Course Description

From the UNT Catalog:

5190. Administrative Strategy. 3 hours. Capstone course providing the integration of functional areas

of business administration. Requires students to determine policy at the general- or top-management

level. Students address strategic organizational problems and the optimization of the total enterprise.

Course includes the use of lectures, case analysis and special topics. This course must be taken in the

student's last semester of course work. Restricted to College of Business majors.

The course is organized primarily around dynamic lectures and discussion. Your physical and mental

presence is critical to your success in this class. I will do my best to make sure that what is offered in

class helps you master the material.

Course Objective and Outcomes

The purpose of this course is to help you understand the “big” strategic decisions that managers

make – i.e., what those decisions are, why managers make them, and the consequences of different

courses of action. The course is unique in that we look at the firm as a whole, rather than through a

particular functional lens.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion, you should be able to: (1) define competitive advantage,

describe ways that firms gain both short-term and long term competitive advantages, and identify the

source of a firm’s competitive advantage, (2) list the major forces that shape an industry and

describe how each force influences the performance of industry participants, (3) define the two major

business-level approaches to competitive advantage and explain how they help overcome industry

threats, (4) define how each of the major corporate-level strategies relate each to competitive

advantage.

Since this class is taught entirely online, there are several key differences from traditional face-to-

face classes.

1. The instructor’s role is that of a coach and mentor, and students MUST have self discipline and

motivation to stay on top of the course.

2. Class meetings are asynchronous, although lectures must be completed in advance of the weekly

exams. Instead of having real time conversations in class, we will have on-going dialogues in forum

posts.

commenting on forum discussions rather than passively listening to lectures

4. Participation is ABSOLUTELY required, and will mainly take the form of postings to the online

discussion board.

ASSESSMENT & GRADING

Exams:

A total of four exams will cover the required reading and the content of the online lectures.

Complete the exams online by accessing the relevant exam on Blackboard, found in the assessments

folder of the course website. The exams will be timed and must be completed within 60 minutes of

opening the exam. Grades made available to students following the submission of the exam, pending

grading of essay questions. If you lose Internet connectivity during the exam, log back in

immediately and continue on with the exam. Save your answers often (every 5-10 minutes). Do not

attempt the exam until you are ready. Exams cannot be reopened once one hour has passed, and

questions that have not been completed will count as incorrect answers.

If you experience any issues while taking the exam, you must contact the Blackboard Helpdesk

immediately so that your issue is documented with a helpdesk ticket number. Considerations

regarding exam issues will be made by the instructor on an individual basis based on the

documentation.

There will be four exams. The format for the exams is multiple choice, true false, and short answer.

The final exam will be cumulative.

The first 3 exams will open each Friday at noon and will close promptly at 11:59PM the first Sunday

after the exam opens. In other words, the exam will be available for 59 hours and 59 minutes. You

may complete the exam any time within that window, however, only your first attempt will count.

Extra credit quizzes will be posted the day prior to each exam, and generally should be available from

about 5:00 PM until 11:59 PM. Completing the extra credit quiz will give you an idea of the way I

may word questions on the exam. As further incentive to complete the extra credit quizzes, I will

award one percentage point of extra credit on the exam that immediately follows the quiz to each

student that completes the quiz on time.

Capsim:

Registering: Students must sign up and purchase the Capsim simulation software. The

software can be downloaded from www.capsim.com . Once there, click “register”. After that,

you will be asked to enter an industry ID. Students should pay attention to their assigned

industry ID. Make sure you sign up for the right one! Capsim will be arranged as “footrace” –

you will not be competing in teams. Although much of the simulation is self paced, practice

rounds MUST be completed by the deadline, and the final decision in the competition mode

MUST be completed by the deadline.

Practice and Rehearsal simulation: At least 4 rounds of the practice simulation AND the

rehearsal simulation must be complete by the posted deadline (see course schedule). Each

counts for 1% of your grade on a pass/fail basis.

Simulation Assessment Method: Points are allocated according to your simulated company's

performance. There are eight performance criteria (e.g., ROA, ROS, or cumulative profit, etc.)

that will be used to assess your performance -- relative to the five other computer teams’

decisions. The scale that I use to determine simulation grades is the sum of your relative

ranking in years 1-8 of the simulation. I take a weighted average that factors your ranking in

THREE of the 8 measures. You will choose the three measures BEFORE you submit your round

1 decision. I will use your ranking against the five other computer teams in those

measures to determine your grades.

Paper: A short 6 page case analysis of your team is due October 12th at midnight. It is to be

complete individually and submitted through the blackboard system.

Discussion assignments and participation: Discussion assignments should be considered “mini-essays.” There will be four graded weekly assignments, each worth 3.5% of the final grade. Students will be expected to both respond to the questions I post and interact with other students. No discussion credit will be given if you do not post timely responses to the discussion forums.

