Day! This weekend we have replaced the Readings for the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time with the Readings from the Memorial Mass of St. Thomas Aquinas. The theme of our Gospel (Mathew 23: 8�12) is about having one teacher and master, who is Jesus Christ. This is a good time as a parish family to reflect upon how we are growing in our knowledge of our faith and continuing to be lifelong learners. We have a beautiful faith! There is so much joy and beauty in the beliefs and teachings of the Cath-olic Church. G.K. Chesterton once wrote, “The difficulty in explaining 'why I am a Catholic' is that there are ten thousand reasons all amounting to one reason: that Catholicism is true.” The Catholic Church is not just one denomination among many. In fact, it can trace its founding roots back to Jesus Christ, who started our Church. For 2,000 years, the Catholic Church has guarded the truth that Jesus has taught, whether in or out of style. In the Church today, one can ex-perience the most personal relationship with Christ through the Holy Eucharist, the gift of Christ’s Body and Blood to us. Since its founding, the Catholic Church has continued to be the largest body of Christians on earth. Though it’s not per-fect, nor does it have perfect members, the Church still con-tains the fullness of truth, which Jesus promised would set us free. As the Blessed, Archbishop Fulton Sheen (Beatified Dec. 21, 2019) once said, “There are not even 100 people in this country who hate the Catholic Church, but there are mil-lions who hate what they think the Catholic Church to be.” The word “Catholic” means universal, and that is really what the Catholic Church is�a universal body of believers, united in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Our Catholic family is made up of people of every race, age, and walk of life. For centuries, the Catholic Church has been the place to turn to for the source of Christian belief, an intimate encounter with Jesus Christ, a welcoming family, and a guiding light to get to heaven.�We have a strong patron Saint in Thomas Aquinas to inspire us to devote our lives to Jesus Christ. We have a special gift of one another who make up this unique loving family of disciples. Catholic author Mathew Kelly points out:�“The people we surround ourselves with either raise or lower our standards. They either help us to become the�best�version�of�ourselves or encourage us to become lesser ver-sions of ourselves. We become like our friends. No man becomes great on his own. No woman becomes great on her own. The people around them help to make them great. We all need people in our lives who raise our standards, remind us of our essential purpose, and challenge us to become the�best�version�of�ourselves.”�Today we thank God for the gift of our Catholic faith and our St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Family. We are blessed to be a part of this faith community that helps us to love Jesus and become the best version of ourselves that we can be. St. Thomas Aquinas, pray for us!�

nuestro patrón parroquial Este fin de semana hemos sustituido las lecturas del tercer domingo del tiempo ordinario por las lecturas de la misa conmemorativa de Santo Tomás de Aquino. El tema de nuestro Evangelio (Mateo 23: 8�

12) se trata de tener un maestro y experto, que es Jesucristo. Este es un buen momento como familia parroquial para refle-xionar sobre cómo estamos creciendo en nuestro conoci-miento de nuestra fe y cómo continuamos aprendiendo de por vida. Tenemos una fe hermosa. Hay tanta alegría y belle-za en las creencias y enseñanzas de la Iglesia Católica. G K. Chesterton escribió una vez: "La dificultad para explicar 'por qué soy católico' es que hay diez mil razones, todas con una sola razón: que el catolicismo es verdadero". La Iglesia Cató-lica no es solo una denominación entre muchas. De hecho, puede rastrear sus raíces fundacionales hasta Jesucristo, quien inició nuestra Iglesia. Sobre nuestro Patrón, Santo Tomás de Aquino El filósofo y teólogo Santo Tomás de Aquino nació alrededor del 1225 en Roccasecca, Italia. Combinando los principios teológicos de la fe con los principios filosóficos de la razón, se ubicó entre los pensadores más influyentes del escolasti-cismo medieval. Una autoridad de la Iglesia Católica Roma-na y un prolífico escritor, Aquino murió el 7 de marzo de 1274, en el monasterio cisterciense de Fossanova, cerca de Terracina, Lacio, Estados Pontificios, Italia.�Santo Tomás de Aquino fue un gran teólogo, filósofo y doc-tor de la Iglesia. Santo Tomás de Aquino, sacerdote domini-co de Italia, es el patrón de las universidades, colegios y es-cuelas católicas. A Santo Tomás de Aquino se le atribuye la

The building blocks of sanctity include regular and fervent participation in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation, Scripture study, daily prayer, joyful asceticism, and generous loving service of our neighbor.�It can be hard work to live a holy life. Yet we are given the tools we need. Let us use them and live a holy life! �

