THE RAVENSBOURNE REVIEW Issue 39: 2nd—6th September 2019 “TO BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE” Message from the Head As we come to the end of the second week of term and our first full week with all the students back, I would like congratulate all the students on the fantastic start they have made this year. The Year 7’s have made a great first impression on me with their conduct and enthusiasm for the start of their secondary school journey. You really wouldn't think they have only been here for 9 days. The departmental clubs have all started this week and I would like to see each student taking part in at least one extra-curricular club. You will see our current listing of clubs further down the newsletter. The Sports Department are looking for more students for their Basketball and Rugby teams so if you are interested in being part of one of our sports teams then I would encourage you to try out for one of the teams. We will look forward to reporting on our upcoming sports fixtures throughout the year. Wishing you all a lovely weekend. Message from the Head

As we come to the end of the second week of term and our first full week with all the students back, I would like

congratulate all the students on the fantastic start they have made this year. The Year 7’s have made a great first

impression on me with their conduct and enthusiasm for the start of their secondary school journey. You really

Wellbeing Ambassador Role

What is a Wellbeing Ambassador?

A Wellbeing Ambassador is a student that wants to break the stigma around mental health, by supporting their peers in

looking after their wellbeing. Wellbeing Ambassadors will be at the heart of all of the work that we do in looking after your

peers’ mental health and wellbeing, and understanding it. You will act as a role model for all students in our school to help

them to be the best that they can be.

Why are we creating this role?

Evidence shows that across the UK, mental health issues in children are increasing while the wellbeing of young people is

deteriorating. Today, young people like yourselves have to navigate a complex and ever-changing world, facing challenges

and pressures in numerous aspects of your life. In fact, 90% of leaders in schools have reported an increase in the number of

students experiencing anxiety or stress over the last five years.

In your lifetime you will spend 7,800 hours at school! This is what makes school the perfect place to help students to learn

about their own mental health and emotional wellbeing, and a place for students who are facing challenges to receive support.

Gaining knowledge, receiving support and building resilience doesn’t just help you in school, but sets you on a path for the

rest of your lives. Not only this, but having good emotional wellbeing gives you the best opportunity for academic

achievement.

You could be the student who can help our school to support one another and build a better understanding for

mental health and emotional wellbeing in our school.

What is involved in the role?

• You will receive specialist training from The Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead teacher, The Mental Health Foundation

for the Peer Education Project as well as an official certificate that counts towards future applications.

• Weekly training on Mental Health First Aid

• Help with the running of BBBS and providing 1:1 mentoring to referred students at form times

• Run the student Mental Health and Wellbeing Committee

• Assist with training and assemblies across the school on Mental Health and Wellbeing

• Work together to run Anti Bullying Week and Mental Health Week and other awareness days, including: resource

creating, delivering sessions, fundraising and awareness activities, social media and promotion to peers.

• Deliver the Peer Education Project on Mental Health and Wellbeing to the Year 7 cohort and TRS

• Look after the Mental Health and Wellbeing noticeboard

• Be ambassadors and role models for Mental Health and Wellbeing in the whole school

What kind of person are we looking for?

We are looking for any student that cares about the emotional wellbeing of their peers, and thinks that they can be a

leader in this area. Some qualities we are looking for are:

• Open minded and willing to learn

• Empathetic

• A good listener

• Mature and able to talk about sometimes sensitive topics

• Want to become a role model and influence positive change

• Interested in Mental Health and Wellbeing

• Interested in developing as a leader

How do I apply for the role?

To apply, you will need to write a letter of no more than 2 pages addressing the points above and explaining why you think

that you would be suitable for the role. You may want to detail other significant experience and/or qualities that you have.

• Your letter must contain your full name and homeroom year/group.

• The deadline for applications is Thursday 12th September by 4pm. Applications may be delivered by hand to

Miss K Barker in English or emailed to [email protected].

Applications given after the deadline will not be considered. We look forward to receiving your application for this

incredible opportunity.

Thursday 5th September

3:00pm – 4:00pm in DS1

We will be holding auditions for students in years 7-13

to join our dance companies ‘RB Juniors’ (years 7-9)

and ‘RB Seniors’ (years 10-13). Both clubs will run

every Thursday from 3:00pm – 4:15pm and will give

students opportunities to develop their skills, learn

new movement, perform and maybe even compete!

