide.

Parathyroid hormone is normallypresent in such small amounts—fresh parathyroid gland tissue con-tains only 50 parts per million asthe hormone—that hormone-secret-ing tumors obtained at surgerywere used as the source of hor-mone for these studies.

Yet, so uncommon a r e thesetumors, that 2 years' time and thecooperation of more than 150 in-stitutions and individual physiciansand surgeons in 12 countries wererequired to obtain the hundreds offrozen tumors needed for an ade-quate yield of hormone.

These glands were collectedworld wide by Dr. Claude Arnaudand colleagues at the Mayo Clinic.

Active purified fractions fromextracts of these glands were pre-pared by the Mayo Clinic team,from which Dr. Brewer and NHLIcolleagues were able to isolate 3.8milligrams of the pure human hor-mone—enough to determine t h eamino acid sequence of the biolog-ically active region of the hormone(the first 34 of the 84 amino acidscomprising the molecule).

Sequence determination was ac-complished by subjecting the iso-lated hormone to sequential degra-dations by the Edman techniquewhereby one amino acid at a timeis "cleaved" off the chain, andidentified by either gas chroma-tography or mass spectrometry.

NCI Names Dr. HollandTo Work in Soviet Union

Dr. James F. Holland, a special-ist in treating cancer by drugs,has been named to work in theSoviet Union for one year to helpcarry out the new U.S.-U.S.S.R.collaborative program on cancerdrugs.

Dr. Holland, the first U.S. sci-entist recruited for the joint pro-gram, is a past president of theAmerican Association for Cancer ^Research.

He is on leave of absence fromhis duties as Director of the Can-cer Clinical Research Center andchief of Medicine "A" at the Ros-well Park Memorial Institute inBuffalo, N.Y.

Dr. Holland began his stay inthe U-S.S.R. Nov. 5, accompaniedby his wife and five children.

He plans to study methods usedby Soviet scientists to develop andevaluate cancer drugs and will co-author scientific papers, organizeseminars on drug research, a n dhelp develop treatment programs *for gastro-intestinal cancers.

Consulting Firm Given ContractFor Study of Clinical Training

A contract has been awarded tothe consulting firm of Booz, Allen,and Hamilton to conduct a studyof the most common problems im-peding efficient and effective clini-cal training in allied health profes-sions and to make recommenda-tions for actions to overcome them.

The 14-month contract was givenby the Division of Allied HealthManpower, BHME.

Two Soviet ScientistsBegin Project in U.S.Under Co-op Program

The first two Russian scientiststo begin a specific project in theUnited States under the U.S.-U.S.S.R. Five-year Agreement fora Cooperative Program, recentlyleft the National Heart and LungInstitute after gathering informa-tion on the pathogenesis of arterio-sclerosis.

They are Professor H. N. Gerasi-mova, chief of the Laboratory ofBiochemistry, Myasnikov Instituteof Cardiology, t h e Academy ofMedical Sciences, Moscow, and Pro-fessor A. N. Klimov, head of theLaboratory of Biochemistry ofLipid Metabolism, Institute for Ex-perimental Medicine, the Academyof Medical Sciences, Leningrad.

The researchers are now travel-ing to several of the Institute'slipid clinics that are locatedthroughout the country. Later, theyplan to return to NIH for furtherconsultation.

Living Animal Cells Grown in CirculatoryNetwork Resemble Normal Body Tissue

NIH scientists have devised an artificial circulatory network thatallows them to grow living animal cells in the laboratory to a density thatresembles natural body tissue.

Drs. Richard A. Knazek and Pietro M. Gullino, National CancerInstitute; Dr. Peter 0. Kohler, Na-tional Institute of Child Health andHuman Development, and Dr. Rob-ert L. Dedrick, Division of Re-search Services, published a reportof their achievement in a recentissue of Science.

An application for a patent forthe device has been registered byNIH in the names of Drs. Knazek,Gullino, Dedrick, and Dr. WilliamR. Kidwell, NCI. Under Federalpatent policy, rights to the devicewill remain in the public domain.

With current methods, manytypes of human and animal cellscan be grown in the test tube, butthey stop growing at concentra-tions much lower than their normaldensity in body tissues.

Researchers believe this is duein part to a lack of the continuousnourishment and cleansing actionprovided by the capillaries or tinyblood vessels that permeate normaltissue.

Under test tube conditions, cellsfunction quite differently than theydo in normal tissue, where the cellsare in contact with each other andinfluence each other's activities.