Gospel Reflection

Jerome Buhman We have recently entered into a new phase of the Church’s Li-turgical Year �� “Ordinary Time.” The term ‘Ordinary’ that the Church uses when we talk about Ordinary Time DOES NOT mean “mundane” or “unremarkable.” The term Ordinary refers to being “numbered” or “ordered.” We use the term ‘ordinal’ when we talk about things being first, second or third and so forth; in the same way, we order or we number the Sundays be-tween the Christmas Season and Lent and between Pentecost and Advent, as the Second or Third or Twenty�third, Sunday in Ordinary Time. So Ordinary in Ordinary Time refers simply to the fact that the days are numbered or ordered in a consecutive fashion. �Having said all this, I do believe that the days of Ordinary Time are ordinary in the sense that we usually think � that is, they are quite unremarkable in that they are not part of the great cycle of feasts in the Church, but that does not mean they are not as important. If not for the events we hear in the Gospels of Ordinary Time, we could not cele-brate the Church’s great feasts. It is the Sundays of Ordi-nary Time that set the foundation for what we celebrate at Christmas and Easter.�So, we can see that the word ordinary can mean both ‘unremarkable’ and also mean ‘numbered’ or ‘ordered’ � and the word ordinary can carry these two concepts at the same time. �

In today’s Ordinary Time Gospel, Jesus calls his first disciples: Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Now these guys were fisher-men � they were just regular guys � they were ‘unremarkable’ � they were ordinary. But they were also the first disciples; thus they were also ordinary in the sense that they were numbered or ordered. But they were remarkable in the fact that they left the comfort of a safe ‘ordinary’ life behind and took up the uncom-fortable ordinariness of being numbered among the twelve. �Now, all of us probably think of ourselves as “ordinary people” � and we are more right than we can believe. Most of us proba-bly consider ourselves fairly unremarkable compared with the famous or powerful � but remember, so did the first apostles.�But we are also ordinary in the sense that we are ‘numbered’ or ‘ordered,’ by Christ as members of His Church. Just as Peter, Andrew, James, and John were the first four called, we each are called and numbered. �Now, an ordinal number sequence requires every one of its unique, individual numbers to be linked together to be a whole, otherwise the sequence falls apart; in the same way, the Church, the living Body of Christ, requires all of its unique, individual members to be linked together as a community. And what links us together is Christ and his Gospel.�Christ is calling us, he is ‘ordering’ us for the Kingdom, to use whatever is unique in us for the advancement of that kingdom on Earth. Our call, and our responsibility, is to be ordinary � to remain unremarkable, and find what it is Christ is ‘ordering’ us for in His Church. What is our individual uniqueness that, if we apply it in relation to and conjunction with the whole Church, will move us toward the Kingdom.�Our challenge is to be ordinary � and that is an extraordinary thing.�

Recientemente hemos entrado en una nueva fase del Año litúrgi-co de la Iglesia, el “Tiempo Ordinario”. El término “ordinario” que usa la Iglesia cuando hablamos de tiempo ordinario NO significa “mundano” o “insignificante”. El término Ordinario se refiere a estar “numerado” u “ordenado”. Usamos el término “ordinal” cuando hablamos de que las cosas son primero, segun-do o tercero y así sucesivamente; de la misma manera, ordena-mos o numeramos los domingos entre Navidad y Cuaresma y entre Pentecostés y Adviento, como Segundo o Tercero o Vigé-simo Tercero, Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Así que Ordina-rio en tiempo ordinario se refiere simplemente al hecho de que los días están numerados u ordenados de manera consecutiva.�

Habiendo dicho todo esto, creo que los días del Tiempo Ordinario son ordinarios en el sentido en que solemos pensar, es decir, no tienen nada de especial en el sentido de que no forman parte del gran ciclo de fiestas de la Igle-sia, pero eso no significa que no sean tan importantes. Si no fuera por los acontecimientos que escuchamos en los Evangelios del Tiempo Ordinario, no podríamos celebrar las grandes fiestas de la Iglesia. Son los Domingos del Tiempo Ordinario los que sientan las bases de lo que cele-