The discussion forums are related to the lectures, external resources and activities. Upon completion or near completion of the assigned readings and activities, you are expected to engage in an ongoing discussion/debate with your learning community peers. Your contributions to the discussion forums will be graded for quality, timeliness of your contributions, and a detailed analysis of

SCHOLARLY EXPECTATIONS All works submitted for credit must be original works created by the scholar uniquely for the class. It is considered inappropriate and unethical, particularly at the graduate level, to make duplicate submissions of a single work for credit in multiple classes, unless specifically requested by the instructor. Work submitted at the graduate level is expected to demonstrate higher-order thinking skills and be of significantly higher quality than work produced at the undergraduate level.

Late Work

The instructor’s philosophy is that would-be entrepreneurs need to be ready for the realities of the

real world. In the real world, missing deadlines results in ventures failing. Therefore, the instructor

will not accept any late assignments unless arrangements are made ahead of time.

Class Participation

Students are required to login regularly to the online class site. The instructor will use the tracking

feature in Blackboard to monitor student activity. Students are also required to participate in all class

discussion board activities

Virtual Classroom Citizenship

The same guidelines that apply to traditional classes should be observed in the virtual classroom

environment. Please use proper netiquette when interacting with class members and the professor.

Policy on Server Unavailability or Other Technical Difficulties

The University is committed to providing a reliable online course system to all users. However, in the

event of any unexpected server outage or any unusual technical difficulty which prevents students

from completing a time sensitive assessment activity, the instructor will extend the time windows and

provide an appropriate accommodation based on the situation. Students should immediately report

any problems to the instructor and also contact the UNT Student Help Desk: [email protected] or

UNT POLICIES

Student Conduct and Discipline: Student Handbook.

Academic Honesty Policy

Academic integrity emanates from a culture that embraces the core values of trust and honesty

necessary for full learning to occur. As a student-centered public research university, the University of

North Texas promotes the integrity of the learning process by establishing and enforcing academic

standards. Academic dishonesty breaches the mutual trust necessary in an academic environment

and undermines all scholarship. See UNT Policy 18.1.16.

BUSI 5190: Administrative Strategy Calendar Fall 2017

8 Dr. Christopher Penney | University of North Texas

You are encouraged to become familiar with the University's Policy of Academic dishonesty found in

the Student Handbook. The content of the Handbook applies to this course. If you are in doubt

regarding the requirements, please consult with me before you complete any requirements of the

course.

On a course specific note, I will have information available that will allow me to determine what

location you took the exam. If I see a close match between your ip address, time of the attempt,

and/or other identifying information to another student on any of your exam or quiz attempts, I may

require you to take a proctored make-up exam that must be taken at a location and time I approve.

Your future exams will also need to follow that guidance.

ADA Policy

The University of North Texas makes reasonable academic accommodation for students with

disabilities. Students seeking accommodation must first register with the Office of Disability

Accommodation (ODA) to verify their eligibility. If a disability is verified, the ODA will provide you

with an accommodation letter to be delivered to faculty to begin a private discussion regarding your

specific needs in a course. You may request accommodations at any time, however, ODA notices of

accommodation should be provided as early as possible in the semester to avoid any delay in

implementation. Note that students must obtain a new letter of accommodation for every semester

and must meet with each faculty member prior to implementation in each class. For additional

information see the Office of Disability Accommodation website at http://www.unt.edu/oda. You may

also contact them by phone at 940.565.4323.

Important Notice for F-1 Students taking Distance Education Courses:

Federal Regulation

To read detailed Immigration and Customs Enforcement regulations for F-1 students taking online

courses, please go to the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations website at http://www.ecfr.gov/.

The specific portion concerning distance education courses is located at Title 8 CFR 214.2 Paragraph

(f)(6)(i)(G). The paragraph reads:

(G) For F–1 students enrolled in classes for credit or classroom hours, no more than the equivalent of one class or three credits per session, term, semester, trimester, or quarter may be counted toward the full course of study requirement if the class is taken on-line or through distance education and does not require the student's physical attendance for classes, examination or other purposes integral to completion of the class. An on-line or distance education course is a course that is offered principally through the use of television, audio, or computer transmission including open broadcast, closed circuit, cable, microwave, or satellite, audio conferencing, or computer conferencing. If the F–1 student's course of study is in a language study program, no on-line or distance education classes may be considered to count toward a student's full course of study requirement.

University of North Texas Compliance

To comply with immigration regulations, an F-1 visa holder within the United States may need to

engage in an on-campus experiential component for this course. This component (which must be

approved in advance by the instructor) can include activities such as taking an on-campus exam,

participating in an on-campus lecture or lab activity, or other on-campus experience integral to the

completion of this course.

If such an on-campus activity is required, it is the student’s responsibility to do the following:

(1) Submit a written request to the instructor for an on-campus experiential component within one

week of the start of the course.

(2) Ensure that the activity on campus takes place and the instructor documents it in writing with a

notice sent to the International Student and Scholar Services Office. ISSS has a form available that

you may use for this purpose.

Because the decision may have serious immigration consequences, if an F-1 student is unsure about

his or her need to participate in an on-campus experiential component for this course, s/he should

contact the UNT International Student and Scholar Services Office (telephone 940-565-2195 or email

[email protected]) to get clarification before the one-week deadline.