The investigations have simu-lated the conditions of living tissueby growing cells inside a glassshell fitted with a bundle of tinytubes through which a nutrientfluid, comparable to blood, is con-tinuously pumped.

The cells grow over the surfaceof the tubes and in the spacesbetween them. Like blood vessels,the tubes are porous enough toallow oxygen and fresh nutrientsto pass through the walls to thecells and cellular waste products tobe removed.

Dr. Knazek and Dr. Gullino planto use the new technique in cancerresearch. For example, by alteringhormones and other ingredients inthe nutrient fluid, they will studythe conditions that promote or in-hibit the growth of various kindsof cancer tissue.

The artificial capillary networkis also an efficient way of collectingcell products. For instance, hor-mones produced by cells can beisolated from the fluid in whichthey are grown.

NCI Launches ProgramOn Pancreatic Cancer;Makes Eight Awards

With the award of research con-tracts to eight institutions, the Na-tional Cancer Institute launched anew program aimed at preventingand controlling cancer of the pan-creas.

Now the fourth major cause ofcancer death in the U.S., cancer ofthe pancreas has been steadily in-creasing since the beginning of thecentury. It is expected to kill about19,000 Americans in 1972.

Etiology UnknownAlmost nothing is known about

causes or why it is becoming morecommon. It is difficult to diagnose,and the survival rate is very low.

As a first step in the new pro-gram, researchers will exploreways of producing pancreatic can-cer in laboratory animals in anattempt to find a valid model forthe human disease.

Contracts for the research havebeen awarded to the Boston Uni-versity Medical School, Case West-ern Reserve University School ofMedicine, Dartmouth M e d i c a lSchool, St. Louis University, Uni-versity of Chicago, and the Univer-sity of Kansas Medical Center.Other Studies Noted

In a parallel line of research,sdentists at the University ofTennessee and Wright State Uni-versity will attempt to grow nor-mal pancreati; cells of humans,rats, and guinea pigs in laboratorytest tubes.

If they are successful, they willthen add various cancer-causingchemical to the cells in an attemptto produce cancerous changes.

Studies are also being started toattempt to single out populationgroups which are particularly sus-ceptible to this form of cancer.

Future efforts will focus oncauses, diagnosis and treatment ofpancreatic cancer.

2 Noted Investigators—Drs. Albert Sahin,Charles Davidson—Are Fogarty Scholars

Dr. Sabin (I) recently returned from Israel where he headed the WeizmannInstitute. During his tenure here, he will have an office in Stone House. Dr.Davidson has been affiliated with Harvard Medical School since 1941, whenhe was named a research fellow in medicine. He will reside at Stone House.

Two distinguished researchers have joined the Scholars-in-ResidenceProgram of the Fogarty International Center. They are Drs. Albert B.Sabin, the world renowned virologist who developed the oral polio vac-cine, and Dr. Charles S. Davidson,professor of medicine, HarvardMedical School.

Dr. Sabin entered the programas a Fogarty Scholar yesterday(Jan. 2); he will remain herethrough next December. Dr. David-son joined the program on Dec. 4;he will remain in residence throughJune.

Before coming to NIH, Dr. Sabinwas President of the WeizmannInstitute in Rehovot, Israel. Priorto that post, he was DistinguishedService Professor and chief of In-fectious Diseases, Children's Hos-pital Research Foundation in Cin-cinnati.

In 1968, Dr. Sabin delivered thelecture at the Jules Freund Memor-ial Seminar at NIH. He spoke onthe viral etiology of human cancer—he is noted for his research onthat subject and also on studies ofdengue fever and arthritis.

The prestigious scientist haspublished a number of articles onhis research, and is the recipient ofmany awards for his scientificachievements. He will work withNIH scientists and take part in in-ternational scientific issues.

Dr. Sabin will have an office inStone House, but he and Mrs. Sa-bin will live in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Davidson, a graduate of Mc-Gill University, is known for hisresearch in diseases of the liver.

Dr. Jordan, a native of Germany,migrated to England with her fam-ily in 1947 and lived there until1953 when she came to the U.S.She became a citizen in 1961.

She has received both pre- andpostdoctoral fellowships from NIH,and a Helen Hay Whitney Founda-tion fellowship.

Dr. Jordan has authored and co-authored publications in the fieldsof galactose metabolism researchand bacteriophage lambda genetics.