bramos en Navidad y Pascua.�Entonces, podemos ver que la palabra ordinario puede significar tanto “sin complicaciones” como también “numerado” u “ordenado,”, y la palabra ordinario puede llevar estos dos con-ceptos al mismo tiempo.�En el Evangelio correspondiente al Tercer domingo del Tiempo Ordinario, Jesús llama a sus primeros discípulos: Pedro, Andrés, Santiago y Juan. Ahora bien, estos tipos eran pescadores, eran simplemente tipos normales, no eran “nada extraordinarios”, eran normales. Pero también fueron los primeros discípulos, por lo que también eran ordinarios en el sentido de que estaban con-tados u ordenados. Pero fueron notables por el hecho de que dejaron atrás la comodidad de una vida “ordinaria” segura y asumieron la incómoda rutina de estar contados entre los doce.�Ahora, probablemente todos pensamos en nosotros mismos co-mo “gente común”, y tenemos más razón de lo que podemos creer. La mayoría de nosotros probablemente nos consideramos poco notables en comparación con los famosos o poderosos, pero recuerden, también lo hicieron los primeros apóstoles.�Además, somos ordinarios en el sentido de que Cristo nos “numera” u “ordena” como miembros de Su Iglesia. De la misma manera, la Iglesia, el Cuerpo viviente de Cristo, requiere que todos sus miembros únicos e individuales estén unidos co-mo comunidad. Y lo que nos une es Cristo y su Evangelio.�Cristo nos está llamando, nos está “ordenando” para el Reino, para usar lo que sea único en nosotros para el avance de ese reino en la Tierra. Nuestro llamado, y nuestra responsabilidad, es ser ordinarios, permanecer insignificantes y descubrir qué es lo que Cristo nos “ordena” en Su Iglesia. ¿Cuál es nuestra singu-laridad individual que, si la aplicamos en relación y en conjunto con toda la Iglesia, nos moverá hacia el Reino?�Nuestro desafío es ser ordinarios, y eso es algo extraordinario.�

TOTUS TUUS 2021: Week of

July 12 – 16 We are excited to inform our STA families that we will be hosting once again Totus Tuus for this summer; Totus Tuus is our Summer Camp for Children going into 1st to 5th grade. Last year due to construction in the church and chapel and the unknown of Covid�19, we did not host the camp. However, this year we are happy to welcome the Totus Tuus team and host the camp at the dioc-esan building site, Holy Name Heights, just 5 minutes away from St. Thomas Aquinas. Due to our second phase of con-struction (the kitchen and social hall), the STA facilities will not be available to host the camp and the kids….but we are very grateful to our diocese for opening their doors to wel-come us there. Harnessing the Sun:

Caring for Our Common Home “The Creator does not abandon us; he never forsakes his loving plan or repents of having created us. Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home.” ��Pope Francis, Laudato Si’ [13]�

We are ecstatic to announce that we have begun Phase 1 of our Make Disciples Capital Campaign (MDCC) by installing seventy two 335 watt solar panels on the roof of our Church. The panels were installed in February and became fully oper-ational on March 4, 2020! Thank you to the generous house-holds who have participated in our MDCC, who have made this project a reality.�We are able to more fully live out our discipleship, following Jesus by how we live our lives, when we are caring for our common home��our environment.� We have a commitment as Catholics to reduce our carbon footprint and to be good stew-ards of the earth’s resources.� Here is some data that using solar energy rather than fossil fuels will have on our parish:��� We will save about 10% on our electric bill annually and

lower our carbon footprint by 6%.��� The system will pay for itself in just under 13 years and

require little to no maintenance.��� The value of the solar�generated energy is an estimated

$3,000 per year.��� Every year the solar electric system will produce the

electrical equivalent of 17,260 miles not driven, or 38,750 pounds of coal not burned.�

Controles del sistema de climatización:

Información actualizada e instalación Además del trabajo que conlleva nuestra Campaña de Capital “Haciendo discípulos”, estamos trabajando en la actualización sistemática de los sistemas, tecnología, cableado e iluminación en todas las instalaciones de nuestra parroquia. Durante los últi-mos dos años, es posible que hayan notado muchas fluctuacio-nes en la temperatura dentro de la iglesia. Mientras tratábamos de abordar los problemas de comodidad en la iglesia, nos dimos cuenta de que el sistema de control original estaba fallando.�

Ahora que nuestro edificio tiene 45 años, las líneas que llevan el aire a los termostatos y los controles han comenzado a fallar y no hay una manera fácil de reparar o reemplazar las líneas de aire. Los propios controles también han comenzado a fallar. Es posible que haya notado que la temperatura estaba a más de 75 grados en la iglesia, porque simplemente no hemos podido con-trolar el sistema de calefacción en la iglesia. Hemos recurrido a abrir y cerrar manualmente las válvulas grandes en el sótano que permiten que el agua caliente ingrese al sistema de calefacción para tratar de controlar qué tan caliente o fría está la iglesia. Mu-chas veces que uno de los miembros del personal tenga que ir al sótano antes, durante y después de las misas para intentar mante-ner la temperatura en un nivel aceptable.�

