Secretary’s Report

From the Office of Vice President As 2010 began, I was reading one of my past jour-nals. While reading, I came across an entry recount-ing a dream I had several years ago. In that dream, God spoke to me and said, “Let go of what you are holding on to so I can fill your hands with something

new.”

I have certainly found that to be true in my own life. Late last summer as I decided to let go of a job, God wasted no time in filling my hands with something new. In fact, it was that very day that I was asked to be the Vice President of the new Northeast District. I accepted with excitement and anticipation, opening my hands to receive new experiences, new ideas and new connections. This is indeed new for me since it is my first time to hold an office in the United Meth-

odist Women organization.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Carolyn Danielson. I am a member of the First United Meth-odist Church of LaGrange where my husband Chris is pastor. I retired after spending 31 rewarding years as an elementary school teacher (19 years in the Fort Wayne area). Chris and I have 3 adult children (2

sons and 1 daughter) and a 5 month old grandson. I enjoy reading, playing piano and guitar, and outdoor activities. I also began composing music for worship

several years ago.

It is truly amazing how God can direct and fill our lives when we let go of the old and trust his leading into the future. We have an exciting year of programs ahead of us at both district and conference levels. New learning and growth experiences for us all. I look forward to meeting you and assisting you in any

way I can.

As we begin this New Year in a new district and new conference, will you join me with open hands to see

how God will fill them with that which is new?

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come, the old has gone

the new is here.”

PAGE 2 NORTHEAST INDIANA DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN FEBRUARY 2010

Hi everyone,

It is my privilege to have the unprecedented position as the 2010 Northeast District Secretary for the United Methodist Women. My objective is to estab-lish procedures that will be effective and helpful in the future of our piece of God’s kingdom in the Northeast District. I find great comfort in following in the footsteps of many secretaries that have pre-

ceded me in similar positions over the years.

I have been involved in United Methodist Women for over 22 years and have held positions at the local, districts (old Fort Wayne, Huntington, and Marion) as well as the North Indiana Conference, Steering Nominating Committee and past webmaster for the former North Indiana Conference. The former South Indiana Conference permitted me to work with them for 1 year. My resume would include the Publicist for

the Lucille Raines Residence as well as their webmaster. I feel a great appreciation that the United Methodist Women have allowed me to do all these things and develop my skills as a Christian lady. I live in Fort Wayne and am a member of Good

Shepherd United Methodist Church.

I look forward to being your District Secretary this year. If you (local secretaries) have any questions, feel free to contact me at [email protected] (preferable contact method), 260.484.4183 (home), 260.579.3203 (cell). I work full time so will return

e-mails and calls in the evenings.

Blessings, Bonnie Hansen

Your Northeast District Treasurer sends greetings to each of you. My name, Ardis Hendryx, will be fa-miliar to some because I have served as Treasurer of the Fort Wayne District for the past three years. For those of you who may not know me, my husband and I are retired, have three adult children and eight grandchildren. Because our family is scattered be-tween Indiana, Michigan and Texas we do enjoy trav-

eling for special family occasions and celebrations.

Looking ahead to the coming months I see changes not only in our organization’s name but how we do things; yet in many ways things have changed very little. The mission work of the United Methodist Women continues to need your financial support, your talents and your prayers. The mission giving remains the five items…Pledge to Mission, Special Mission Recognition pins, Gift to Missions (cards and monetary gifts), Gift in Memory and World Thank Offering. In addition many of you continue to support additional United Methodist Women mission projects. Some of you already have sent in your 2010 pledge amount. For those who have not I will be

contacting you.

The Indiana Conference has asked each local unit to support the following groups for a total giving of

$10.00 per member:

•Lucille Raines Residence $7.50 per member

• School of Christian Missions $2.00 per member

•Youth/Young Adult Service Fund $0.50 per member.

Because the Lucille Raines Residence is a project owned and operated by the United Methodist Women of the Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church, your dollars are needed each and every day so please send your support several times throughout the year. If it has been awhile since you visited

please consider scheduling a tour soon.

I have been pleased to be a part of the Northeast Dis-trict team and ask each of you to join in as we are

called to serve.

United Methodist women believe that a necessary step in becoming active supporters of women, chil-dren and youth in need is mission education. We actively read and study about various parts of the world and issues faced by our sisters near and far. The Reading Program is a key piece of this mission education. I am so excited to be your District SPR person.

I have begun to read the 2010 books and I must say they are thought provoking to say the least. Remem-

ber the Youth books count on all four Reading Plans. The 2010 Youth Book, “Cecilia's Year”, is a refreshing, charming story about a young girl with a head full of dreams. The children's books are beautifully illustrated. Children's books count on plans III

and IV only.

