IVMSON Receives $805,595 Grant New Scholarship for FNP Students

IVMSON has received an $805,595 federal grant de-signed to help ease the national shortage of nursing educators. IVMSON is the only nursing program in north and central Alabama to receive the funds, and one of only two – the other is the University of South Alabama -- in the state.

The $805,595 grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, will provide loans for graduate and doctoral students pursuing an advanced degree with the intent to serve as faculty in a school of nursing. The Nurse Faculty Loan Program (NFLP) addresses a critical need in health care, according to Associate Dean Jane S. Martin. Students who receive the loans for mas-ter’s or doctoral degree programs can have up to 85 percent of the loan forgiven in exchange for service as full-time nursing faculty members at an accredited school of nursing. Individuals interested in pursuing an advanced degree in nurse education should visit nursing.samford.edu to apply or call 205-726-2047 for more information. Program Spotlight: Accelerated Second Degree

Page 4

The Accelerated Second-Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (ASDP) is one of the newest programs at IVMSON. Since its inception in fall 2009 the program has rapidly grown in popularity and reputation. The 15 month program is designed for persons who have earned a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing. The first cohort of accelerated students, who graduated in December 2010, achieved a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX-RN on their first attempt. These graduates are now employed in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and North Carolina. One graduate has already started the FNP program at the University of Mississippi and two others are planning to begin graduate school in January 2012. The second ASDP cohort consists of 16 students who will graduate in December 2011; the third cohort of 20 students began this fall and will complete the program next December. Currently 36 students are enrolled in the accelerated program. The program has attracted students from more than 20 states with a variety of work and life experiences. They hold previous degrees in music, biology, kinesiology, nutrition, psychology, international studies among others. Over 50% of these students are persons typically underrepresented in nursing, this includes men and minorities. Courses are the same as in the traditional program and clinical experiences are in area hospitals, clinics, public health and community agencies. If you or someone you know is interested in the program, click here to view the requirements for admission and the curriculum. For more information, please contact Dr. Janet Alexander, ASDP Director, at 205-726-2494 or [email protected]; or Mrs. Jan Paine, Director of Undergraduate Student Services, at 205-726-2746 or [email protected] .

Church Health Center and Wellness Center Welcomes ASDP Students

IVMSON E-NEWSLETTER September 2011

Written By: Molly Hamilton In August, the Accelerated Second Degree Nursing students, along with Samford nursing instructors Elaine Marshall and John Lundeen, had the opportunity to visit the Church Health Center in Memphis, TN and meet with Dr. Scott Morris, founder of CHC and author of Health Care You Can Live With. As part of the student’s Community Health course, Mrs. Marshall required students to read Dr. Morris’s book, which details the mission of the Church Health Center to reclaim the church’s biblical commitment to care for the bodies and spirits of all. Dr. Morris, an ordained United Methodist minister and family practice physician, founded the Church Health Center in 1987 to provide healthcare for the working uninsured. Currently, the Church Health Center clinic, relying primarily on church or faith based funding, cares for over 54,000 patients. Clinic services include acute care, primary and specialty care, dentistry, eye care, and counseling. In his book, Dr. Morris views wellness as more than the absence of a disease, but describes wellness as including the core elements of medical, family/friends, emotional, nutrition, faith, behavioral and social pieces. Therefore, as part of the Church Health Center, the Wellness program includes a chapel, a state-of-the-art exercise facility, nutrition and cooking classes, health education, art therapy, and child life services. “As the saying goes, ‘Seeing first hand is believing’,” said Marshall. “The true heart of health care is in the community—this is where we live, work, and play. We need the hospital services because they save lives every day, but the patient is still sent back out into a community. We need to send them better equipped and with resources in order to maintain the best health status possible.” During their trip, students had the opportunity to meet and visit with Dr. Morris, as well as view the entire Wellness facility. Also, students were treated to lunch by the Church Health Center cooking school, where nutritionists prepared and demonstrated to the class healthy alternative cooking methods. “After visiting the church health center, my definition of health care was forever changed. The church health center's holistic approach to patient care coupled with their ability to accommodate and anticipate the future needs of their community is unmatched,” said student Cody Walker. “Through a tour of the church health center, Dr. Morris and his staff's faith and ability to achieve the impossible becomes contagious, which inevitably spurs one to serve others in the same capacity.” According to Dr. Morris, the Church Health Center costs approximately $14 million to run yearly, but the value of the healthcare needs met are over $100 million. “Healthcare is local. It cannot be solved by the government. Money will not solve all our problems in order to fix the problem,” said Morris. “Patients are more than the symptoms in front of you. By dealing with a patient’s behavior, I can far more deal with health than by giving a pill.” According to Marshall, she has assigned Dr. Morris’s book Health Care You Can Live With to the Fall class as required reading, students have already remarked how much they are enjoying the reading. She also hopes to return to the Church Health Center next summer. To learn more about the clinic visit http://www.churchhealthcenter.org/.

In June, the Birmingham Baptist Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1965 gathered for lunch at Dale’s Southern Grill. The Samford nurse anesthesia faculty believe that the

process of developing committed nurse anesthetists begins as nurse anesthesia students. One of the ways that we develop professionalism is encouraging our students to attend state and national nurse anesthesia meetings. To that end, IVMSSON is pleased to announce that alumni and faculty of the Nurse Anesthesia Program have established the Samford Nurse Anesthesia Student Education Fund that will be devoted entirely to providing resources to support student attendance at professional meetings. Students who are involved professionally during their schooling will no doubt see the value of being engaged as CRNAs. If you are interested in making a gift to this fund, please contact Katie Stripling or click here to give online. We appreciate your support of this effort as we aim to solidify the Samford reputation of graduating nurse anesthesia students who value professional involvement.

Accelerated Second Degree Students Participate in Wilcox County Health Fair

IVMSON E-NEWSLETTER September 2011

By: Molly Hamilton As part of the Community Health Nursing class taught by Mrs. Elaine Marshall, Accelerated Second Degree Nursing students learned about community nursing and vulnerable populations by participating in a community health clinic for over 200 people in Gee’s Bend in Wilcox County on Saturday, August 6. The screening was organized by Dr. Sandra Ford and Henry Ford of the Spirit of Luke Foundation, UAB Stroke Center, Birmingham Baptist Association, and volunteers from 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham along with a variety of medical professionals, nurses, and physical therapists. “The clinical experience gives students a reality view of extreme poverty and the health disparities that exist in the population of Wilcox County,” said teacher Elaine Marshall. According to Marshall, in order to increase health status in the adults and children of this county, it takes many groups working in partnership toward that goal—manpower, equipment, resources, time, organization and funding. “Students experienced this by working side by side with the many partners and seeing the results in the community, even for one day.” In preparation for the health screening, students learned about the healthcare issues and risk factors that effected vulnerable populations. Also, as part of the course requirement, students created health education posters and brochures related to specific topics such as hypertension, stroke, and nutrition. Students displayed these projects at the health screening, teaching these patients significant health education, as well as preventative factors associated with each. "Our experience at Gee's Bend was a great opportunity for us to reach out to a community in need, as well as a chance for us to experience some of Alabama's culture,” said student Christy Farleigh. “This was one of those events that reminded me of the impact I can make as a nurse, and of the necessity for health education and screenings, specifically in those populations that are often overlooked." On the day of the Wilcox County Health Screening, students arrived early to help set up for the long day ahead. A triage area was established to provide basic health assessment to patients throughout the day. Samford students worked together with other volunteers to assist in taking blood pressures and gathering history and physical assessment data. The Samford Nursing Mobile Wellness Van provided two air-conditioned and medically equipped exam rooms, where eye exams were performed. In addition to participating in health assessments, providing health education and distributing informative brochures from their projects, students also participated by helping volunteers cook fried catfish and hotdogs that supplied the entire health screening with lunch.

One exciting and extra benefit to providing care to the population of Wilcox County was that students were able to view the famous Gee’s Bend Quilters. The acclaimed Gee’s Bend quilts are hand sewn and authentic collections that have been featured in the New York Times, CBS News, Martha Stewart Living, Oprah’s O Magazine and Newsweek. “I was inspired by the spirit of the people and really enjoyed seeing the Gee's Bend Quliters and their work,” said Farleigh. Overall, the health screening in Wilcox County provided students with a hands-on experience of community nursing and vulnerable

populations, bridging classroom content with real life experience.