If you would like to audition please come

prepared, with your kit, to learn some routines and

demonstrate some improvisation, on Thursday 5th

September at 3:00pm.

Dance Company Auditions

Being a part of any dance club will provide students with opportunities, to make new

friends, learn new skills in a range of dance styles, allow them to create their own movement and perform at a number of

events throughout the year.

Hello, I’m Matthew Urquhart-Proctor and I am the new Head Boy. I am currently studying PE, Psychology and Business Studies. I hope to study Sport and Exercise Science at University and looking beyond universities, I hope to enter the world of sport, preferably as a professional squash player. I am very pleased to be heading up the Student Leadership team this year, my main goal is to improve the school in any way possible but I would mostly like to make the school a valuable yet enjoyable experience for all students, I would aim to make the Student Leadership team accessible to all students so their point’s of view

can be heard.

Hi I’m Chrysie Alexiou and I have been appointed Head Girl this year; something I’m looking forward to because it gives me a real chance to give back to the school in more ways than I could as a prefect previously. I want to be able to create an open door policy with Student Leadership so that in our community it is

seen as a collective effort rather that the work of “elite members chosen by

teachers”.

Regardless of whether or not a student applied to be a prefect, they should still feel the right to tell the school what they want and get the chance to improve their own futures. The initiative I intend on implementing works under the motto of ‘Giving is Receiving’ and should give students and teachers alike a chance to cross collaborate; wherein academic mentoring, provided by subject experts, will give peers the necessary attention and further consolidate the knowledge of the mentor. This then helps teachers as they have subject experts on hand and provides every student with the chance to fill in gaps that may not have been filled in a large class environment whilst strengthening the sense of community, teaching mentoring skills and creating a collaborative environment. My passion for this initiative comes from my aspiration to be a child psychologist and improve the lives of children within education; an unavoidable institution which can be both a blessing and a burden in shaping the future of our world. For this I’m currently studying Psychology, Biology, Sociology and Drama from which I will hopefully get the grades to study Psychology, and possibly Neuroscience, at University. I’m certain it will be a pleasure to lead the school this year and just maybe leave knowing I’ve given back just as

much as they have given me.

We are always interested to see and hear about the activities our students do outside of school and we really enjoy

sharing their successes with you. Not only do we want to encourage our students to join the extra curricular clubs

provided in school, we also feel clubs and organisations out of school can offer young people invaluable life

experiences which they will carry with them into adulthood.

Gabriella Buddle-Smith 9BH

Over the summer Gabby did exceptionally well in the Kent Championships Under 16 and

Under 14 events, winning 6 out of 9 matches.

Gabby has been informed this week that she has been selected for the 14 and under Kent

squad.

This a fantastic achievement for her as Kent is a very strong County.

Well done Gabby!

Louis Harney 8MN

Louis Harney and his Motorcycle Display Team—The Imps

Louis has been in The Imps based in Dagenham for 3 years. He is a critical member of team and has

participated in many of the major tricks and stunts including fire jump and pyramid.

Louis has performed all over Britain, Northern Ireland, Canada and soon to be Norway and Edinburgh Castle.

What an incredible team to be involved in. We look forward to seeing where Louis’ motorcycle skills and

stunts take him in the future.

Miss Brydon’s Tutor Group 11BD discussed the impact social media is having on children within the UK.

Students views:

• People act differently on social media than they do in real life, actions are not always positive.

• We create a digital footprint from social media, stuff that is posted stays with us and could affect future

employment. Make positive choices to give yourselves the best possible chances.

• Social media could be used as a positive platform to raise awareness, fundraise etc.

Miss Fontenelle’s Tutor Group 10 FN discussed this quote by Mahatma Gandhi.

TRS Guinness World Record Attempt

On the 24th September The Ravensbourne School will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record of the most

football penalties taken in an hour.

The attempt will consist of eleven players trying to reach the target of 1,302. The aim of this attempt is to raise money for Cancer Research UK, to do this we will be running activities in school and also be at Bromley FC. Bromley FC will be doing a charity collection at their game against Woking on the evening of the 24th September. The charity collection allows us as a school to express our affiliation with Bromley FC and come together to hopefully make a

difference to the charity.

We will be promoting this event within school over the next couple of weeks and look forward to sharing with you on

how we did.