Plans I,II, III and IV require "Response Magazine" regular reading. To subscribe call 1-877-881-2385. The "New World Outlook Magazine" is required reading for Plans II, II and IV. To subscribe call 1-877-881-2385.

Response and New World Outlook subscription links can be found at www.missionresourcecenter.com. Also, book lists for 2006-2010 can be viewed at www.umwonline.org or at www.new.gbgm-umc.org/ umw/resources/reading-program/. It also has a downloadable reading program flier that you can use to write down all of the books that you read this year. You can also order books from this site.

Blessings and Happy Reading!! Peg Conrad

Hello!

Let me introduce myself to you. My name is Alice Peterson and I am the Northeast District Spiritual Growth chairperson. This is my first time to serve as a district officer though I have been a member of United Methodist Women for many years. I was sec-retary, vice president and president in my local unit at Springville United Methodist Church, which is

located in southern Indiana.

I moved to Fort Wayne almost five years ago when I married Gary Peterson. We are both active members of Saint Joseph UMC in Fort Wayne. I have a daugh-ter living in Fort Wayne with her husband and two children. I also have a son who lives with his wife

and two children in Springville.

I am going to be learning just what is expected of a Spiritual Growth chairperson as the year progresses. I would like to see more of the local units attend the meetings, workshops, retreats, and School of Chris-

tian Mission. I also hope many of you will be at tending Assembly in the spring. I also invite anyone who has questions or concerns about their position as Spiritual Growth leader to please feel free to contact me at any time. I will do my best to answer any ques-tions and try to help you do a wonderful job with your local unit. My email is: [email protected]

As we learn together how our spiritual growth helps us to be better prepared to help those around us through the many mission opportunities that are con-nected to United Methodist Women, I look forward to meeting and getting to know many of you through the year. God has given us a desire to work with other women to become all that United Methodist Women

can be.

God bless you all. Alice Peterson

Greetings, Leaders for Social Action!

As a former North Indiana Conference officer, I am excited to be a part of the new Indiana Conference by being your Northeast District Coordinator for Social Action. Although I have never served in this capacity before, I have a heart for social justice. This will be a

learning experience for all of us.

I live in Bluffton where I teach English at Bluffton High School. Dave and I have been married 34 years, and we have a son Adam and a daughter Lori, both of whom are married. Our biggest joy this

past year was the birth of our first grandchild, Marley Marie Johnson, on September 22. Being a grandma is just as wonderful as many of you told me it would be! Our daughter is expecting our second grandchild, also a girl, the end of February. I also teach an adult Sunday School class at my church, Liberty Center

UMC. One of my passions is Holocaust education because it connects so clearly with issues of justice.

While I realize it is sometimes difficult for local offi-cers to attend district events, I hope you will be able to get to one or two meetings. That will give us an opportunity to meet and share ideas.

To cut down on postage expense, I would like to communicate through email for those of you who have email accounts. Please email me with your email address so I can set up my address book. My email address is listed below. Be sure you notice the underscore after my initials. If you do not have email, I will send you communication through land mail.

Please contact me via email or phone if you have questions or concerns. Thank you for answering God’s call to serve in your local unit of United Meth-odist Women!

On the local level I have served as Treasurer and Vice President. I live at Goose Lake which is about five miles northwest of Columbia City. My sister and her husband live with me. I am divorced, have three children, eight grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. I will be retiring this year, so I hope to be able to assist more with United Methodist Women projects. I will be calling to ask you to serve

on the new Northeast District United Methodist Women. Please consider prayerfully and say YES. Sharon Kimmel 3283 W. Shoreline Drive Columbia City, IN 46725 260.244.4958 [email protected] 260.429.8103 (work) Sharon L [email protected]

Greetings!

I am currently serving on the Nominations Commit-tee for the Northeast District. I have been an ac-tive member of the United Methodist Women at Co-lumbia City UMC for about 15 years. I am secretary of the United Methodist Women Executive Commit-tee and a member of Tabitha Circle. My husband and I have a daughter who recently finished her master's

part of the Northeast District.

