For a woman who doesn’t enjoy the taste of Ice Cream and easily becomes “bored”with board games, Ms. Hazelwood has become a favorite among English teachers here atHayesville High School.

Karen Dallas Hazelwood was born on April 19, 1949 in Thomaston, Georgia. Her familyattended church nearly four times a week, and in the summertime, she would play softball.

Ms. Hazelwood remembers that while in the fourth grade, she was dared to pour her

portion of Baked Beans into the lunchroom Ketchup bottle. A classmate of hers reported itto the teacher, and she was punished not only at school but also at home by her father, theschool principal.

 Young Ms. Hazelwood used to be very afraid of spiders. At the sight of a spider shewould jump on anything close and scream. “People had to come and remove it from mysight,” she says. Her fear continued through her education at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta,but gradually, she overcame it.

As a child she had always wanted to become an Archeologist because the job hadlooked fascinating to her.

Her parents, Julia and Dallas Hazelwood, had both worked in education and that is whyMs. Hazelwood believes she began to pursue teaching.

A public school teacher for twenty-nine years, including thirteen years in Asheville,Atlanta, and the outskirts of Durham, Ms. Hazelwood says that worst part of her job isgrading all of the essays and papers, while the best part is seeing all of the kids anddifferent personalities.

“Every day is interesting,” she says with a smile, “I’m never bored teaching.”She moved to Hayesville in the SEASON of YEAR because she wanted to live in the

mountains, and still be close to her family.Her hero is her only sister “because of the way she battled cancer.” Her sister died

from the disease.Ms. Hazelwood, who compares herself to the fictional character Siddhartha because

she believes she has to experience many things to find the true meaning of life, this adviceto students, you need “to think, to wait, but not necessarily to fast.”

* Ms. Hazelwood’s favorite restaurant is Enricos.

* Her favorite holiday is Easter not only because of religious reasons, but also because of therebirth of everything in that time of year.

* She played the Organ for her church when she was growing up.

* The scarriest thing she says she ever did was hitchhike.

* Ms. Hazelwood has five dogs and two cats.

* Her favorite insect is the Ladybug.

* Her favorite television show is Law and Order.

*Her favorite color is Yellow because it’s “bright like the sun and full of life.”

* The English teacher’s favorite food is New York Style Cheese Cake.

* Her hobbys are gardening and flying kites.

* Her favorite word in the English language is “please”.

* She has never read the dictionary.

* Ms. Hazelwood’s favorite letter of the alphabet is Z “because it’s rare, but I get to write iteverythime I write my name.”

* The wierdest thing about her house is that her living room has an 8.2 meter high ceiling.

* Her favorite non-U.S. country is Scottland because “it’s beautiful, the people are friendly,

and the deserts are great.”

* Her favorite quote is “Nothing is atlast sacred but the integrety of your own mind.”-Emerson.

* Her favorite author is Paolo Coelho.

*Her favorite actor is Nicholas Cage and her favorite actress is Meryl Streep.

*Her favorite form of transportation is “anything that I personally have control over.”

* Ms. Hazelwood’s wierdest dream was that she was elected president of the United Statesbut couldn’t take office until six months later.

* Her favorite flowers are Snapdragons.

* Her favorite newspaper is the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

* Her favorite magazine is Southren Living.

* Ms. Hazelwood always enjoys “lots of extra cheese” on her pizzas.
