THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

Although ample evidence to believe in Jesus as the Son of God were available, God did not force individuals to accept Jesus’ claims. Individuals were given reasons to believe, yet they maintained their freedom to doubt.

We also see the pull of human relationships and pride in the reactions of the Jewish leaders. John12: 42-43 “Nevertheless, even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more that the praise of “God.”

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

The lesson text provides a glimpse into the personal life of Jesus -- one filled with love and compassion for Lazarus and his sisters.

How comforting to know that even Jesus wept on occasion, and how thrilling to be reminded of His power over death.

Was the raising of Lazarus the only time Jesus raised someone from the dead?

No, He raised the son of the widow from Nain, Luke 7:11017; and he raised the daughter of Jairus Luke 8:49-56.

Page 5: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

What was so different about Jesus raising Lazarus?

The length of time Lazarus had been in the grave.

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

John 11:1 “Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.”

Where is Bethany? Bethany was a small town on the

eastern slope of the Mount of Olives about two miles from Jerusalem.

Page 7: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

Where was Jesus at the time Mary and Martha sent for Him?

He was teaching in the region of Perea which is on near the Jordon River and the Salt Sea or Dead Sea. Approximately 30-40 miles from Bethany.

Page 8: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

John 11: 3-4 “Therefore the sisters sent to Him saying “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.” 4. When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Verses 5-6 “Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6. So, when He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was.

Why did Jesus not go immediately, or simply speak in order that Lazarus might be healed instead a waiting to go see him two days later?

V. 11-13 “--- Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.” 12. Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.” 13. However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep.”

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

vv. 14-15 “Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.” 15. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe: nevertheless, let us go to him.”

Why was Jesus glad that He was not there when Lazarus died?

This way, the miracle was a stronger indication that Jesus was the Son of God.

Vv.17-19 “So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. 18. Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away. 19. And many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.”

What was the significance of many Jews being there when Jesus came?

They had threaten to kill Jesus. Thomas even said, let us go with him that we might die with him.

Page 13: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

Vv. 20-22 “Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house. 21. Now Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”

Did Martha have faith that Jesus could have saved the life of Lazarus?

Did she believe that Jesus could raise her brother?

Page 14: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

Vv.23-26 “Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise again.” 24. Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” 25. “Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

What is Jesus telling Martha in this passage? That Lazarus will live physically again.

Vv27- “She said to Him, Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is come into the world.”

Page 16: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

Vv. 28-30 “And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, The Teacher has come and is calling for you. 29. As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him. 30. Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was in the place where Martha met him”

Why did Jesus meet with Mary and Martha by themselves?

Page 17: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

Vv31-32 “Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She is going to the tomb to weep there. 32. Then when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

Page 18: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

Vv. 33-35 “Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. 34. And He said, Where have you laid him? They said to Him, Lord, come and see. 35. Jesus wept.”

Page 19: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

Vv. 36-37 “Then the Jews said, See how He loved him! 38. And some of them said, Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?”

Page 20: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

Vv. 38-40 “Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39. Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.” 40. Jesus said to her, Did. I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”

Page 21: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

Vv. 41-42 “Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, Father, I thank you that you have heard Me. 42. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by, I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.”

V.43. “Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth!”

Page 23: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

-Guy N. Woods in his Commentary on John states, “This loud cry was offered NOT of course, because it was necessary thus to speak in order for Lazarus to hear, nor as some assert because of tension and excitement which He felt, but for the benefit of those present. It was important that all of these should note that Lazarus came forth AT the command of Jesus and because of it.”

Page 24: THE RAISING OF LAZARUS TEXT: JOHN 11

THE RAISING OF LAZARUS

Vv. 44-46 “And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Loose him, and let him go. 45. Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him. 46. But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did.”

Thus the very mourners who doubted Him were agents in the completion of the miracle. In their participation the mourners in fact became part of the sign and therefore were undeniable witnesses to the power of Jesus. (Gerald L. Borchert)

Discussion:1. What does this account teach us about the purpose of miracles?2. Why did Jesus not rush to Bethany to heal Lazarus?3. What can we learn about compassion from the example Jesus set in this text?4. Why do you think John emphasized Jesus’ Loud voice when he recorded His call of Lazarus from the cave. V.43