Laura Gater Nominating Committee

From the Nominating Committee Chairperson: It is now 2010 and the time that United Methodist Women of Indiana have been planning for has come. I hope that all of you are looking forward to being a part of the new Northeast District United Methodist Women. I have been a part of the District and Con-ference United Methodist Women for the past 22 years serving in various offices for both the District and the Conference as well as being on the School of Mission team. It has been a most rewarding experi-ence over the years and I have met so many wonder-ful, Christian women. I am a member of Forest Park United Methodist Women in Fort Wayne and have served in many capacities there as well. I am a wife to my husband Doug (my secretary) and a mother to my daughter Tammy and to my son Rob. Most im-portantly, I am grammy to Brian and Katy. I work as the practice manager for a neurologist during my spare time.

I hope that as this year progresses we can get to know all the women of the Northeast District and can spark the excitement of being a United Methodist Woman. The Nominating Committee will be look-

ing for officers for 2011 and it is my hope that lots of you will be interested in serving. Please contact me if I can be of any help to you or your units.

PAGE 7 NORTHEAST INDIANA DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN FEBRUARY 2010

The sale of Lucinda Pins continue to be a wonderful way to support Lucille Raines Residence. If your unit would like to have pins to sell at a special event or for any reason, call Marlene

Crowder at 447-9737.

Welcome everyone to the new Northeast District of Indiana United Methodist Women! What an exciting time to share in the Purpose of United Methodist

Women!

I am starting my third year as Communications Coor-dinator after serving two years in the Fort Wayne District. I am also the Communications person for

our local unit at Good Shepherd UMC in Fort Wayne.

As I’m sure you noticed, our newsletter now has a real name. After much research and brainstorming of several possibilities, we have decided on “The Purple Cloth.” Since purple is the color associated with United Methodist Women and Lydia was known for her purple cloth and service to Christ, “The Purple

Cloth” seems appropriate.

The Bible and a Commentary by Lynne Chapman (writer and author) has this to say about Lydia- A

Woman of the Bible:

13On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's mes-sage. 15When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us. ~Acts

16:13-15

This Woman of the Bible is mentioned in only two short passages, both in the book of Acts, but what is

said tells us a lot about her.

She is described as:

∗A dealer of purple cloth. Purple cloth was expensive and valuable as a sign of nobility or royalty so she

was probably a wealthy businesswoman.

∗A woman whose heart God opened. Paul shared the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ and through God’s divine work, she believed. She apparently was baptized right away along with the members of her household. Since her husband was not mentioned, I believe she was a widow. Lydia’s household proba-bly included children and servants. Whether the en-tire household believed or not, they now lived in a

Christian home.

∗A willing servant. She invited Paul and his compan-ions to stay at her house. When God opened her heart, she believed wholeheartedly. She became a servant, tending to the needs of the missionaries. Later in Paul’s mission, he returned to Lydia’s home where he met with believers. Lydia had apparently

become an active member of the church.

As soon as Lydia believed, she went to work for Christ. She shared her faith with her family and ser-vants. She opened her home to God’s people and con-tinued being of service to the church. I think that after a lifetime of faithful service, she met Jesus and was probably greeted with the words, “Well done good and faithful servant. Come and share My happi-

ness” (from Matthew 25:21)

Please continue to copy, distribute and spread the word through flyers and voice. Your help and coop-eration is essential to keeping all United Methodist

Women informed of upcoming events.

If you have an article and/or picture you would like to see in “The Purple Cloth”, please feel free to send it

to me.

Mission Studies Theme Proposals for 2013 and 2014

As you know, the Women’s Division carries the responsibility for producing study materials for use in an-nual Schools of Christian Mission and other mission education opportunities across the church. These mis-sion study resources are developed around three areas of focus: spiritual growth, geographic (country or re-gion) and general issue. Through participation in the mission studies, participants grow spiritually and in-crease their knowledge and understanding of the needs of the world and their responsibility in meeting those needs. We invite you to suggest possible study themes for the years 2013 and 2014 Please use the pdf form at: http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umw/media/pdf%20files/MissionStudiesThemeProposalWebForm.pdf (also included with this newsletter) to submit your suggestions for consideration. Feel free to copy the form and submit more than one proposal. All proposals must be submitted via the form.

Two themes will be selected for each year: a spiritual growth theme and either geographic or general is-sue. Themes identified to date are:

2010 : · For the Love of God: John’s Letters · Mission and Evangelism · Sudan 2012 · Living Sacramentally, Walking Justly · Poverty · Haiti Thank you for your assistance.

We are excited about our mission study resources and welcome your suggestions!

We are all excited about the new district and look forward to getting to know every-one. As we gather contact and unit information we will provide a list of Gold and Five Star Units in a future newsletter. We thank all of you for your service in mis-

sion to women and children and look forward to honoring you.

This offering may also be collected all year long.