Este trabajo incluye instalar nuevos cables e instalar nuevos sen-sores digitales de temperatura y humedad y termostatos en cada una de las habitaciones, reemplazar todas las válvulas neumáti-cas con válvulas controladas electrónicamente, conectar los con-troles manuales de humedad al nuevo sistema y agregar contro-les automatizados a los conductos para controlar entrada de aire fresco en el edificio, lo que ayuda a mantenernos a todos sanos y seguros. Si bien reemplazamos nuestra caldera con un sistema de baja demanda hace unos años, no hemos visto una reducción de costos tan grande como espe-rábamos, simplemente porque el sistema de calefacción en sí no ha estado funcionando de manera eficiente. Este nuevo sistema debería permitirnos ver más ahorros de energía en el futuro, mientras nos esforzamos por ser buenos administradores de sus dones y de la creación de Dios.�

Este nuevo control del sistema de climatización (HVAC, por sus siglas en inglés) también interactuará con el resto de nuestro complejo parroquial, mientras continuamos nuestro trabajo a través de las Fases 2 y 3 de nuestra Campaña de Capital “Haciendo discípulos”. El sistema HVAC del salón de convivio y la cocina se actualizará este verano durante la Fase 2 y luego se conectará e integrará con el sistema de control que se está instalando en la iglesia y las oficinas esta semana. Una vez que pasemos a la Fase 3, toda el ala de Evangelización o Educación Religiosa también se actualizará e integrará. Si bien existe cierta superposición, este proyecto para los controles del HVAC no es parte de la Campaña de Capital “Haciendo discípulos”. Como tal, los fondos para este proyecto provienen de nuestro fondo de mantenimiento del edificio. Estamos agradecidos con todos nuestros feligreses y amigos que son tan generosos y apoyan el ministerio y la misión de Jesús, aquí en Santo Tomás de Aquino.�

HVAC Controls – Update & Installation In addition to the work included in our Make Disciples Capital Campaign, we are working on systematically updating systems, technology, wiring, and lighting throughout our parish facilities. During the past couple of years, you may have noticed a lot of fluctuations in the temperature in the church itself. As we tried to address the issues with the comfort in the church, we realized that the original control system was failing.�The original control system is a pneumatic (air pressure) based control system, which was installed in the brick walls of the church when the church was built. Now that our building is 45 years old, the lines that carry the air to the thermostats and the controls have begun to fail, and there is no easy way to fix or replace the air lines. The controls themselves have begun failing as well. If you were here on Christmas Eve, you may have no-ticed that it was over 75 degrees in the church, because we simp-ly have not been able to control the heating system in the church. We have resorted to manually opening and closing the large valves in the basement that allow the hot water into the heating system to try and control how warm or cool the church is. Often, one of the staff members to have to go into the base-ment before, during, and after Masses to attempt to keep the temperature in an acceptable range.�This week we have begun installing a new control system for the church, chapel, gathering space, library, conference rooms, and offices in the church wing of the building. This includes running new wires and installing new digital temperature and humidity sensors and thermostats in each of the rooms, replac-ing all the pneumatic valves with electronically controlled valves, connecting the manual humidity controls into the new system, and adding automated controls to the ductwork to con-trol fresh air intake into the building, helping to keep all of us healthy and safe. The new control system will monitor and con-trol the temperature and humidity of the building and provide staff with alerts and notifications on the status of the building through a digital interface, installed on our server. This update will not only make our spaces more comfortable but will also provide a cost savings to us on our monthly utility bills. While we replaced our boiler with an on�demand system a few years ago, we have not seen as large of a reduction in costs as we had hoped, simply because the heating system itself has not been operating in an efficient manner. This new system should allow us to see more energy savings in the future, as we strive to be good stewards of your gifts and of God’s creation.�This new HVAC Control System will also interface with the rest of our parish complex, as we continue our work through Phases 2 and 3 of our Make Disciples Capital Campaign. The Social Hall and Kitchen HVAC system will get updated this summer during Phase 2 and will then be connected to and integrate with the control system that is being installed in the church and offic-es this week. Once we move into Phase 3, then the entire Evan-gelization Wing (Religious Education) will be updated and inte-grated as well. While there is some overlap, this HVAC Con-trols project is not part of the Make Disciples Capital Campaign. As such, funding for this project with come from our building maintenance fund. We are grateful to all our parishioners and friends who are so generous and support the ministry and mis-sion of Jesus, here at St. Thomas Aquinas!�
